This show is underrated honestly- it gets even better! No weak seasons and it finishes strong. The cinematography is amazing and so is the sound design
I felt that laptop scene was more like “you spent way too much money on a present for me when we just hooked up please get your money back” than her telling him to pay the rent
@@goonboon878Not at all. There was a behind the scenes interview where Bill Hader talks about how the scene was originally written, then one of the women on the writing team I think pointed out that it was actually a weird af move and that Sally should not react positively to it. Idk why people are so hung up on the rent thing. That’s just her pointing out what an absurdly expensive gift it is for someone you hooked up with once.
Not exactly, her point was "how dare you buy me something 3x worth my rent? Are you saying I can't buy my own gifts?" That's how I saw it at least, she's not one to care about anyone other than herself after all.
@@SilverYPheonixno, she brought up the rent thing because it’s incredibly strange and off-putting to present someone you just hooked up with once and don’t otherwise know very well with an expensive gift, it comes off as manipulative and attempting to buy her affections, and she just had a separate experience that same day with a man requesting sexual favors in exchange for giving her something she needed.
@@thecrackswordsman These seem more like personal associations to me. Doing that can come across as that as you've said, but it was obvious he was not asking anything out of her in these few episodes. The character is playing the lovable goof to a T and that's why it's frustrating seeing two characters who are so bad at self-reflection fighting like this.
@@SilverYPheonix Except Bill Hader himself has said in an interview that was the intent. He used a personal experience where he went overboard with a gift as a basis as well as talked with the women in the writer's room and they all agreed it would be a weird gift. He even said that Barry has a middle school level sophistication when it comes to relationships.
@@Mortal_Disorder Well the middle school level romance understanding I can see, but the other thing just doesn't fit much with Sally's character for me, she just seems pathologically out of touch. Also, having a writer give their own intention to stories or scenes they made is good for a general feel but I wouldn't take it as bible's godwritten word, the whole point of stories is interpreting accurately the writer's intention but most importantly the character's core drive.
Really?? That interesting perspective, I thought Barry was trying to be thoughtful and kind. But some folks interpret it differently, I guess. To each their own.
I don't like Sally as a person for a lot of this show, but in this episode she was 100% right. They weren't even dating and Barry gave her expensive gifts and then became way too possessive when she was talking to another guy. She's a red flag and he's even a bigger red flag.
She was not 100% right lmao Barry was very wrong but that was due to naivety primarily. In fact, Sally was participating in one of the very things she accused Barry of doing herself. She never heard his thoughts, never asked for permission and always told him what to do as if his very purpose was to satisfy her every need. This is a show of hypocritical and self-absorbed dumbasses, and very rarely there's a 'one' person who's on the right in the entire storyline.
Roshi has some kinda vendetta against fancy restaurants or something. Like a Maître d’ killed his parents. 😂 “Fancy restaurant dry ass rotisserie chicken.” Bro, it’s chicken à la king, chicken in a cream sauce made with onions, mushrooms, sherry, and sometimes pimientos. It’s known for being flavorful and decadent. Know anything about broader culinary culture before talking shit. I know he’s got an abiding love for Jamaican cuisine, and I love curried goat and ackee fruit and salt fish as much as the next guy, but there’s worthy food outside that little bubble too.
The fucking kick in the nuts of these characters in this episode man. This was the moment Barry should've just opened his head and move on to better things, Sally being the most 0 self-awareness character telling my guy he was the one guilty of doing all these things to her, when he is the one never being treated like a person and always being told what to do, Sally being one of the people who actively does the very same thing.
Honestly, I think Sally is in the right for being weirded out by Barry's gift. Outside of the fact that she opened up to him at a low point and hooked up, they're still strangers. While the thoughts and intentions are nice from Barry, from her perspective, he is kind of putting her in a spot where she can't say no. Like either she accepts the gift, but now emotionally feels debted to him, or she rejects the gift, hurting Barry and maybe their relationship and making her feel like the asshole. Barry's heart was in the right place, but the gift was too much too fast. Added: Also, she was just put in a spot where the agent suggested she give him sex in return for an acting career, taking advantage of her willingness to make it at acting.
