I just realised that Imogen is probably the baby in the room: Chetney: 200+ Deanna: 200+ FCG: ancient automaton Fearne: time is a weird soup Frida: ancient automaton Imogen: around 24?
Are we ignoring the beauty of: Fearne: "He made me all of these little carved figurines." Imogen: "He made me a horse...still haven't worked out how to make it move." F.C.G.: "Wheel."

Chetney fruitlessly waiting for Frida to compliment him after Frida compliments Imogen and Fearne, and then trying to fish for it by complimenting Frida, but to no avail... This had me in stitches. 🤣

I only now realised this, but every character Travis plays contemplates masculinity on a very real and understandable way. Grog and Fjord went through overcoming weaknesses that men generally deal with, and Chutney manifests the fear of growing old and weak, unable to help those you care for.
@@rizzlethegreat9682 my dude you're watching the youtube VOD of an episode that aired four days ago. it's logical to assume that a lot of people commenting watched the episode when it aired and are talking about it in the comments. if you don't wanna see spoilers, don't look in the comments of a video.
I can't have been the only one to catch this, but I'm going to share it: 57:00 Aabria gets Travis' attention (think he's looking at her character's art) to show him her characters name. His face when he realizes who she is, and her glee at that realization... The two of them are so animated and get so into the game! putting the two of them next to each other is always a good decision.
I don’t wanna be rude but I think the whole idea is what annoyed me the most bout the episode… like his mates tell you he’s gonna be fine, it’s just a “phase” when he’s just feral and its gonna end soon… and guess what, you go out and chase him!? Like wtf u stupid or what? Ahaha
@@bif1290I can accept he just knows both that werewolves are a thing and just know that Chetney is one because hey, Matt let him so fuck it. I’m catching up so maybe theres a giant lore dump waiting to happen. But to also know all that and then try to play hero for something that needed no hero just came off as him trying to play central character when he already has major story shit already written in. Best case scenario with his plan is that instead of Chetney coming back on his own as is established by everyone else is what happens, he triumphantly does that thing himself (or just ends up dead alone in a forest). This is the first time I’ve been actually annoyed by a guest character and I watched Ashley Burch in campaign 2.
@@thatonedude675Yeah felt wierd and unnecessary to me and was a pain to see all the rules going out the window, no close quarters ranged disadvantage even dancing lights and fly at the same time from laura was cringing hard
@@thatonedude675 on the other hand tho (rules forgetting aside), they are in a place known to be occupied by monsters, right? leaving him alone to come back himself is equally as dangerous because if he runs into something he's probably fucking dead. Also, Christian says he goes out solely because Chet means a lot to Deanna, it's well within the characters personality to go out. Might not be the most optimal thing, sure, but it's reasonable enough of a decision
As much as Orym refers Imogen as BH's leader, the group really look up to him. Chetney praised Orym as a capable Air Ashari warrior and even asked Deanna to cast Sending to him
I wouldn't know how much impact it had so far. But not having Orym at the top of just about any initiative sliding through legs and bait and switch boost Imogen or Lauda's AC by a million, not having this silly 31 passive perception, etc. That to me makes the two girls seem so much more fragile and exposed to the world. I gotta say, the way he does that one thing over and over again to give those down the initiative room to act is just so much in line with Liam trying to not be the main character this time around. Instead he made a character all about leveraging the others
I love how much of a shield Orym is, both literally and figuratively. He will face any danger and shield those in his care, no matter the consequence. As much as he wants to join his husband, he also is strong enough to continue in this life and do what he can to keep more people safe.
Imogen is plot-wise sorta the "main character" at least for now - but I wouldn't call her the leader. Laudna or Orym I'd say are the most trustworthy decision-makers. If I had to pick anyone in the party to heap responsibility on and just go with what they say in a moment where there's no time to think, I'd want Laudna personally. Her extraordinarily resilient and positive outlook at it relates to extreme trauma and the like, she's truly exceptional at tackling impossible circumstances/is the most able to instinctively land on and commit to the good thing under pressure out of everyone in the party. Chetney is the best "leader" in his lucid moments, but that only happens in intense crunch time/not consistent. Imogen is wayyyyy too... wispy wishy washy? I guess? To keep everyone's best interests in-mind, uplift everyone, filter through everyone's ideas and create consensus, etc. Hard to pin down, but when she's talking to someone in an intense moment and her voice gets ramped up to 11 with mega-emotion, huge tone shift, starts kinda whispering, talking slow and without any substance, focusing 110% on the emotional stakes and utterly ignoring the rational stakes - that is her mode when things matter most, essentially anti-leadership. Where Launda's built to instinctively create and/or reveal wellbeing, Imogen is built to instinctively obfuscate and diminish it. Paying attention to which things they each feed energy into, trails of conversations they start, add to, try to end, Laudna almost always directs into positive outcome-oriented thinking, Imogen almost always directs towards negative, dwell on problems, move away from solutions oriented-thinking. Stuff like that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Imogen is definitely not the leader.
@@BlueRadium I'd go as far as say Imogen is some odd pin ball bouncing around and all the others do is try and catch her in a game they don't understand. I don't mean this in a negative way. I find her super interesting as a character in such a large group. Sometimes I feel like Laura is not even playing the same game. Laura is playing the setting. The rest is playing manage Imogen.
