    These Black Friday sales are making it tough for my backlog...I just had to physically look at my unfinished games to tell myself, "You don't need give into the sales...stay away."

      Especially steam sales. Got nearly 100 games and about a third are unfinished or un played. A lot of times I'm replaying games that I know how to beat and learned the playstyle. Where as my unfinished games need more time to learn or delve into the story. Which isn't easy to commit to playing and learning when you have responsibilities IRL

      I mean it's still good to have a few on wishlist and buy them on sales to queue up ur backlog, but yeah when you have dozens of unplayed games while still looking at sales then you have shopping addiction 😂

      some years back i was thinking that, but these days i am not entirely sure. you can wake up one day and your job position is basically gone, that means it is definitely useful to somehow put your future into multiple baskets. now it doesnt mean all of it has to be work, but this AI era definitely put a lot of people in uncertainity.

    I've always suffered from this need to "perfect" the game, which results in me harming my experience with the game because instead of just playing it and enjoying what happens, I'm constantly worried that I'm not playing it "the right way".
    I love jrpgs, but I have this constant urge to get things "correct" the first time round. But this video is a refreshing take and something I needed to hear. Thank you.
    I'm going to just play a game for the sake of enjoyment and not worry about the outcome.

    A key thing I’ve had to help my wife learn is that hobby time is (or at least can be) productive. Spending time with your hobbies, your passions, the things that make you happy, is self-care and self care is productive! Like anything in life, you can take it to an extreme and make it unhealthy. However, if your other responsibilities finished and you have some free time, spend it doing something you care about. That will always be productive.

    Xbox quick resume has been a game changer for me. In the evening after all work n chores done, I have about 40 mins to spend unwinding and it’s so great to just start playing thru any of the last 7 or so games I launched. No intro, no loading, no credits, no cutscenes. Back exactly to where I left off. After 5 mins if I’m not feeling it, I quickly change to another game on quick resume in about 5 seconds. Usually last thing I play is to quick-resume into a tekken round that was on pause and just beat up the AI for 3 rounds or so. Game changer for busy people and/or analysis paralysis.

    • @jonathangersamYT
      @jonathangersamYT 20 днів тому +4

      BTW quick resume should be on all platforms. PS PC Switch all of them. I have a ps5 that’s collecting dust even though it’s my most powerful console at home it’s just so clunky to start up I get anxious and impatient and it ruins the flow of the session for me.

    • @JamieR
      @JamieR 19 днів тому +1

      This is why Nintendo Switch has been so great too. You literally pick up and continue where you left off. And it becomes more focused since it's just the last title. And not having to feel like everything has to be optimized (guides, spreadsheets etc) all the time. That truly killed my enjoyment in gaming for a long time. Couldn't switch the brain out of that producitivity mindset, and instead always felt like I was wasting my time as I wasn't being productive. Instead of enjoying the thing just to selfishly enjoy it... for myself. Which is nothing wrong with as this experience is OURS. We get to choose how to spend the time. And I'm not saying we should hedonistically only pursuit pleasures, but that they are an integral part for a balanced and healthy life.

    Seems like I needed to hear this, I'm at a point where I can no longer enjoy or have fun on any video games I play because I feel like I don't know why I'm playing video games anymore, it's like I lost the very reason on why I play them, maybe you are right I'm planning to much or I always set a certain goal or have to do something perfect or smooth or I'm being way too competitive instead of just having fun..

  • @RoyalLudwig
    @RoyalLudwig 21 день тому +17

    This is something Im so guilty of. I always try to optimize every single thing. I even believe that its the core reason for why I still suffer from depression, because I attach a lot of my self worth to my performance. Ill try my best to get away from that way of thinking but its just a reflex for me to do it right and overanalyze.🙈 Thank you so much for making this video, its exactly what I need. I have trouble trusting my way of doing things, its very easy for me to fall for the trap of constantly doing it the way someone else wants me to. Sometimes I even expect others to want me to do something in a particular way, even tho they dont have expectations. Im just so used to doing it like this, but the more often i catch my subconscious thoughts on trying to go this route, the less power theyll have over me and the more free I become! The funny thing is, I actually want to start a youtube channel on exactly these topics, how to enjoy gaming again.

    It's crazy you talk about this subject when just a few days ago I had a small crisis due to trying to optimize every single second of free time I have. This past year has been pretty busy, I'm relatively new to the work market, so I'm not used to having so little free time and on top of that in February I started working out and eating better to improve my health and it's been great, but that kind of thing doesn't leave much free time if you add the time I spend working. So I have been obsessing about getting the most out of my free time and planning every single second of my day, until last week when my brain pretty much had to reset. It all hit me at once and I realized I have to work on just letting things out of my control every now and then, nothing good comes out of trying to Min-Max life.

    In the book "4000 weeks," by Oliver Burkeman, he quotes the writer Gary Eberle who refers to the term "deep time," - a time when we "slip into a realm where there is enough of everything, where we are not trying to fill a void in ourselves or the world.” The boundary separating the self from the rest of reality grows blurry, and time stands still. “The clock does not stop, of course, but we do not hear it ticking.”
    In our world, it is near impossible to forget the ticking clock. Every second, we feel like we are wasting our precious time. But in 1925, Carl Jung spoke of gigantic herds of animals in Kenya, grazing heads nodding, the herds moving forward like slow rivers, scarcely any sound save the melancholy cry of a bird of prey. "This was the stillness of the eternal beginning," he said. "The world as it always had been, in the state of non-being."
    This is a world without the shackles of a clock.

    I've been trying to be more mindful and actually finish games and it's been hard, not just because of fomo but in general I'm easily distracted now. I've had to sort of lock-in with games, I'll pick one game and almost force myself to play it, the end result though is that I just finished my first playthrough of Dark Souls Remastered and I'm quite content with that, so I'll try to stay with that approach for now.

    On one side i know i should just quit it and be done with it. On the other side after the 3 months i took a break i missed out on a lot of stuff and i missed the game. So it feels like its either way shit :D

    This is why I hate gaming with my friends. They play games too systematically. Modern games are all about PvP and competition and I hate it. It's the most profitable type of product. It wasn't always like that. Counter Strike was much more fun, with more fun maps, custom sprays, lots of goofing around. But other games too. Now it's all about pushing that AAA RTX with shitty gameplay or making games ridiculously complex where it's no longer skill but rather memorizing to play games like a Wikipedia.