I've seen so many people debate over his gift of a laptop to her. I've seen so many people be saying "I wish someone would buy me a new laptop" while other people say "Nah that is creepy"
00:12:12 My sibling is in the military. He was cracking up so hard when he saw the scene where Barry and his marine buddies are using "fuck" 40 times in a sentence. That was a part of the joke I otherwise would never have gotten
lmao yes, she wanted him to take it back to the store. also barry and fuches were working together and everything was fine until barry ruined it and fuches had to pay. so yes, he kinda is obligated to do something.
She wasn't saying he should have paid her rent instead-that probably would have freaked her out even more honestly. She just came out of a situation where her manager was saying "hey i've been doing you a huge favor representing you under the table, and if you want me to represent you for real, you'd better...." and so to have barry come up like "hey i'm doing you a huge favor after we just had sex :) :) :)" is like. Huge huge huge red flags
@@thecrackswordsmanyeah I can, lil bro 🤣 but how tf is that creepy??? I haven’t watched the show in awhile and some parts might be cut out from their reaction, but was Barry tryna get something in return? If he was, then yeah ig that’s kind weird. But what I GOT from that scene was just him tryna be nice. Barry is extremely socially awkward in the first two seasons (from what I remember) so it’s pretty obvious that there wasn’t any weird expectations coming with that gift at all.
@@Yuh_zhimmy buying someone you barely know an expensive gift is creepy, it betrays a massive lack of grasp on basic social cues and barry’s warped mind actually thought that buying her a laptop after one night together was the first step in getting her to be his girlfriend and eventually marry him. shit he already assumes she’s his girlfriend just because they slept together, bro is not all there
Completely different shows but both of them are in my top ten all time. This has heartbreaking moments and dark comedy meanwhile always sunny is the funniest thing in the world. BIT I SECOND ALWAYS SUNNY!
Why y’all so down on sally. She’s often a prick, but judge the actions case by case. She was 100% right about the laptop, and about him calling her ‘his girl’. If you hook up with someone once, then they jump to buying you a laptop that’s expensive enough to cover three months of your rent… that sets up a weird dynamic where **you would feel in debt to them**. It’s simply too much money relative to how much you have. Barry’s intentions in this case are mostly fine. But sally can’t read his mind. She just had her almost-agent say “if you have sex with me, I’ll give you work (money), and if you don’t have sex with me I’ll take it away”. From Sally’s perspective, it makes sense to think Barry’s ‘gift’ after having sex once comes with similar strings attached That, and the second part, where Barry calls her ‘his girl’, when they haven’t discussed their relationship at all. Yes, Barry doesn’t get things, but sally doesn’t know his issues and expects from him the basic thought one expects from any adult. The extent to which Barry is stupid Vs sociopathic is debatable. Who deserves more slack here, an asshole or a literal multi-murderer?
Honestly I can't be that mad at Sally for getting creeped out by Barry. Like she's pretty annoying overall, but she called this guy over for a one-night stand, and the next day he's bringing expensive gifts and telling other people you're committed? And after feeling used by her "agent" I think the last thing she wants is for another man to feel entitled to her

most fans of the show dont tbh, which is a shame bc sally is a great character that's both touching and funny. Other male characters dont get half the shit she does, she can do horrible things and be pretty shitty to people, but her writing makes sense and still gives you place to empathize with her (ig asking the general public to empathize with a complex female character is still too much to ask for in 2024)
8:34 nah, like, Sally's a jerk, but I don't blame her for being weirded out here, she's known Barry for less than a week, they've slept together once, and now he's coming around with ridiculously extravagant gifts. I'd feel weird about it too, like, is this dude trying to buy me or something? If I accept this laptop, is he going to act entitled later on? etc. We're seeing it from Barry's pov so we know he doesn't have any ulterior motives and has (comparatively) oodles of cash laying around from his criminal activities and nothing to spend it on but she's not a psychic, how's she supposed to know his intentions?