@truefunghi9351 I agree - Imogen adds lot to the overall fun, but more-so as a conflict causer/enabler, which is the exact person you do not want to have be leading. Everyone else playing off of her producing the conflict and then not resolving it is what makes her the "main character" for the time being. Kinda hope she comes into her own and levels out. The post-episode 51 cataclysm episodes have been the best of campaign 3 so far by a huge margin. Key thing being, the Imogen's conflict driving everything situation had completely turned off. It's really shown that all of the characters are great, and Imogen does a great job as a part of the team, but is made to feel far worse as a character when forced to be the main character of the team. Should also say, I "blame" Matt for sorta forcing Laura to be the "main character" - with how the plot was going she had no choice. I feel a massive upheaval in that status quo has happened though. At least from my limited personal point of view, it has made each episode wildly more fun to watch. Should also also say, I feel the setup from the first 51 episodes is gonna pay dividends on how fun the show is. Turning off Sending and revival magic drastically shifting player behavior towards way more meaningful RP is the most immediate example. And now that the big bad has won-ish and we get the JRPG answer the call but the context is alien and unfathomable moment, feel we're in for an especially amazing time and C3 is going to turn out beautiful. Matt just cooked wayyyy too long with the first 51 episodes to set up the worldbuilding that'll make C3 special. Episode 51 should have happened around episode 10-15 - the characters would have been equally totally out of their depth and unable to deal with the level 25 mega-Wizard who can TPK them by blinking. A level 25 (guesswork - but level 25 seems to be appropriate for the character/they enter the wishy-washy epic level shennanigans tier of power) Wizard can wipe a party of 7 from levels 1 to maybe 16 in 1 round, as long as Matt pulls out the bag of tricks and plays the power-obsessed, probably most powerful living Wizard in the setting cards semi-"optimally." Having 1.5 million gold in silly magic items that do silly things on top of epic-level feats and etc. Honestly limitless access to the grandest magic items in the game is lore-appropriate, being a Wizard who heads the Exandria's version of a Lawful Evil actual Illuminati. Unlimited gold becomes a character feature - load up all extra "unnamed" gear slots with Ioun Stones, stat-boosting tattoos, time stop scrolls, vestment+robe+staff of the archmagi, maybe 2-3 one of a kind relics he U.K.-style pillaged a nation for so he has an Arms of the Betrayer in his back pocket. Permanent True Sight, by torturing a Genie until they granted it to him at the cost of the Genie's own life or something. It'd actually be silly to think he didn't have all of the above - he is the most powerful person at the head of the most powerful Wizard shennanigans-oriented organization that exists. Who is extremely unethical, egomanical, manipulative, and power-obsessed. He should literally be a Christmas tree of pure madness if you cast Detect Magic and glance at him. This is all to say, them being level 3 or level 9 never mattered. Him not deleting them round 1 after having some ridiculous magic item that gives +20 on initiative is purely RP-based. In terms of episode 51, him being the conduit for an over-the-top ritual spell with a 40 DC, the party thankfully blew up a few batteries that lowered his Intelligence check bonus from a contextual bonus of 30 down to 20. Or something. And he had trouble rolling 11 or higher on the literally teather moon to planet check with 28 Intelligence giving a +9, hence the inability to fight back + becoming destroyed by the ritual, having his arms blackened and destroyed. The party only had to make a 40 DC or something Intelligence check fail, not fight him. But he had multiple attempts, probably draining character levels each fail, adding drama/stakes/fun. That could have happened in episode 15. He makes for an amazing and strategic fight for a level 20 party though - considering they have no Wizards/don't have any classes that become demi-gods at level 20, besides maybe Fearne. But I think she multi-classed out of pure caster, so is 2-3 times less powerful at level 20 from the few levels other-than Druid. 7 non-"optimal" (full casters, prepared (Wizard/Druid)) level 20s (which I consider a good thing, a level 20 Wizard or Druid forces the DM to drastically mess with encounters in a way that can relegate other players, not as fun for all the players) vs. an optimized level 25 Wizard with an unlimited amount of gold-based resources, and Tharizdun/cheeky Elder God/whoever ends up actually being the red moon friend benefactor boost, is a very fair fight that probably favors the big bad a bit. 1 metagamed epic-level Wizard who is lore-appropriate "meta-gaming" from having a Calamity up to modern day amount of living time trial and error-ing being OP by itself is enough to wipe 7 level 20s on a bad day. For Matt it's not being an asshole, just a guy who has had an absurd amount of time to almost die 100s of times from living such a turbulent life and fine-tuning. "Okay so a Robe of the Archmagi would defend me enough to keep that lich's pet Pit Fiend from hitting me that one time. Just gotta skim a bit off the top of the Cerberus Assembly's 25 million gold budget, grab one of them. If any do-gooder finds me out, I can just say I was on the front lines of key conflicts, and 5% of our budget going to our most powerful combatant and Lieutenant General of Wizards not dying was a strategic choice. It is an investment in our future as well, and effectively acts as a military deterrent, the guy who will drop meteor swarms being far less killable from that sweet Robe of the Archmagi DC. And I have hundreds of years to think and act this way. I think I'll have a Staff of the Archmagi commissioned next year. If the king complains, us not getting conquerored because of me and him complaining about my decisions the year after I won the war will make him look foolish. This is a real-life infinite money glitch. Yay infinite ultra-powered gear." Then the party gets to deal with THAT - an entire culture feeding pseudo-infinite power for years and years into a big-bad. Truly epic and exciting combat. At least if up to episodes 52-56 is any indication things are getting great, which is how far in I am currently.

