Big hug to you Debs from all of us out here in youtube land. Your faith, strength and courage is going to pull you through. May warm smiles and sunshine come your way.
Nice lathe John! Did some reading on them. Nice precision machine. I run a converter over here in the States. You can make foam box to cut the noise back a bit and/or add casters a long cord to move it to a less audible spot. All the best to both, Jojo

Nothing like getting a new lathe. Hope to see some videos soon. Reminds me of when I got my 10ee and moved it into my shop, the thrill is indescribable. The good part is the Harris is running, my Monarch would only run in reverse when we got it wired up, but it was an easy fix, a broken microswitch in the ELSR.
All of us over here and praying for you and Deb
    keep making those great videos.
    Chuck

I can see and hear the excitement in your voice regarding your new lathe, congratulations on finding what appears to be a really well looked after example together with all the extras and tooling to go with it. The guy with the delivery truck did a really good job for you getting it right in the garage like that. Your phase converter is real noisy though!
Sorry to hear about the upsetting delay in Debs treatment but lets hope it gets straightened out for the next treatment. Please send her my best wishes. Dan

Hi john I've had my harrison for a couple of years now and it is extremely accurate turning to surprising limits, done a test like the one you done but without the tailstock support on a 1" piece of brass hanging out 5" from chuck, took 3 passes I. E. Spring cuts and unbelievably no detectable difference from one end to other fabulous machine. Regards to you both you,ll get there debs , by the way love your videos j .

That is a very nice lathe you have, and it looks like it has hardly ever been used. It is in beautiful condition, it looks to be about the same size as my colchester. I love the finish from high speed turning :)) mine only goes to 1600. I was like you, I too just had to give it a try, just to see.
Our best to Debs and can't wait to see some projects on your new Harrison.
    Thank you,

Very nice lathe. Good one, John. Man, the chips really fly at 2k rpm! :-) Excellent delivery job, too. Tell Debs that I had a sudden and unexpected setback during my chemotherapy, too. I became allergic to one of the drugs and nearly went into anaphylactic shock after a treatment. In the end it delayed the whole treatment by a week, which in the long run didn't really matter. Karin and I will keep you and especially Debs in our thoughts and prayers. Thanks for the great update.

Man that is one nice lathe! That clutch is fantastic, nice smooth start on the chuck, jogging & I bet it will save some money on your power bill too. I like the old school roto-phase, simple & easy to maintain. Mine is sits on top of 4 VW 1.9 TD transmission mounts (you know those fluid filled ones... these haven't leaked...yet) it helps to control the noise a bit.
My best regards to debs, sending positive vibes from across the pond.
    cheers,

    Hi John,
The headstock taper is 4 & 1/2 Morse (it's apparently in old copies of Machinery's Handbook), except on rare occasions when it's a Jarno (presumably to special order).
It looks as if your clutch is out of adjustment a bit. At the far end of it's travel to the left (clutch in) there should be a reasonably strong braking effect. Often the 'brake' such as it is (a bronze shifter block bearing against a steel collar) is worn out, but that seems unlikely on your machine. The clutch centre is threaded to adjust the operating point. That's separate from the clutch spring tension. It's all in the manual.
When worn the clutches can rattle pretty bad and I abandoned mine (took the lever off) when I went to a VFD. The only thing I miss is the brake, which made changing chucks easy, now I just have to shift into the lowest gear.

    • @doubleboost
      @doubleboost  9 років тому

    John,
Nice new lathe!!! That Boxford is way underpowered(it made me cringe at how slow it spun up).
In High school we had two 15" Harrisons with 8' beds. They were the premium lathes in the machine tool class. We had two Leblondes and probably six South Bends. The shop was very well outfitted. My Sophomore year I took Machine Tool I. I ended up skipping most of my Junior year, so I didn't get the chance to take MT III. My Senior year I studied MT II, but my teacher allowed me to do MT III work so I got to use the Harrisons and other MT III machines in class.
My Dad bought an Atlas 10" in 1963, two years before I was born, so I grew up with it long before HS.
I wish Debs the very best and I'm thinking about you both...
    Jim

Sorry to hear about the hiccup in Deb's treatment, but I suppose all things happen for a reason, and the Dr.'s must know when you can take a little more poison, and when you can't. No doubt she's already past it an onto the next page. Thanks again for sharing the news with us, that is very big of you.

I'm sorry to hear that Debs couldn't get her chemo this week. I hope she is prepared for times like this. There might be several. Tell her to hang in there and to give her my best wishes. I like your new "toy". I've been looking at getting a Sieg SC6 lathe. I know it's Chinese, but it's about half the price of the one I'd like. It looks like your lathe will clean up nicely. Are you keeping the Boxford or selling it? Good luck with the lathe! I'd use your mover's services, but I'm afraid he won't come to California! :-) Have a good one!

  • @stangordon1595

    John,
when you get sorted, I`m guessing you were on the first line on the screwcutting plate with 50,80,80, changewheels.
or possibly the second line with 25 100 80,Now with either of the change wheel combinations- from the lever positions you will slow down the carriage feed by just turning the third lever over to the right. Using either changewheel setup.
If you are on 25,100,80, turn the middle lever to the right and bottom lever to the right so you have, left right right, leave the selector where it is,
Now if you want a mirror finish turn the screwcutting info plate over, and set the changewheels to 25,100,60,120.and again 3 levers left, right, right. selector where it is. make an enournous difference.

    • @stangordon1595
      @stangordon1595 9 років тому +1

Fortunately the adjustment is very simple, and you can manually offset the Tailstock centre to turn tapered stuff, getting it back to perfect parallel is the problem. But Harrison do have adjustment incorporated into the tailstock construction. So when John gets the time it will not be any sort of a problem,

How is the world did you accomplish that? Did you set it up in a press and press it straight. I would have thought that cast iron (if that is what it is made out) would snap when straightening it.

Nice looking new toy. My lathe doesn't take kindly to being moved - always upsets it.. It should be making some great videos....

Nice upgrade John. I will miss your boxford if you get rid of it though.

Great video. Nice size lathe there. Is it to replace the Boxford or be used with it? Thanks for the video.

Do you have the manual for the lathe? Sometimes oil is specified in the Alemite fittings of machine tools rather than grease. Nice lathe. It looks like it has really slow speeds, too, which is good if you need the gap bed. Best wishes to Debs.

First cut on your new toy, excellent blue chips, don't think you've had time to level it but did it have any taper? Finish getting her cleaned up and enjoy.
Debs is still in our thoughts.
