Hands down, the greatest live performance ever. No overdubs, no backing tracks, no auto tune. This is pure talent to an insane level. Neil plays drums, temple blocks, triangles, xylophone, wind chimes, bell tree and concert chimes all in this one song
It really is just a STUNNING performance....THE definitive version
Alex and Geddy have been friends since Junior High, their chemistry is unparalelled. Neil joined them in 75, and even 40 years later he was still "the new guy", no finer trio of musicians has ever existed!!
Nah man. He was asked to join in 74. First gig was August 14 1974 in pgh pa. First American show.
🙏🙏🙏 to that!
Neil will always be "The New Guy" hahahahaaa
The New Guy seemed to hold his own ok for a few decades. 😊
And on tour when they weren't playing they stayed in their hotel rooms! No wild rock star parties. Gene Simons of Kiss couldn't figure them out LOL
Rush is another rabbit hole that once you know of it's existence, you can't help but go down.
Neil Peart . . . . Your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer…….
Indeed. Not called "the Professor" for nothing ...
RIP to the man who taught me so so much.
Right behind John Bonham
*percussionist
Dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you are bored like me atm you can watch all the new series on InstaFlixxer. Have been watching with my brother for the last weeks =)
RUSH brought us all the mystical magical fantasy music that no other band would touch, and they did it so successfully with class. I have followed them from the beginning and it felt like I had lost a life long friend when they called it quits. I was brought to tears when Neil passed.
You know a person is special that when they pass, so many of us are brought to tears despite the fact that we have never met them. Such was Neil Peart.
Rush is the most talented band ever hands down. Geddy Lee is doing vocals, playing a double neck bass, and playing all the keyboards and synths you hear with his feet at the same time. Shit is actually just mindboggling.
Alex was also playing synthesizer Moog pedals
They are all totally mind boggling
Geddy's double-neck is actually a four-string bass, top, and six-string guitar bottom. he is playing the guitar during Alex's finale guitar solo, just not shown in this video. the later live versions of Xanadu do show Geddy playing guitar at the same time as Alex. plus bass foot pedals. Epic my first live show as a 15-year-old kid was mindblown and still am with Rush
Dudes gettys double neck was not a double neck base, the lower is a guitar that he plays near the end of the song...
Cheers..
@@robl2058 Geddy's doubleneck is actually bass and 12 string guitar, Geddy's Book of Bass p.386.
I've been listening to Rush since my high school days over 38 years now and still going strong...Just wanted to thank-you guys for your positive feedback on Rush because truly they are musical geniuses. As you see from the other comments they have a loyal fan base. Again I want to thank you guys for recognizing true talent hands down Rush will be remembered as a one an a generational band that has ever existed. The fact that Neil Pert (a drummer) wrote most of the songs they played is truly amazing. He is a genius and the best that has ever played that position. No disrespect to other drummers but hands down Neil will go down in the Hall of Fame of musicians with respected talent in the history books. It was no wonder why he was called the "Professor"!
This performance is one of the truly best Live performances by any band...ever.
Unquestionably
No doubt! 3 amazing musicians!!!
Inspired by a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Kubla Khan: In Xanadu did kubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree (fictitious place of paradise) but be carful what you wish for!
In Xanadu did Kublai Khan
A stately pleasure dome decree,
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea...
RUSH is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Always one of my fav bands!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Beautiful song !! RIP Neil Pert , best drummer ever !! 3 very talented guys !! This was PROG Rock!
It's hard to tell on a cellphone obviously but this concert video, "Exit Stage Left.".. is a truly magnificent sounding representation of the band at that point. They had always taken their live sound very seriously and because of the success of the "moving pictures " album, now had some money to bring a production out on the road and it sounds absolutely incredible especially given the technology of the time. I don't know if there's a remastered version of this released out there in the world but it would probably be stunning considering the original sound so good. Rush credit Kiss and the tours that they did with them early on for showing them how important it was to give an audience their money's worth and you can tell that they really took it to heart because rush was always Cutting Edge when I came to visual presentation and concert sound. Saw them a Dozen or more times over the years and they never sounded anything less than huge. Even in the dread 1980s with the digital keyboards and things sounding so thin, their livesound was still very powerful
Based on the poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was having an opium influenced dream about the palace of Xanadu. An insurance salesman woke him up and he had to write it all down before he forgot it.
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea…
Xanadu is a mythical place, Exit Stage Left is the album title, Rush's 1981 live tour.
Thats live version.
It was released in '77 in the album "A Farewell To Kings".
