As a woman, there's this clarity that happens around your mid-twenties, thirties. Where you become super aware of all the adult men that targeted you when you were most vulnerable. You look back at parties and friend groups and even family members...and the lines they used on you. Lines that would never work on an adult woman but they knew would work on a girl desperately trying to feel like an adult or desperately trying to feel loved and seen. I was watching a Doc on Netflix recently and it said that predators go after young people that have past trauma, for lots of reasons right, we have a less than solid support system, we see ourselves as more "adult" because of what we've been through, and this is important...people are less likely to believe us and we are less like to view ourselves as victims until much later in life. You hear adult men defend their attraction and relationships with literal children, young women who's brains aren't finish growing...by saying, oh she's "mature" for her age, "she's wise", "she's not like other teenagers, she's quiet and she's lived". But its bull. A girl that's been hurt or had to take on adult responsibilities is still a GIRL. You're targeting her because she has the body of a woman and the mind, experience, and self autonomy of a child. You're hooking up with her because she's easily impressed, doesn't see through your bullsh*t, and is desperate to be loved. These guys get in a habit of dating and seeking out 16, 17, 18 year olds cuz its easy and the girls are so adoring. And the messed up thing is it'll be years before they understand what happened to them and they were scammed, their bodies used and not respected, used as props in fantasies and not as vulnerable children. That, "quiet, mature, deep, crazy-smart-for-her-age, GIRL", leave her alone!! Let her heal and figure herself out. Let her date people her own age. Let her be a teenager. Any you, either step up your game so you can approach women your own age or be alone. But being that guy always hitting on the youngest woman in the room, dating high schoolers and college girls well into adulthood...we see you, we get it now, and we will call you out for being sad, gross, and a predator.

I don't get why people think bringing up Tana being a party girl or how she dresses or behaved is a valid argument against her. Tana is a textbook example of the type of girls who get preyed on. She's from a tumultuous family background with no parental supervision. She's hanging around in adult spaces. She's old enough to feel grown but young enough to be very naive. She had just moved away from her home state and parents. She had just started blowing up and was probably not doing so great dealing from the sudden amount of scrutiny she was receiving over everything she did and said. And she's been Cody's fan since before she was 15

I said the same thing in another video! I don’t think these people realise that “but this underage girl was drinking and on drugs!” Is not the consent slam-dunk they think it is.
I work in education and if we saw a teenager drinking heavily, partying, using drugs, difficult home life, we would immediately be flagging them as “at risk”.
“yeah she was underage BUT she was drinking, partying and dressing provocatively!” Yeah bud that sounds like the exact kind of person who I’d expect to get preyed on, that’s like the perfect combination of circumstances for someone to be preyed on by an older person.

      2. The reason a lot of public figures end up getting involved with minors is imo cause most of their fanbases are children - like the kind of fans who really adore them and prop up the image the content creator is trying to cultivate - they find extreme validation from these fans, and the kind of people who want to be online famous are the kind of people desperate to feel validated/loved/popular.

I’ve seen too many people arguing that Tana was close enough to 18 that it doesn’t make a difference, but dude, we aren’t playing darts. The age of consent is not a target for you to hit. You don’t win because her age was “close enough”. She was not an adult and it was not appropriate for him to take advantage of his influence to sleep with her.
As someone who is the same age as Cody was when it happened, it’s horrific thinking about sleeping with a 17 year old. They act like children because they are children. They do not have anywhere close to the same life experience as a 25 year old so there is inevitably naivety there that shouldn’t be taken advantage of.
He was the adult, he should have done better. It’s not hard to not sleep with a 17 year old.

