My brother made me believe the only option - apart from choosing the option that sends you back a couple of stages - at the end of the game was killing each other before fighting the boss. All my life I thought it wasn't possible for us to fight him together... i never felt so betrayed!
As someone who never grew up with a Genesis or this game: it's amazing. I played this years later with a good friend who grew up with it and we had a blast, the music goes so hard

I cut up some headphone cables to make a double 3.5mm jack and plugged it into my tape recorder thinking I could somehow make music, it never worked. THis game (and a few Amiga games) is probably why I got so heavily into the techno/rave scene as a teenage/adult back in the 90's. Best soundtracks ever.
It can only be obtained in two player mode. When Mr X gives you a chance to join the syndicate, one player must choose ‘YES’ and the other must choose ‘NO’. If the player who chose ‘YES’ defeats the other player who chose ‘NO’ you can fight Mr X as you would do normally. However, after defeating Mr X, your character takes his place, and you get this bad ending.
@@sonjawusky8613 wrong, mr. it can also happen with a single player. when you choose to become Mr. X's right hand, you choose yes, and you get back 2 stages. then you'll have to do aaalll that thing again, beat the punks up, meet the Mr. X again and finally fight him. if you win, you become the boss of the junkers, and this theme plays
@@ruanrocharbr Nope I did that multiple times and never got the bad ending. You HAVE to do it in 2 player mode. The thing is, you can do it alone and "carry" the 2nd player by using the stage select code to start you at Round 7 (elevator stage). When the stage is almost done (before you kill the last enemies), summon the 2nd player before that stage ends since 2nd player can't join during Round 8. Then keep them alive (not that hard, you can throw them at enemies too) and have them say No while you as 1st player say Yes and kill them and Mr. X. I did it once to get the Retro Achievements achievement they had for the bad ending that ended up getting demoted. You can even give yourself more lives before starting at Round 7.
