    This video is what prevented me from returning this device. I bought this specifically because I want to start recording the things I do on guitar and then layer on bass and percussion while I'm spending nights at hotels because I travel for work almost all the time. I didn't see how it was possible with the H5 and thought Guitar Center was just feeding me a line, and was ready to take it back. Then I found this. The H5 is exactly the form and factor that I was looking for, and now it does all the things I was hoping it does. Small, great quality, and easy to use once you know how. Great video. Thanks!

    • @fishisflying

      same thought! this process is way too complicated and not intuitive at all. I was even wondering if some firmware update could help by skipping some steps, but I guess it is not possible. Plus the mixdown is very slow process, if a musician wants to create in a natural workflow, waiting for the machine and navigating through menus kills it a bit..

    The H5 (and the H6) actually lack the easy four-track capability of the HN4. With the HN4, you can use the X-Y mic to overdub to tracks 2, 3, and 4. Not so with the H5 and H6; the X-Y mic on these two more "advanced" models can only record onto tracks 1 and 2; (at once, not separately); you will need to use an external mic or instrument leads connected to the bottom 1/2 inputs to overdub onto tracks 3 and 4. Yes, there is sort of a workaround with this, but it is convoluted , complicated, a pain in the butt and takes a lot of time. Do not purchase the H5 or H6 if you are DIY home recorder who likes to create overdubbed 4-track recordings (get the H4N, instead).
    Zoom should update the firmware for these models to allow the H5 and H6 the same 4-track functionality as the less expensive H4N.

      I totally agree! I bought the H4n Pro but "upgraded" to the H5 for a single flaw with the H4n Pro -- it is tedious to mute a playback track because you have to go into a menu and scroll the volume to minimum rather than just press a "mute" button. So I thought the H5 would do everything the H4n Pro does, but with the addition of using a track button to mute the track, as it was advertised to have three modes: mute, record, playback. Wrong -- the H4n Pro so far seems far superior and more intuitive for multi-track recording. Each of the four tracks is easily selected separately for recording by its track button. The display allows you to more clearly select each track to set playback properties for each track, including the volume, centering, which recorded file you want to play on that track, etc. The scroll wheel feels much more solid and higher quality. It is easy to direct any input to any of the four tracks using buttons -- one set of buttons to select the track, another set of buttons to select the input(s). However, I don't know of a way to force the built-in mikes to make a "mono" file, I think they always create a stereo file, but not a big issue I think. The projects are more intuitive -- rather than thinking of a project as a "recording" which you then "overdub" in the H5, in the H4n Pro a project is more like a set of tracks that you record. You can playback any four tracks at a time, but you can keep adding tracks to that project by renaming them from the default "TR1-00" type names that the devices defaults to. You can bounce them (mix) if you want to single file, but I like to keep them separate and if I need to produce a more-than-four track production, import into the computer and use software. The H4n Pro also has a fabulous set of built-in effects you can apply to your inputs to turn an electric guitar into a myriad of effects styles, or give your vocals some excellent delay/reverb/etc effects to get a professional performance or recording sound; why was that left out on the H5? Other than the cumbersome way of muting playback tracks, the H4n Pro so far seems like a far superior device for multi-track recording over the H5. The absence of interchangeable mike modules is probably more of an issue for video producers who want to use the device as a field audio recorder on a DSLR camera. However, you can still easily connect a shotgun or whatever mike into the H4n Pro so long as you have a way to mount it to your liking. I am very disappointed with the H5 so far, I feel it is dumbed down compared to the H4n Pro. I will try harder to unravel the mystery of getting control over multi-track recording, but it seems like a very awkward if not crippled process. So I think I'll keep the H4n Pro. I would probably go with the TASCAM multi-track recorder, like the DP-008EX, but I don't think it accepts XLR inputs or provides phantom power. I will say that the speed with which the H5 boots up is a plus, but for what I do, not too important. Much more important to a video shooter probably. Always hard to find the "perfect" gadget at the price you want.