I said it in the comments of D'Angelo's video, and I'll paraphrase it here.
I am a 25 y/o man. 17-year-olds are not my peers. They're gangly kids who need their parents' permission to hang out with friends on a school night. They're the high schoolers I tutor. They're my youngest cousin, who's just starting to fully grasp that there's a whole world of people outside the friends he grew up with. They can't vote, they can't drink, and many of them can't drive. They have So. Much. Growing left to do.
The difference between me and them, in terms of brain development and life experience, is absolutely staggering. That difference stacks so much power in my favor that it sickens me. To pursue someone sexually with that level of power over them is predatory, full stop. And if you're also a minor celebrity they already look up to? Fucking forget about it.
I hate when people use these situations to nitpick over age of consent shenanigans (i.e. "she was basically 18!"), when the literal number of years someone's been alive is not the actual problem. The problem is the difference in power, and it's why I as a 25-year-old man absolutely cannot see myself being attracted to someone more than 3-ish years younger than me. Even undergrad college students feel like starry-eyed kids to me now. I don't think there's any justifying Cody's behavior.

    • @stfuyoupenis
      @stfuyoupenis 2 місяці тому +19

Reading your reply, I felt an odd sense of relief. As someone who is currently 18 going on 19, I feel like people expect people in the 17-19 age range to automatically know everything. And that they need to hurry and become an adult or they will be shamed by society. We don’t know, I barely applied for my first job, and I was so terrified to drive that I’ve only started trying to learn last year.
People my age are still prone to being targets because they don’t know or weren’t taught. And everyone is raised differently while experiencing different experiences. But the fact is that we are barely entering the adult world, and we seek guidance. And that causes some to take advantage of that. Especially those with a large influence or power.
So thank you for your sense of understanding, that we are indeed still children that are trying to learn, and being a person who provides the help and guidance to those who need it.

In this episode, Bojack almost sleeps with a 17 year old girl but gets caught. The show makes it very clear that even though nothing happened, and even if something did happen, it wouldn’t have been illegal (the incident happened in New Mexico where the age of consent is 17, both parties were fully consenting and sober), but it’s still a horrible, disgusting thing. Bojack feels immense guilt - not that feeling guilty makes it ok - and characters continue chastise him for years. The issue is due to a massive power imbalance between an older celebrity and a girl too young to have the life experience required to fully understand the repercussions. Just because you like Cody Ko (I did too) does not make this at all acceptable.

I haven’t seen many people mention this, but the ages are 17 and 25. And those can be the ages of a high school senior and their teacher. I had a student teacher who was 22 when I was 17. So it makes me think, how would people feel about it then; if Tana was a student and Cody was her teacher. Would the conversation be the same? Would people still say “oh it was Tana what did she say/do/wear?”.
To me I think it’s very telling how many people claim that because Tana was a “party girl” it wasn’t that bad. But to me it can feel worse in this case. Why is a 25 year old hanging around younger “party girls”. I know many kids start their partying era around 17/18 especially in Canada. Because it really is not okay. That sort of thing for so long has been so normalised like, "oh they just like older men/women" not "that adult hooking up with teens is a fucking creep"
I "dated" someone who was 26 when I was 17, so I can speak from direct experience when I say any adult willing to get with anyone who has the -teen suffix on their age, is fucking gross. I'm glad this is a more common realisation now. Trust me, especially to any young girls out there: hooking up with older guys is not the flex you want it to be, you are being taken advantage of. Addendum to add: for me, an adult is someone who is fully grown and developed. 18 is legal drinking age in my country, but I personally don't think I could get with and/or date anyone under 25, which is the age that our brains finish developing. I'm 27, and I can't fathom how anyone 25+ can just be down for *any* age with "teen" in it. People get weird about 18 and 19 but I dunno, I hear "teen" and immediately my brain just says, "that's a child"
This is someone who has not had the life experience to understand the full context of adulthood and predation. This is someone who, even if they've been sexually active before that age, still doesn't truly have a grasp on what a healthy adult relationship be it romantic or just intimate, should be. I can't see anyone with "teen" still in their age as another adult equal to myself and I'm not sorry for saying that, nor do I understand (or want to involve myself with) other fully-grown adults who look at anyone under 20 as a potential bang and/or partner

I got an off-feeling when he covered Girl Defined. The two of them obviously spread a lot of misogynistic and hateful ideas and deserve to be criticised, but he didn't bring any of that up... just made fun of the way they speak and look. It wasn't nearly enough to be an indictment of his character, but it did leave a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Now with everything we know it adds up to an unpleasant character

I felt that away about the “That’s cringe” episode with Skippy. I made a comment on how Cody seemed like a frat boy womanizer a few years back but I got hate and I felt bad so I deleted it. But I never went back to that video until recently and the signs were there. The way that he objectifies those women and even Noel seemed irritated by it spoke volumes.