77. The first year I saw them.
You couldn't really see it, but Geddy and Alex also play synth foot pedals at different times throughout this song. Amazing only 3 guys could make so much sound and make it look so easy. More Rush please. RIP Neil Peart, the professor
Rush was tight af, amazing playing always. You can't say enough good things about them
Finally, some more Rush!!!
You guys need to watch "Working Man" live in Cleveland in 2011. Alex and Getty are 58 and Neil is 59 years old. Last song of a 3 hour concert and Alex and Getty go into GOD mode. One of the best live performances I've ever seen.
Not only does Geddy play bass, keyboards and sing, but he plays the Tarus bass pedals with his feet, but one thing most people miss is at 18:18 he's actually playing the closing riff of the song on a 6-string guitar which is the second neck on his.
Even in the few songs where they do use a background sample or sound effect, Rush has always demanded that it be manually triggered by someone in the group.
Exit Stage Left was the live album from 1981 "Moving Pictures" (studio album) tour. They played stuff from Their 1st 8 albums. 1974 -81. Xanadu was a song from "A Farewell to Kings" Album (1977). Rush basically recorded an album, toured rinse repeat until the mid 80s when they would take a few months off. They had 19 studio albums . 1 cover album and many live albums.Remember, Tool took a 13 yr break before Fear Inoculum. 5 years was longest Rush ever took toward end of their career
The three best musicians on their respective instruments- - in the greatest band to ever walk the planet.
Been a Rush fan for 32 of my 44 years. I still am in awe 3 people make this sound. Fucking incredible!
And that's is the moment that you start to discover that your idols had RUSH as their idols
And all three pretty much ego free. Pure love. Perfect
Well put. Their honesty, integrity, respect for each other and their fans and fearlessness to follow their own ever-changing path deserve our admiration. A total inspiration to me. A fond farewell to kings among musicians from this fan in Exeter, UK.
@@davecole2561 @Dave Cole Well said. Top 10 reasons I fell in love with Rush and these three guys. 1 Musicianship 2. Lyrics 3. They gave 100% at every show 4. The pure honesty in their music. 5 The respect and friendship they have with one another. 6. They are rebels, modern day warriors, if you will, lol.
7. Never taken themselves too seriously or let fame turn them into dirtbags, because they are all just decent human beings. Side note: I always loved their intro to their shows... Like Rash, and Peart in bed wirh Jerry Stiller, lol.. Alex's Dinosaurs and Barbie dolls and Geddys rotessierres, dryers, and of course, his homage to Spinal Tap with the mini Stonehenge on his synth. 8. Their dedication to their artistic growth for themselves first, fans second, and record label third. 'Most endangered species and the honest man, will survive annhiliation' 😊 9. Their fans - we are, without a doubt, the geeks, the freaks, and the weirdest looking, nicest group of fans on the planet. I miss seeing them live so much ... Because aside from the concert, the audience was filled with the most diverse group of people, all air drumming, air guitaring, air bassing? Lol. Sorry long list. 10.. Blah blah blah. Best speech ever, so very heartfelt for them and for us fans. Hello from Las Vegas, NV US. 😊
Well said
Back in the day they made every other band look and feel like second graders. They are all top tier talented. One of my favorite bands of all time. RIP Neil 🥺
At one point of the video Geddy was playing taurus pedals with his feet, while playing the bass and singing at the same time ! 3 different melodies at the same time !!! My favorite bassist hands down !
RIP Neil Peart. Xanadu is a mystical world. Exit Stage Left is the album name. Again Neil Peart. This planet isn’t the same and I’m not so stupid because of your lyrics. I’m 52 now. There were only 3 of them. Amazing talent. I saw them 30 times. Since I’m 14.
Edit: I love you guys for this!!!
Edit again: never any drama. Geddy Lee was the singer. True friends from childhood.
Try “Mission”. That’ll blow you away.
By-Tor and The Snow Dog from this show is amazing.
Honestly if they just sat and watched this whole show it would be fun to watch.
@@Largeincharge Facts!
Just listen to the nearly 12-minute version on their live album All the world's a stage from 1976. It's amazing...
This performance is from RUSH's simultaneously released live album and video called, "Exit, Stage Left" It was recorded live, in Montreal (Rush is from Canada), in 1981. Awesome concert, from beginning to end! I saw RUSH live 20 times, in my life, 'cause they never disappointed! "Virtuosos" is a great term for them, too, Smokey.
Fantastic. That's a great live album and 20 times! What memories you must have!
I thought it was recorded in Montreal.
Montreal
No it was recorded at the Montreal forum
@@kevindohn6776- Yes it was. Just like I said it was.