There’s two Laura Bailey characters that are freaking out that Sending is out of service. Matthew took Jester’s most powerful weapon away. Let chaos reign?
I hadn't considered that! Man, I can only imagine how much Jester must be freaking out right now. Deprived of her ability to pester the ever loving shit out of some of the most powerful people alive? I imagine it's a mix of "Arty, did I do something wrong, why did you take my power away?" in a really hurt voice, and begging him to give it back.
I didn't consider that Sending was out around the whole world. It seemed to me more like it affected the party specifically, since they were at the site. Though, of course, Deanna couldn't message Orym, could she? So maybe it's a proximity thing, the party might be causing a ripple? I'm definitely pulling at strings here, but imo it doesn't look like enough evidence to assume Sending is out across the planet
@@reaprcussion5703 I think it's the leylines. Like there's too much magic in the air for long distance spells to travel. It's just getting lost in all the background noise.
@@Pro_Butcher_Amateur_Human It seems like all the ley lines have been pulled towards the Malleus Key, which is causing spells like Sending are getting lost in it. Same with whatever Imogen's dream-scrying is, since she tried to find Laudna and instead saw the Key.

I think the Aeormaton's are coming back because of what the Mighty Nein did in Aeor when they repaired Devexian. It said he was going to go wake the others or something like that. Maybe Devexian is this D character that sold FCG to Dancer.