Same. I watched a few of his videos once because the algorithm suggested it, and he and a friend were playing that phone game Episodes, you know the one?
Now there is a lot of ways to make fun of that app, watching a play through of one of the stories can be pretty fun if the UA-camr is fun. But their whole entire one joke for the video was “hehehe we made our character a lesbian hehehehe she’s gonna do lesbian stuff hehehehe I hope we get to watch lesbian sex” and okay so the humor here is middle school boy. Got it. Goodbye 👋🏻

I've heard from many sources that the Gabbie Hanna clip was scrubbed from the internet but it's available in a public video from Repzilla 2 years ago called 'Gabbie Hanna Tried To Sell Tana Mongeau's Trauma' it even has the same filter over the clip used in D'Angelos video. This was in a video posted by Coffee and Cults. Imo this all has been swept under the rug quite a few times but seems the information has always been available publicly. D'Angelo as a respected creator did a commendable job bringing this all to light starting a bigger conversation that should of happened years ago.

I literally had the same thing happen to me with a friend group of people, all 25+, when I was 16/17/18. A 30 year old in that group pursued me, and then after he was done, another couple pursued me too.
Then, They made me out to be a toxic ex and used the fact that I was abused and have mental health issues as a result against me. When I finally decided to cut them all off, they said I was “in an echo chamber” because my new chosen family was telling me what they did was bad. They even said it was “cruel” of me to cut them off right before a vacation, making it so they couldn’t enjoy it.

Lots of women have been talking about this, but it's not enough until the major channels that are run by men talk about this. It killed me the way Tana described her experience because it hits so close to home. For me, it wasn't until my nieces got toward their teen years that I was like "If grown men approached any of them the way they did me all throughout my teens, I would cut the bastards!" and it was only then that I started to see clearly what happened with me all that time, multiple times, and how screwed up it was that I had adults all around me who were supposed to protect me who were cool with it. I had a very similar life to what Tana described prior to UA-cam with her parents and if I had to guess, she probably had things that were more traumatic, more violent that happened to her (she even said as much on her podcast) which helps a young girl to feel like "This isn't wrong.... this is not trauma....I know trauma!" That makes the situation even harder to see for what it is when you are young. It really makes me mad when I see comments saying something to the effect of 'Tana is fine with it!' It is not on the person who was a minor to decide it's wrong. That is the whole damn point of statutory rape laws. Plus, like she said, like I can also say, when you have had more traumatic experiences happen, it muddies the waters when you look back at it ... until you see it through the eyes of your reaction if that was a young girl close to you once you are grown.
Thank you for just keeping the heat on Cody instead of dragging other friends and creators into this. I feel like one of the ways these scum bags end up evading taking responsibility for what they have done is by people bringing everyone else into it and digging up completely irrelevant things, things that have nothing to do with the serious crime in question, that everyone around them has ever done. This is not about Brittany Broski not speaking out hard enough (she started out a fan before she met him so yeah, this probably sucks for her but more importantly.... she didn't commit statutory rape). It's not about his wife letting Emma Chamberlain hit a damn vape once as a teenager or what his friends knew. The heat needs to be kept on HIM and on what HE has done. Period.

a few of female creators in commentary space, angelika for example, were speaking about it for a long time, discussing the topic. but only when another man (d'angelo) spoke about it, everyone started to talk ☠️
    it's honestly depressing

    • @millipedie
      @millipedie 3 місяці тому +12

To be fair d’angelo is a bigger creator.

