He didn’t explain why he doesn’t like it at all. Studio one has macros aka custom actions. He seems like more of a tinkerer than a music producer or serious mixer.

It was basically the same for me with Reaper: at first I did find it a bit confusing, but with time I found that it could do everything the other DAW's can, plus a little more.

3:55 macOS is actually based on a Un*x-flavour (FreeBSD with a modified kernel, called Mach). Because of this they share a lot of commonalities with Linux and other Posix compliant systems. Anyway... the other possible DAW that exists for Linux is Bitwig (or Renoise, but that is more like a tracker [which I love]).

This needs a 2019 update! Logic Pro X is my main DAW but I recently added Studio One 4.5 to my arsenal and it is MUCH more than what you give credit for. The Sampler alone is one of the best ive ever used. The mastering plugins are very efficient and powerful. In fact, as it stands right now, The one two punch of LPX and ST1 4.5 is a match made in heaven! They compliment each other very well! Personally, ive had it with Avid! I noticed many Pro Tools users seem to be jumping to Studio One, in fact, this is why I looked into it! The reviews on the Presonus DAW are steadily positive. It was a little over a year ago when this video was posted and A LOT has changed since then for several DAWs… It would be nice to see an up to date retake of this topic. How much longer can Pro Tools hold onto a title they no longer live up too! Logic Pro X is now the most powerful DAW in the industry by a mile with the 10.4.5 update.

@@realmusic4you you only hear this kind of stuff from two kids of people: the ones who haven't tried REAPER, and the ones who weren't smart or patient enough to take a few minutes to learn how to make it the custom work horse it is designed to be. It's the only DAW that lets you put everything you need an do at your fingertips and get everything else out of the way. I've been using different DAWs since ProTools was the only one, then Cubase, Cakewalk and Logic came along, but didn't even have version numbers yet. There's nothing like REAPER, not only in the world of DAWs, but in all of software. I've done graphic design, video production and music since the 90s, and I wish there had been a REAPER in all of those fields. I could have tripled my income. You don't learn REAPER so much as you teach it to work for you. It's a complete paradigm shift. Some people just aren't ready to live free.

I have been using Studio One since version 2 and still have it on my main DAW in my commercial studio. 4.5 is a disaster for me. They took away the highlight feature for grouped tracks in in the Track View (not on the timeline) and now the Input Level on the tracks disappears when the track is in record mode..unless you have the monitor on and then the monitor function only comes down the outputs. And the fonts have gotten so small that one my large desktops systems its annoying, but on the mobile rig that is laptrop driven its next to impossible to read. Terrible update. Looks like Presonus is now catering more to the beat makers than the serious recording studios.

I just love to see all the people confirming what I've discovered with REAPER. I have to admit, I originally started using it for the price. I had used everything at one point or another, was currently using Logic, but was getting into voice over, and it was too clunky and I was broke because of health issues. When I wrote Cockos and told them that I was intending on using REAPER for charity and explained by situation, they sent me a key! I was blown away. Then, I started to get to know REAPER. And, wow! What an amazing thing it is. I find myself wishing that Cockos would write software for everything now. Browsers, graphic design, word processors, everything. I think that every software developer should have to intern at Cockos before they're allowed to release code for sale. It's not just the best DAW, it's the model that all software should follow.

Reaper is just hard to learn. If you love to tinker, or have a programmer’s mind, it is perfect. If I enjoyed configuring my DAW as much as I like playing with sound, it would rank higher for me.
That said, for single source recording and edits for quick turnaround, nothing works faster.

For awhile after seeing your videos on other DAWs, I started to second guess how much of a fit Ableton Live would be for you, but now Im starting to second guess that second guessing, hahaha. Especially after your talked about Logic, because a lot of people I know that use it, have switched to Live. So Im still excited for you to try it and I cant wait to see the results.

    • @Rhythmattica
      @Rhythmattica 5 років тому

Its different for all.. Depends what you want to achieve , and how you get there.
Most Logic users I know, have and always will be. Live cant do what they need to do... I also imagine the instant gratification Live gives you (in some sense) is why people love it.
Well , fact is, there is competition.. competition in sales... user base...
But for me , there is no competition. Logic .
Started with Pro24, then onto Cubase 1 & 2 on Atari Mega 4, Cubase VST PC, 5VST Mac, SX, SX2.... Logic 6.. Been there since.
PT for Post... Ableton for fun and Live.....

I've noticed a lot of freelancers work with Reaper, but hardly any studios have it. Studios still want to use mainly Pro Tools and Logic Pro. Some others use FL studio and Ableton Live. Then there are a few that prefer Cubebase, Sonar, and Reason.

Ardour can't work for most people because it doesn't have delay compensation on utility busses, which makes it useless for most of us. I hear there's a git that was released that Harrison Mixbus is incorporating into a future update which does put delay compensation on utility busses, so we're not going to be limited to just the 8 or 12 mix busses that do have PDC.

  • @simonbjr18

Yes! It's a great journey to try out which DAW is the best for you and your projects.
I was on the same path few months ago.
I started with Sony Acid 7 (I mean Sonicfoundry Acid Pro 4 back then) (bummer) then I bought Pro Tools 9 four years ago.
Then I sold them because the workflow and the bugs (most cases in Acid) was very annoying.
Out of date features, not compatible with many plugins... etc.
Sony never gived a f*ck for answering our requests. They sold the whole licence to Magix.
I tried Cubase, Sonar, and S1.
In my case the best choice was Studio One.
I make music in the box, and few times tracking vocals, and guitars, and mastering.
I found it very stable, and very inspiring, and I have to say, really love the workflow.
It's fast, everythings is under my hands, drag and drop style which is awesome, the stock plugins are very useable, and it handles the 3rd party vst-s and vsti-s correctly. So I stayed with S1. I really hope Presonus won't give up developing S1.
Big thumbs up to your channel.
I wish you the best and keep up the good work!
    Simon B.