@Shawn Holbrook Thank you. I commented before I had completely finished the episode. I really felt stupid after I saw it but forgot to edit my comment🤦🏼♀️.
Commenting way too early but omg giant shoebill is the perfect choice for Fearne to turn into for her first fly! Those things are terrifying, they are already huge in real life and will basically eat anything. I once saw a photoset where a shoebill was stalking along and a small duck started crossing its path. The shoebill picked the duck up in its massive beak, and for a moment the photographer thought omg is it actually going to swallow it? But instead it just tossed the duck aside. It really didn't need to move the duck at all but I guess just wanted to throw its weight around. So yeah they are weird as hell and scary, what could be more perfect for Fearne!
Also the noise they make Like imagine just walking through the swamps and you see a 5 foot tall bird just staring at you with a hook on its face, just for it to start making gun noises at you
The cool thing is they are harmless to people. Are quite friendly, and in zoos make strong lasting connections to their caretakers. Only about 5000 left tho last i heard
Aabria making Travis constantly improvise and revise nearly all of his backstory knowing damn well that he's the worst of the bunch at fleshing out characters is what I'm here for
People complain about Aabria, but I really like her with Travis is around for this reason. That scene around 1:31:00, when they are talking about Deana`s death, is phenomenal. The timing, the inflections are all perfection. There was this gnomish rogue Jan Jansen that was one of the NPCs you could invite into your party and his battle cry when you ordered him to go into melee was something like "Ha ha, your kneecaps are mine now!" (Don't know the exact wording since I played the German language version, it was "Ha ha, deine Knieescheiben gehören mir!" there.)
I was thinking it was for the same "switch" as FCG, and will try to kill everyone 🤔 but that was not a save now that i think of it, Matt said he gained stress levels or something like that
I absolutely loved Christian and Aabria in this episode, and I can't wait to see what happens next! Splitting the party was such a fun idea to make the "bring back ALL of the guests" idea happen!!

And annoying and trying to shoot herself into the main story
@@alannanetz3662 YIKES prayge for this one critters. Prayge.

it's so funny how bells hells just forgot that werewolves aren't a common occurence
Well, to be fair, they've met several of them.
2:54:00 Calling the Dawn Father "Sunny D" is the exact deep lore cut/sarcasm that I need in my life. Thank you, Aabria!
Travis' little, "Bro?" when Matt mentions the full moon. 🤣
Orym has both a Sending Stone to Dorian and one to Caleb, so it will be interesting to see if those still work or if they have the same effect as the normal spell
I just realized that all of the sweet, lost loves reuniting stuff that happened was done while Chetney way wearing a blood covered, seeping apron and no one batted an eye.
I believe he gave the Butcher's Bib to Nana Morri as a gift
@@tahaabbas6616 Chet just showed off the macabre item to Morri. I would imagine until something better comes along Chet is wearing it so if Travis rolls a 19 or 20 crit with either the scythe or chisel (re skinned dagger) or any slicing weapon maybe even his claws.
I think he forgot he had it equipped (so canonically, doesn't have it on?); I seem to remember him rolling a 19 to hit after saying he would wear it, but forgetting that was a crit, and I don't think he's ever used the reroll ability.
Never forget the M9 approached a royal court averting civil war in full BDSM prisoner gear. This crew has the spacial memory of a parrot.
the fact that travis and laura were the first to hug aabria and christian makes me unbelievably happy
i also loved this interaction at 2:04:17:
laura: "what did you cast on him?"
aabria and travis: "death ward"
laura: *crying noise*
Good lord the calm positivity and protection oozing from FRIDA is insane. I will 100% make a character like this.
I'm also in love with the idea of a character like this
D opens a mechanic shop, selling screws and bolts and such.
D's Nuts.
Thanks I hate it

3:10:53 Gods, Ashley is such an amazing actress. Fearne's panic sent chills up my back, dude.
Not to mention thay amazing shoebill rp. I genuinely laughed out loud when she said "those are my feet" 😂
best moment in the episode for me! We rarely see Fearne lose composure like that I thought I had hallucinated it!
I kept thinking of what Travis said about Ashley’s unhinged screams being on another level. We saw it in LVM and TLOU too! I was SHOOK
Seriously! It was amazing. Fearne has never shown THAT level of concern/panic before and you could tell she (Fearne) was frightened.
The way she said imogen my gosh so good
@ellie Kitabjian Do you remember where Travis said this? I'd love to watch the video if there is one. Thanks in advance!