@millipedie yes, of course, but i think creators in commentary space usually check if anything is happening, looking if some shit is happening. or, at least they should. especially in the situations like this, its important to discuss such topics for bigger creators to reach bigger audience. but it seems to me, some people saw some content about it and chose to stay silent, unfortunately. (and some of them maybe genuinely didn't know and it's okay, considering the silence)

This is just a huge testament to how people treat women like gabby and tana, both have negative images and yet they both said the same thing years apart and still no one took then seriously until a male youtuber with a good image made a vid...feels really gross to me. I hope people change.. :(

To be clear: Even if it wasn't a crime, even if this happened sonewhere where age of consent is 17, it's still disgusting for a 25 year old to sleep with a teenager. Yes, that includes 18 and 19 year olds, before anybody asks. If you disagree, try to be quick about it. I'd hate for you to be late picking up your girlfriend from middle school.

Oof. 33:54 it bothers me when people immediately jump to guilty by association, but there is honestly no way you could have known. As someone who has been in Alice’s shoes, I never blamed any of our friends for not stopping the way my partner treated me. Because he didn’t treat me that way in front of people! I’m sorry for people immediately jumping to conclusions, and I’m sorry that you had to lose a friend that way
As far as the Cody Ko situation, I’m amazed that there is still dirt to be dug up on this guy! Kudos to the amazing research you’ve put in, I always appreciate the effort you put into your videos

At this point, I feel like there should be a paper about how allegations like these only gain traction 7-8 years after. There have been SO MANY examples (not just w/ UA-cam, celebrities, politicians as well) where there was no traction the first time and only did the second time around. Could be due to victims aging up and acknowledging in adulthood that what happened was fucked up, but I've seen it happen even with adults

I remember the videos of him with that little girl on vine! My kids were watching him and it was the young girl in the front seat and I believe Cody was in the back seat and the guy driving was questioning about whether or not the two of them were dating and she looked extremely uncomfortable and I forgot what else happened in that clip. I remember having a talk with my daughter's about that and told them that that was highly inappropriate and that anybody above the age of 18 was off limits. I had a really long conversation with both of them that nothing good comes from somebody in their twenties wanting to be friends with somebody under the age of 18. I explained to them that trauma comes out of that not friendship!

Assuming Tana is being sincere, her protectiveness and empathy for girls that have been or are liable to be taken advantage of makes me respect her more because there are tons of victims in her position that turn around and go “Well it’s your turn now. I went through it, so you should too”.

This makes me sick, I was in a relationship at the age of 15 with a 21 year old and though I ended it because he was controlling and toxic. Said things like “I had to keep him interested so he didn’t cheat.” I also had to stand at my school gates on break times so he could see me, I didn’t realise how messed up it was until I was 25 and thought, there is no way I’d date a 15 year old. Just sucks it took so long for me to gain perspective, otherwise I’d have pressed charges. I am glad that now when people speak up they are listened to, pedophiles are often painted as old men but they are any age.

One of my Rules of the Internet: If Trisha Paytas steps back and Patricia comes out, the matter is both extremely serious and extremely current. Trisha will joke about serious things when she believes that they have been resolved (I don't think she realises how much time the wounds need to heal). By her treatment of the matter, Trisha is making clear that she thinks this man is still a danger.

I’ve been a Cody fan for quite some time. He was one of my comfort UA-camrs when life got too shitty. This whole situation is so disturbing and it’s been genuinely heartbreaking. I’m a victim of SA both through “family” and unfortunately an old classmate of mine as well. No one believed me in either situation, and I can confidently say: not being believed is the worst feeling there is. I’m beyond saddened by how people have treated Tana over this. She’s 100% in the right for having the actual courage to speak about it. I just wish I could give her a big hug. For anyone reading this who’s gone/going through something similar, remember that your feelings are valid. You matter, and deserve to be believed and comforted. And lastly and most importantly, you are not alone. ❤️

I recently watched a review on 'the boys' yes its insanely gross but they pointed out the social commentary on how much ppl with power get away with anything. Famous athletes, politians and famous ppl in general. As much as I think it's awful to prey on teenagers which will catch up to you. I remember back in the day with certain footballers, the amount of accusations they got and nothing really ever got done about it. If Cody actually gets away with this I'll lose my faith in humanity.

Not saying any of it was okay, but why are you just losing faith now when powerful men have been getting away with this exact thing since forever? America literally elected a known r@pist to be president.