The greatest live performance of all time !!! .. R.I.P. Neil Peart . we miss you!
It's great seeing people from all around the world listening to Rush. It's just undeniable how talented these 3 guys are and we have 40 years of music and concerts to enjoy until the end of time.
Thank you for giving the lads a listen to and reacting to true professional musicians who tried harder than anyone to deliver a live show that duplicated their studio work.
Last of their kind and truly missed with Neils passing 😔
Ha! Geddy Lee lived up the street from me in East End of Toronto, we would wave to him most mornings on the way to school, he was super nice to all of us. Used to see him and Kim Mitchell strolling along the Boardwalk all the time, and of course, every New Years Eve, Rush and Max Webster at Maple Leaf Gardens...
Rush recorded this in one take...11 minutes, still blows my mind.
Don't know if you noticed, but both the guitarist and the bass player were also playing keyboards with their feet.
Alex doesn't play pedals like Geddy,, he's using his effects,, Has multiple effects,,, or stomp boxes,, and wah, wah,, and volume pedal,, delay,, chorus Phase shifter,, Etc,
Since 1977 Alex has used Bass pedals, in addition to his stomp boxes. He and Geddy endorsed Taurus Bass Pedals in the 70s. (Hint, they don't just make/trigger Bass sounds.)
@@paulhabat7746 Alex has Taurus pedals as well.
RUSH~ THE GREATEST TRILOGY OF MUSICIANS ~THAT EVER LIVED
Neil has the easiest job...
He gets to sit down!!😉
One of the best live performances.
EVER!!
Thanks guys.
I saw Rush live 11 times in my life including the tour from this show when it hit Detroit. My only regret is I didn't see them 12 times.
You North American fans were relatively lucky with their heavy touring in Canada and the USA, however. I'm in the UK and only got to see them 3 times. My goodness, what a band. A fond farewell to kings...
Man i've been waiting for Rush content by you guys forever now! Nice, BUT: you HAVE to do La Villa Strangiato, it's an absolute MUST-HEAR-TRACK by Rush
🙋🏿♀️ I 2nd La Villa Strangiato! 😊🐰
Hell yes, y'all thought Xanadu melted your brain, you ain't seen nothing yet! Got your live version right here :)
ua-cam.com/video/eK1hmDpa8bo/v-deo.html
@@EPIzen24 Exactly that version is the best one! Next to Exit Stage Left Live version haha, i hope they do a video!
I second this...La Villa Strangiato...(the studio version) Also, I think Headlong Flight, off of their final album is a tour de force. Three guys in their late 50's playing like guys in their 20's. Awesome, overlooked song.
Yes before you do 2112an do the live version of la villa..
Cheers..
This is probably the greatest live rendition of Xanadu Rush ever did. This is the one to rate, gentlemen!
The bassist, vocalist, keyboardist ( feet and hands), is Geddy Lee. He was born Gary, but his mom said his name with an accent, which sounded like “Geddy”, and it stuck. pretty cool story. If you see any of their docs, Rush’s whole story is fascinating.
This reminds me of riding around with my dad in his old Chevy truck. Feel so lucky to grow up in a time when there is such great music. ❤🤘
Agreed!!
love it kid...same way my daughter learned about RUSH and many other great bands! Cheers
I have lost count as to how many times I have seen reactions to Xanadu live on UA-cam...this video is legendary. Alex, Geddy and Neil were overthetop musicians.
Rush has 19 studio albums, 11 live albums, 11 compilation albums and 13 video albums. You need a "book of Rush" to open weekly, and, the Rush army will feed you well. Geddy, Alex and Neil (may he rest in peace) are/were masters of their craft, and were also friends - never having suffered the "diva" issues, that ruined other bands.
I actually Saw this tour in March of 81. I was in 9th grade and played Guitar in a band. LIFE Changing!!! LA VILLA STRANGIATO From this show gives this a run for it's money as far as epicness.
yep I even like L V S even better if that's even possible.
Truth
Watch the entire concert video. Tool is obviously amazing, but NOTHING compares to these 3 together, especially during this period live. Watch this one again and again. SHIT, pushing up on 40 years of doing just that, and I am still blown away and notice something else that rips my skull back.
The greatest live performance ever! Hands down..
I've been a RUSH fan for many years. Got into them around 1982. The more I listen to them or see their live performances, the more I'm blown away and impressed!
So you know that meme with Master splinter and the ninja turtles? RUSH is master Splinter and Queensryche, Dream Theater, Opeth and TOOL are the turtles
That would make Yes Hamato Yoshi
Yup.... and Danny will tell you what an impact he had on him.....Neil launched the careers of countless drummers
He really was your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. RIP
Before the Octopus, there was the Professor. The R30 solo is a must see!