Ashley Johnson committing for 3 uninterrupted dramatic minutes making bird style hand gestures is one of my favourite fucking things Ive ever seen
I'm so excited to see Travis and Aabria sitting next to each other again, their reactions were absolutely iconic in ExU: Calamity
Aabria is the one woman besides Marisha who can match Travis' levels of hype. Travis, Marisha, and Aabria are all equal parts cast and audience member. Together, the three of them would be unstoppable.
They make a great team. Actors playing well off each other's energy. Gotta love it
I am glad that Matt got to DM for Aabria like he had been wanted to do for sometime.
I’m so ready for the new season of dimension 20 because Matt’s DMing. Just hope Brennan is a player this time

I don't know how to describe it but they're just... pleasant. Like you wanna chill with them.
Yeah I just got to this episode and I'm obsessed with his warmth and charisma. Brings so much to the table.
It's kinda funny that every time Imogen looks straight at Ruidus Laura rolls really poorly for perception.

This was a personal attack on one Travis Willingham and I am not complaining
He's too funny when his character is in distress xD
The friendship dynamic between him and Aabria is hilarious to watch.
@@twothirdsanexplosive Sooo true. Their bromance is almost as good as the one between Travis and Marisha. I can only imagine the hype they'd express if they were all on the same side of the table!

@Shawn Holbrook Thank you. I commented before I had completely finished the episode. I really felt stupid after I saw it but forgot to edit my comment🤦🏼♀️.
I love Travis and his commitment to a character trying to kill a friendly. He’s so much fun
Why do I feel like crying every time Christian speaks? His voice is so soft and soothing and perfect.
Also the noise they make
Like imagine just walking through the swamps and you see a 5 foot tall bird just staring at you with a hook on its face, just for it to start making gun noises at you
I was so confused why they were calling it cute when it’s terrifying! Fearne being one and calling one cute fits so well though. 😂
Someone should send them a video of it's call. The way it sounds is the best argument for birds being dinosaurs.
The cool thing is they are harmless to people. Are quite friendly, and in zoos make strong lasting connections to their caretakers. Only about 5000 left tho last i heard
They're scary as fuck and absolutely ADORABLE.

OMG YOU WATCH CRITICAL ROLE - PLEASE DO A RAP BATTLE ON THIS!!
Such a great episode! The knitting detail popping up was so great. Travis was NOT ready. hahahaha
Aabria making Travis constantly improvise and revise nearly all of his backstory knowing damn well that he's the worst of the bunch at fleshing out characters is what I'm here for
People complain about Aabria, but I really like her with Travis is around for this reason. His characters are often less challenged than the others and his "I'm an unstoppable tank and a troll" act it gets a little old. Talesin and Liam try, but, really, other than Sam as Nott, no one succeeds at doing so as much as Aabria.
Ferne screaming "IMOGEN, WAKE UP." felt like a punch to the face.
Oh I LOVE the hug party when the two guests come in. Critical Role truly feels like an evergrowing family, amazing to have Aabria and Christian in the main campaign!
MINOR SPOILERS-I already knew Aabria was amazing, but I was really impressed by Christian this episode. FRIDA is such a cool character, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to them next episode... And oh my goodness, that reveal about Chetney's beanie! My heart!
Christian had a guest-starring spot already for a one-shot, I believe. He was pretty solid in it too, so I'm not surprised he did well this time around. Love the blunderbuss-arm-cannon. Reminds me of Lex Luthor's android bodyguard Mercy.
Thanks for adding the warning!❤

