My son was diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis in October 2018. Doctors have told us to not expect recovery and to accept that he will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. We refuse to believe that. Thank you so much VIctoria for being such an inspiration and beacon of hope. We will never give up. Thank you for sharing your incredible story. God Bless you.

I contracted transverse myelitis when I was 18 - whilst it rendered me quite seriously ill for over a year (and it took a couple of years to recover), I thankfully only suffered minor symptoms compared to Victoria and many other cases. I still suffer from some residual issues, including chronic neck pain (the TM affected me at C2,4) - I am extremely grateful and humbled that my experience was just a whisper to Victoria and other sufferers experiences. xxx

Same, I have transverse myelitis currently recovering now with a C5 injury and I didn’t suffer her injuries to that degree. Keeping our emotional & mental health in check is the hardest part but we can do it. We have to keep being faithful because it takes time to recover but recovery is possible for EVERYONE. Melissa I’ll keep you in my prayers for a full recovery and for a dismissal of your chronic pain. May God bless you!

It was the nurses who bullied her more than anyone else. In her book, she mentions how some
Nurses were horrible to her both physically and mentally. If I was her and her parents, I would’ve reported that kind of abuse so they’d get their license taken away and even get jail time.

    Hello Victora,
Listened to your interview twice and will encourage others to do the same, your whole story is a magnificent reflection and inspiration not just for the people and families of affected patients, but all those who endeavoured to aspire to their goals in life. I did find the fact that despite your dire situation you had been bullied at school, I cannot think of anything more heinous or low as to bully someone who clearly cannot defend themselves, I know kids can be ruthless but your experience just goes beyond the pale. My father had a serious stroke years ago and like yourself overheard two nurses writing him off giving him a one in ten chance of survival. He beat the odds. I wish you all the best

Glad I’m the only one who was thinking and wondering about that! That’s why I checked the comments. Poor girl had to suffer with daily grand mal seizures all day long for 4 years before getting any kind of relief? Why they didn’t do the sedative when the seizures first started…? Why’d they make the poor kid and her family suffer all day every single day for 4 years before giving her some relief? Bc at the end of the day, it’s all about $$$ in good ole ‘Murica. Our healthcare system is so fucked up. Those seizures are already VERY dangerous to the brain, not to mention especially when you have a spinal cord injury like she has! Never shoulda had to wait 4 years for help with her seizures. I hope she uses her voice on fixing our healthcare system too. Poor girl should have gotten help a lot sooner instead of being given up on by her doctors.

Victoria is an amazing woman to go from being in a coma for almost 4 years to be locked in your body and not be able to speak must have been scary.
Victoria is a good example of the power of the mind to heal the body lots of hard work to achieve her dreams. That promise to God is a true testament of the power of faith and by her story of overcoming great odds with the help and love of her family.

My grand father was a commender of the military hospitlal. He wanted me to become a super soldier like my dad. He injected something when I was a baby. He told me my heart beat is so weak the doctors will say I am going to die in a month because of the injection. My dad a processional super soldier never wanted me to become a soldier and never taught me the combat skills. So I just became a boy with super strong heart. I should've trained to become an olympian. Too late now.

Doctors are limited in some capacities. They give negative input when they don’t know what direction to go.

I am so happy and grateful to God for her miraculous recovery. All the Glory and Honor belongs to God for healing this Beautiful lady and for helping this lovely family. The mother said something that everyone seems to skip and block out. She said she fell to her knees and prayed to God. She did not even mentioned anything about God answering her prayers in the video and now her daughter is healed. It's interesting that no one gave honor and Glory to the one who healed her. The one I am referring to is God. Funny how are so quick people forget. Just a thought 🤔

How did they fix it? Which hospital? Where I trained we would have fought to save her. I still feel terrible that I couldn't fight for Otto Warmbier. I wasn't his doctor. But I could have emailed one of my former professors and said, "Remember that case we had, with the sixty year old civil engineer, who went into a coma from a single dose of ativan, and we woke him up against the odds, by treating him for the liver failure that the ativan triggered, in an atypical case? Couldn't you write to or phone the docs taking care of Warmbier and share that possible suggestion, have them do for Otto what we did for that comatose engineer to wake him up? Wasn't it funny that the first thing he said to the chief resident yelling "Close your eyes!" right in his face was....kind of rude, but it showed that he was wide awake and ticked off at the doctor who was yelling in his face! Maybe they can do the same for Otto to wake him up, using the same treatments we gave that engineer. Maybe Otto got beaten up by the North Korean guards who kicked him in the liver, so that he had a traumatic hepatitis,, and a single dose of ativan really did put him into a hepatic coma....and we can fix that sometimes with the right treatments, if we're lucky and catch it in time." He was chairman of neurology at a prominent university by then, so he could have carried it off, emailing medical advice to Otto's local doctors. But I was too intimidated by the fact that by then I was already dealing with right wing creeps terrorizing me already for helping a "mixed race" kid in my practice. So I just sat tight and let Otto's own doc's handle it, without reaching out to my former professor who was chair of neuro at chapel hill by then. For all I know, maybe there was no way to save Otto after all. Maybe our treatment plan that had worked for the engineer wouldn't even have worked for Otto. We'll never know.
A different prof of mine got targeted by creeps for doing good as well. And I got targeted by similar creeps for saving minority kids' lives (or trying my best to do that with every kid, not just the whitewhitewhite ones.) The ultra right-wing domestic terrorist creeps are doing harm in our country at all levels, even intimidating and terrorizing people who can save kids like Victoria. They make up slander and try to destroy the career of docs who save "the wrong" kids, i.e., minority ones, or for using science techniques, like stem cells, that the terrorist rednecks "don't approve" of, even though the redneck terrorist creeps can hardly read. And if it was their kid, they'd be begging us to help them by any means possible, and we probably would help them. But when we help a "minority" kid, it can cost us our careers or even our lives from the domestic terror creeps' targeting us, with slander, with home invasions, with car crashes, with poison, with all kinds of false rumors, with ...putting out someone's eye, with cutting the brakeline or serpentine belt, on and on and on. The doctors who know how to fix kids like Victoria are getting targeted by redneck creeps in America so that it really is like trying to practice in North Korea in some ways, in a Communist style environment where the terrorist local creeps hate knowledge, hate minority kids, and hate doctors who use knowledge to help minority kids. We're the experts trying to save lives, getting targeted and harmed for years by religions redneck hate groups that destroy the lives of the very doctors and their families who have the skills to save lives. It's not right what has been happening. The elite law enforcement agencies should go after the domestic terrorist religions creeps and put them in jail as the criminals they are. They have the funding and the mandate now. Let's have them get to work, so that good people can do our jobs to save lives, without having to worry that someone will destroy our career or our lives, for daring to help "certain" children as we do our jobs of healing the sick.

And we are trained to be much more careful at delivering bad news. But for kids like Victoria, we fight, fight, fight, like a Dylan Thomas poem: go not gently into that good night, RAGE (silently) against the dying of the light...and consult Neuro Immunology. And take as many hours as you need to to put the orders into effect to save the kid. Stay as late as you need to to fix the kid. Invent a cure if you have to.... And some of us have done that. Some of us have done that.