Mike Portnoy, Dream Theater have done many Rush covers.
Many musicians will tell you they honed their skills on Rush's songs.
@@piratecat5113 As a drummer myself, I can definitely tell you Neil's parts are great to learn on. They are always tricky but it feels amazing when you finally get it right!
Best Live Performance of all time:
Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, foot pedal synthesizer, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells.
It’s when you realize that only 3 people have made all of that sound, that you can truly appreciate it!
No that's Neil Peart inspiring a little boy named Danny Carey to become a great drummer. Watch Neil Pearts drum solo if you haven't yet.
This is a pretty amazing song to see live in person, I saw Rush live in 2008 for the Snakes And Arrows tour, 2011 for Time Machine tour, and 2015 for their 40th Anniversary tour.
Not enough thumbs up for y’all’s reaction to my favorite Rush song. I’ve listened to your reaction many times cause it never gets old. Lots of people are reacting to Rush these days, but I can see in your faces it’s real!
By-tor and the Snow Dog is a good one!
Thanks guys from up the road a little ways
A three man philharmonic orchestra in one of the greatest live performances ever recorded!
RIP Professor 💔... forever “The Sprit Of Radio”!!🤘🏻
RUSH PLAY MORE
RUSH: Another band I have every CD and DVD for that I can find.
It's about time you got to more of this!
It's the R30 and RUSH IN RIO "Drum Solos" that you really need to watch!
Neil, you will be missed! RIP!!!
PS….They were really that good live…..I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve seen them live here in the US and in Canada. Neil was something special. I’m so glad I was lucky enough to see him. I don’t think there is another band that complimented themselves so well. You could always see they were having a blast being up there and throwing it down! Just amazing. Thanks again guys
Alex Geddy and Neil are the ultimate multi-taskers.
Thanks to a friend who was really influenced by Neil Peart, I was turned on to Rush in high school in the 70s. When I first heard them I was blown away, and now all these years later this masterpiece still pleases my ears just as much.
This was the first tour I got to see - my band and I were blown away. I had been introduced to Rush two years earlier (1979) by a friend of my brother's who loaned me their first 6 studio albums and their first live album. This tour was for the album Moving Pictures and the live album title is "Exit Stage Left" - since you were wondering where that name fits in. Incredible that just 3 guys can make so much happen on stage - especially back then. It was extremely rare for them to record anything that they couldn't reproduce live. It was a point of pride. Where to go next? Damn, there's 40 years of material to explore! Personally, I would recommend the studio versions of the following tracks (I just checked what you already reviewed)): La Villa Strangiato, The Spirit of Radio, Freewill (if you want another Exit Stage Left track, I'd go with this one, but the studio version is truly awesome) - also: Natural Science, Limelight, The Camera Eye, Subdivisions, Digital Man. That's just a small sample from the period of '78-'82, but those are some of my absolute favorites. Enjoy!
One of these days you need to spend a half hour to listen to Rush's masterpiece 2112.
You guys were hilarious on this one! Thanks for reviewing this - when you asked what live show/song to play from Rush, this and La Villa Strangiato were at the top of the list!
Glad you loved it. This was the song and live version that put me over the top. I bought the cassette (Yes cassette) in 1982 and fell in love with the whole Exit stage left Live album (cassette). I got 43 live shows under my belt and there are tens of thousands of other Rush fans who've seen them more than me. Freewill, By-tor and the snow dog/In the End easy choices to get blown away on. Loved your reactions. Brought back great memories.
You should react to more Rush, there isn't a bad song tho, if you want try 2112 or Natural Science, it will be the best journey in life!
Bytor and the Snow Dog from Exit Stage Left is also awesome. Also la Villa Strangiato official music video is amazing. Working man live in Cleveland. As someone else mentioned Alex Lifeson - guitar and Geddy Lee - vocals, bass and Keyboards have been best friends since they were 13. Neil joined the band later in 1974. The three of them had an amazing synergy. Neil's drum kit was huge and he looks dwarfed behind and he was 6' 4". They all make it look so effectlessly. 🇨🇦✌
I've always said this , "Rush is the band musicians go see"
“Three virtuosos in the exact same band.” ❤️
What makes this so great is that it so closely matches the studio version. Check that out...and read along with the lyrics.
When you introduce someone to Rush, they REALLY need to see them live in person! Every non fan that I took to a rush show, fell in love right there! Loosing Niel feels like loosing a family member. I love that I've enjoyed them for decades and will always have there work!