Can it just be acknowledged that F.R.I.D.A's words, after witnessing last episode the kind of person who would have been responsible for their "innate programming", are so terrifying. Chills. You could see Travis reacting to them while the rest of the group just moved on.
YESSSSSSSS. What a curve ball, to have BH almost maybe stop a guy trying to kill the gods, just to get blasted to Wildmounte & hook up with an actual person from the ancient ruined City that's famous for TRYING TO KILL THE GODS. That whole bit about giving the gods a nap is just a fluffy take on some real bad shit.. I love it
@@ASB-is-AOK honestly that was a detail I missed and now it recontextualizes the whole episode in a way that feels better. I was getting a little tired of F.R.I.D.A. talking about over and over again how much they dislike the gods, but now it all makes sense
@EGOHVCbcn same, there has always been some anti-religious in CR even as far back as keyleth so I thought this was the same thing but I realized this guy follows his programming even now so he must be programmed to hate the gods

Man, when Fearne of all people is the one going "No! That's a terrible idea! Don't even think about it!" you KNOW it's a bad idea! And you know it really is the end times when Fearne is the one being the level headed voice of reason
I love that frida acknowledged that they infringed on chetney by going out there alone and that they didn’t blame chetney for what he did
I don't understand why everyone wasn't mad at Frida for being stupid surely he should have left a werewolf alone at that time, the rest of Bells Hells basically told him that, he was being an idiot or possibly he had another motive for tracking down Chet.
@@MichaelChisholmChizzieRascal yeah he definitely did have an alternative motive, he did it because he knew chett meant something to his friend( I dont remember her name lol). He also definitely has very little care for himself and he knew that it might end badly but would rather try and do what he thought would be helpful anyway
I was hoping this is what they were going to do. Throwback to the Slayer's Take episodes way back from early C1 where they split up to go on missions with guests coming in to play other members of the Take. It was amazing to see Matt become a true believer of the Wheaton Dice Curse live one camera.

Also, can i just mention MAD PROPS for all this time of keeping such badass moments in his back pocket? I for sure thought he was gonna end the campaign when the "thingy" went up yet it had more twists. i am so excited to see when this stuff keeps goin
Christian and Robbie sound so similar that when I first heard Christian speak I thought for sure that Robbie had loaned CR a brother!
I KNOW RIGHT, they sound so familiar but Christian voice sounds so softer
That scene around 1:31:00, when they are talking about Deana`s death, is phenomenal. The timing, the inflections are all perfection. FCG grasping at the concept "...You were in the ground...or something..."; Imogen`s assertion "You were with the Gods"; FRIDA`s soft interjection "She was happy". Then everyone's, especially Fearne and Chetney, stunned realization. Not to mention Deana`s subsequent description of passing on. I don't know if it can be done any better than that. Bravo!!
I can't help thinking that the "I got better" at 1:29:12 was a Monty Python reference.

It’s cool, but it’s pulled me about of the story!
Keep in mind that 3 group members are missing!
They don’t know if they are death.
No urgency to find out.
@@Ghostleeee what do you mean "no urgency"? They sent multiple messages which is fogged over. Their team is beyond exhausted. They fought a giant lizard after all that has happened. Of course when friendlies come in there would be a moment of rest. Them doing some self care is important if they died trying to potentially get to the rest of Bells hells that would help no one. At least they have a plan. They know things are going very wrong, but there is nothing that they could do as it stands. It's frustrating, but to say there is zero urgency isn't right either
@@houndgirl7365 also, they did try. They tried to reach out multiple time with Sending, it didn't work. Imogen reached out with a dream, it didn't work. What else are they supposed to do? First, they need to make sure they don't die, so they go to Uthodurn.
I agree but....there are only so many seats at the table. The hard question is which of the other player characters we kill off to make room? 😬
@Ghost Shadow Additionally, this group is in another continent. They have no means of teleportation. Ashton was the one who had the portable hole. The party is almost 2 days? away from Uthodurn. And let's not forget that it's Full Catha moon. This was design to keep this party stranded for a time.

Anyone else spend the entire intro not convinced it wasn’t just a really elaborate ad?
2:37:30: "Why the kneecap?" Chetney: "It was right at eye level..." Oh man, that vividly reminded me of the old Baldur's Gate II game.