If Reaper had the Studio One Appearance i think there would be no contest; I've used both but kept Reaper even though it doesn't look as sexy. But I can fix that. In comparison, Studio One is how many times more expensive than reaper, even Reaper commercial and yet - and yet, Reaper kicks it's ass! Even from the trial version - which is complete with NO restrictions, I must say I only miss Studio One's VST library the most that was awesome for an in-house set up; apart from that no crashes now, before with Studio One it was like being with a drunk on the highway.

Nice similar journey to mine: came from Cubase (fed up with performance, didn't want to upgrade and hated the dongle), tried Studio One (visually the most pleasing DAW ever) but found it to be too limited for me, but decided to keep an eye on future versions. Have been using studio one for years. V4 brings aaf export and better i/o for hardware. The only limit i know of is missing surround mixing and no sandboxing for third party plugins, which is a big one. Soundtoys and softube is behaving poorly in s1 and isnt even a supported daw even thought their support forums have been complaining for years... Would love to know what you think about it and why you dont like it?!
For me there is no other daw i like to use. Stable as hell, except the above mentioned plugins, and super fast. Love tracking with plugins and low latency. Love the drag and drop and flexible routing. Reaper otoh is a mess of settings and ugly design flaws making me feel like im in windows..

I guess we could go down a really endless debate here! I'll just express what i think from my experience: I've been working on pro tools for about 10 years now and after 2 weeks using S1 I've come to the conclusion that it is far more stable, responsive and easy to use (maybe a bit too much). There's a bunch of features I do dislike (or miss from PT) but overall I'm objectively enjoying it. I would have to give S1 a try on some professional film post production for features/docs/shorts (wonder if any of you guys out there have) which is my main field of work were I do feel comfortable inside PT and have managed to handle and finish some big projects in the past (Timecode, framerates, sync, codecs, surround layouts, etc) Other than that, for music mixing, tracking and mastering S1 has been a pretty enjoyable & productive time.

I originally used DP as a front end to a ProTools system, then just gave up on Pro Tools because DP had so much more going for it, and other hardware was much better than what Digi/Avid put out (I use Metric Halo hardware). Reaper is a more than capable DAW and would be a great choice for someone who is more mixing focused, but Logic is great for Production with it's plethora of Virtual instruments. Avid just Sucks I have a HDX2 system that hasn't been turned on in 2 years unless a client rents the studio and uses it. Ardour is the engine for many other DAW's Harrison Mixbus & Waves Tracks Live (Live Audio Recorder). Ardour is a very interesting DAW with Pre & Post fader plugins like Cubase but it has the same problem most open source software does it has no Marketing. The background of Mac is 100% NOT Linux it is BSD/Unix the Darwin Kernel and Unix operating system of Apple's OSX/MacOS, Mobile iOS, and variants are not in anyway affiliated with Linux. Despite Linux being a variant replacement for Unix as a cheaper cost efficient variant. Think of Linux as a cover version of the original song Unix but with it's own melody and new lyrics.

The default interface is pretty boring. Just customize it, then it is the most beautiful.

Studio One is cool..but there are limitation..its limiter is a bit sh*t ..routing is a bit limited too for example if you want to do parrallel compression

Definitely need to learn Pro Tools, but I crack up when people think Logic is basic and then I see videos where other DAW’s have updates for things that Logic has had for years.

Pro Tools: is it like Quark of the 90's? Back then for graphics design Quark software was like Microsoft. But now Quark is almost unknown. Pro Tools wouldn't be the first juggernaut of an industry to evaporate.

I was in graphic design when InDesign first came out, and it was the Quark killer. I tried to tell everyone, and I converted several companies to InDesign, but the first version of InDesign was at least as good as Quark, and by v.2, it killed it. It was funny because I was friends with the CEO of Quark, and they kept trying to woo me to keep it on the desktop in the departments I was running. No one believed me when I told them InDesign was going to make Quark obsolete. Just like they didn't believe me when, after years of supporting the crappy Mac OS, OS X Public Beta came out, and I told everyone that Apple was going to become the hugest company ever because you could see the foundation for what they did in the music, entertainment, and computing industries. Now, I'm telling everyone to get to know REAPER. ProTools is officially killed. Nothing will even touch REAPER in two year. Nothing does now, but you'll be hard pressed to find a studio that doesn't use it, so learn it now so you can stay competitive. Otherwise, you're gonna be behind the curve.

ProTools core is made for RECORDINGS especifically then mixing and playback part when not recordings actually suck i understand, but try recording 24 tracks with other DAW they will crash the buffer, so PRO TOOLS for RECORDING!!!!! is a must!!! then go to other DAWs for everything else!

    What about the FL Studio?
I'm very new with home studio recording in general. I'm using FL Studio but it seams it is not seriously treated DAW by sound engineers. Why ? Does this program is so 'amateur stuf' that even not compairble with the other popular DAW?

Reaper is no beauty, but a powerful beast and I think in plugin world it’s counterpart is Meldaproduction. These both are hell of options and sometimes too much. For me these both are the future of audio production.
And there is a linux version of Reaper on their pre versions site.
Meldaproduction is also working on a mixing thing revolution for two years, but still not ready for release. I don’t know much about it, but I have a feeling this could really change the way of mixing. Not this pseudo products like Neutron. But we will see!