      Does the above video of the H5 not do what you're talking about? I had and sold an H6, because I couldn't use the onboard XY mics to overdub and multi-track basic home demos. But it looks like the H5 is doing that. Confused.

      Me too. A battery fault with my H4N led me to upgrade to the H5. I mainly used the 4-track MTR mode. Now I find doing this on the more advanced H5 is convoluted. Can't understand why Zoom felt the H4's incredibly simple MTR function was so unimportant to users.

    • @DebErney
      @DebErney 5 років тому

      I agree. The H4n overdub was a bit more intuitive. But the H5 does have a few other features that I felt were better for me in the long run. Would be nice to have both, though.

    Hola! Ayyyyyy! How awkward, cumbersome protocols Zoom designers to make the simplest 1+1=2 operation. Beautiful possibility in theory of the machine, very useful by the way, but with a map route scary and hard to follow, sincerely. Otherwise my newborn H5 unit looks pretty solid, arrived hours ago, and hope will be instrumental in my upcoming audio moves. Got at home units of The Arq-96, MS70CDR and B1Four, all working properly and proudly, even in my sudden amateur inmersion at audio affairs, entering the "6" and under covid the new world order. Best regards and greetings from Madrid City Spain.

    Hey, great video, thank you. I have a question about the zoom ecm-3 cable you are using. I am interesting in getting the cable to use with the ssh-6 on a boom, with the purpose being to have just the microphone capsule at the end of the boom and monitor and control levels from the H5 body on the ground. My concern is that since the gain control knob is on the shotgun capsule itself would I need to bring the boom down in order to change the level thus negating half the purpose of the extension cable itself? Is there a way to control the gain of the casual with other buttons? I hope there is, I was really excited to be able to use the shotgun on a boom.
    Thanks for the great products!
    Keep up the good work

    • @ZoomSoundLab
      @ZoomSoundLab  8 років тому

      +SSWIDTMS There would be no way to remotely control the gain. I would suggest using Backup Record to record a doubled track 12 dB lower then your original to give you a safety if you had the gain set too high.

This recording you have on the video, although a tiny bit of white noise, it sounds excellent and way better than anything I've done with it so far. I am also using the same mic and I'm in a quiet room. I really don't understand why the recording in your video sounds so much better. Can you tell us what gain setting you had when recording the guitar part for this video? Did you use a noise reducer? Any other tips would be much appreciated, thank you

    • @11rockiton
      @11rockiton 7 років тому +1

      I A/B'd an H5 alongside my audio interface (Avid Fast Track Solo). I first used an SM58 to record into both. The H5's preamp did not have sufficient gain for the microphone/source so the recording ended up being noisy and unusable. I then used the onboard XY microphone on the H5. After comparing both, the recordings with the Avid are livelier and musical sounding whilst those with the H5 are clean and sterile. Of course, this may be attributed to the microphones. If you do purchase the H5 and want to use a separate mic, you would have to purchase something like a Cloudlifter or FetHead to give you additional gain. If it were me, I would only buy the H5 if I really needed something portable. YMMV

    Is it possible to do "live dubbing" with this recorder? By this I mean, I connect the recorder to a live sound source, such as a radio or into a phone where I can play a speech, using one of the line-in sockets at the bottom and record it live. But at the same time, I will speak into the x/y mic on top so as to record my own voice on a separate track SIMULTANEOUSLY. Is that feasible with Zoom H5 or Zoom H4N? I require this setup for practising simultaneous interpretation.

    Can you export the already recorded LR tracks to tracks 1 and 2 on the Zoom H6? Or is this feature only on the H5?

      This feature is not available on the H6, only the H4n Pro and H5.

    Hi, how many layers of overdubbing can I create? Thank you.

      infinite, it just creates a new audio file combining the original with the over dub. However it can only record onto 4 separate tracks.

      You are only able to use WAV format when overdubbing on the H5.

    Hi one quick question, is there any difference between using an external cable connected to your phone/laptop and using and SD for recording any musical song? Like are all the settings and customizations the same?