Nice reaction guys. This song came out in 1977, and the concert was from 1981. Yes Neil kept adding percussion and drums to his set. The double neck guitar and bass are amazing. Enjoy the journey.
Rush - Subdivisions is the song that everyone should listen to, it's lyrics a so full of truths it's timeless......
Glad you guys liked it so much. Rush is the shizznit and you would like more live stuff
another thing; none cannot not notice one of the most important aspects of rush that makes them bar none beyond other music - is their unique instincts of timing, composing, and intuitive knowing - of each of them -
The last album was called clockwork angels and it is by far the best work and all of the work is amazing so you can only imagine how good this is. The last track is called the garden and it is their masterpiece!
Xanadu means an idealized place of great or idyllic magnificence and beauty, that’s why he’s saying that in the song with such vigor towards finding a perfect place it’s a place we all wanna reach
Thank you guys. These Rush songs mean so much to me and you bring a new appreciation to their genius. Cheers
I’ve said this on many reaction channels. As a child of the 70’s there were great rock n roll bands… Zep, deep purple, stones, the who, sabbath, yes, Van Halen pre Sammy Hagar, etc. But there were only two experiences, Pink Floyd and Rush.
This is one of the best live recordings ever. Exit Stage Left is the best live albums ever
Danny is the octopus, Neil is the professor.
Exit stage left is the tour for the moving pictures album have you done "the camera eye" from that tour/album
Great reaction! I think "mesmerized" is the perfect word to describe how this song makes you feel. It's like it takes your mind on this long-winding trip through the eyes of another. RUSH really were ahead of their time!
One of there greatest songs
tubular bells
When you went to see Rush live. You were not going to a concert you were going on an epic adventure journey of music. It was a living story and for over 40years they told the story of music, like no other band has or could.
one of the best composed songs ever in rock - bar none - and there are many versions of this song, but this is their best
Xanadu is a reference to a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.Victorian Poet
This is music. This is talent. This is many many many hours of hard work and practice.
This is NOT America’s Got Karaoke
Geddy Lee is the multitasker champion!
When you went through at the end the list of what he does, you failed to notice that the also plays floor (Torus) pedals and while Alex is doing a somewhat solo at the end, Geddy is playing the six string guitar (the bottom neck on his double). He doesn’t carry that bastard around to show off!
RIP Neil. Thank you.
Rush has influenced more Bands than any other!! There should be a separate place in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame for Mr. Peart, RIP.
Definitely check out the Medley of “By-Tor and the Snow Dog” from the Exit Stage Left Tour. Mind blowing.🤯
It's more than talent, it's GENIUS!!! 👍
Three Godz of Rock! There isn’t another rock band in history where all the members are master virtuosos and have been together producing the best rock for 40 plus years. Over and above their Godlike ability with instruments is their unparalleled songwriting (all 3 write/compose. Deep, insightful, staying relevant over 1/2 century, and maintaining their fan base. There is great and then there is Rush, alone atop the mountain!
Saw this tour in Hollywood FL in 1981. Still remember it vividly.
I am old.. I saw this tour :) "A double neck guitar... You don't see that too often.."... Geddy playing a bass and 12 string.... Double neck.
We are blessed to have had these three virtuosos play music together. They were just on the same wavelength in most all regards. They always made sure each was credited equally, so there were no hard feelings. They always had to all agree on something, or they didn't do it. Their synergy is the key to their longevity. So many bands crumbled due to lack of harmony. These guys just had the right characteristics to be able to make great music for 40+ years. Thanks for the reaction!
Yes! More Rush is necessary! Neil Peart and Danny Carey are my favorite drummers ever. Do Natural Science next 🤙
The performance was incredible, but don’t forget that they WROTE that! Even more incredible!
One of the greatest epic Rush songs!
"Exit... Stage Left" is what Snagglepuss (the cartoon pink cat) used to say after doing something wrong and it was time to leave quick.
This is why they are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 3 guys pulled off this music.
Really enjoyed your reaction! - 'Exit Stage Left' concert 1981 Montreal Canada - watch the entire concert - best performance in rock history by far - beyond words - world's smallest orchestra - no one combined rock, jazz & classical like this - legends of rock -
Rush is my second favorite band next to tool. I know you guys will love them if you listen to more. Try YYZ and something like 2112. Their great and Neil Peart is god level.
I wish you could have seen them LIVE. THREE hours of your jaw on the floor!!! 🤯
*EPIC!!!*
I officially fell in love with your channel after this reaction.
