I get why the comments are divided on the value of this mod - the "new" mic is completely different in sound. Which is kind of the point of doing these mods in the first place. Really looking forward to this series.
Sounds way better than the CM25 - really good sounding, but the plosive rejection is awful, though it shouldn't be an issue if you have a proper mic technique!
Just wanted to post an update on this capsule, i added a 1uf capacitor to act as a high pass filter between the preamp and the dac and it seem to have solved the problem of the overly bassy sound, now the sound is more balanced
COOL!-Hello,are you using 48volts phantom power for this (32mm?) upgrade.I have All ready done the 25mm upgrade to my Neewer BowelMovement800 into a outboard ham radio eq that has 12volts that power the unit I am just guessing that it is also 12 volts at the 3.5mm input..Neewer mic is xlr to 3.5mm cable into unit.Neewer mic sounded much better with out phantom power48volts with the 25mm capsule.I have ordered a ebay$12 >34mm< capsule that I plan to upgrade.I am guessing It wont require 48v phtm pwr but I have also installed a mini xlr chassis mount on eq unit to accomodate a MXL 990.So if it dose need more I'm all set and if it sounds distorted I'll know .This video that you made is very very helpful.Oh,try small daba flux on the capsule connections also for quicker reveal with iron on lowest heat. Fini THE END.. : )
@@ObscureMics Great ,very good to know now.,thank you so much for the quick responce..Now I just have to be patient while the new capsule is crossing the pacific ocean, get inspected, shiped from west coast to my little cow town in the middle...Oh if your iron dose not have temp controll and you feel it is to hot ,unplug 4 a moment it'L cool off enough if you think your going to damage red wire connection on a capsule diaphragm.

Sounds really nice to me. It IS a bass-y boi, but it's much fuller sounding than the original. And I would always rather have the low end available, and EQ it out when I don't need it. So I'm really liking these capsules.
I did not notice a lot of difference honestly....as far as self noise goes. As far as sensitivity, the JLI definitely picked up more ambient noise, but it was nothing major
i have a cheap fifine mic i paid $8 second hand and i was considering upgrading the capsule to the one diy perks used in his video. the thing is the microphone has circuit has an integrated adc and usb controller and i don't really know how much i will gain in terms of sound quality before i decide to buy a decent audio interface and order a custom pcb and components for a new pre-amp circuit
@@ObscureMics the capsule is contained in a separate cylindrical chamber and surrounded by a steel mesh (fifine k056). i could also try to add different tipes of foam to dampen certain frequency ranges. i don't plan to use it for professional applications. it seems to be a nice project to tackle
What about taking an Elvis / Retro / Shure 55 typ microphone and adding a condenser capsule (something more sensitive then the dynamic capsule it comes with) so that you can keep a wider distance and still look good on video recordings. PS bonus points for making it a stereo microphone or something like a mid/side style three capsule thingy PPS got another idea for you, but let's first see what you can do with this
@@ObscureMics well sound is everything, but I'm not much for modding electret circuitry. I'd rather just spring for a Behringer B1 or TM1 to get a full condenser mic.
got the same capsule before watching your video couple weeks ago, i'm so disappointed by the results especially considering i spent around $40 on it including shipping cost! the sound is bassy and muddy, and after doing a rudimentary frequency response test, the results confirmed it the cap is completely unbalanced and its frequency response is basically a slope with over represented lows, muddy mids, and nonexistent highs i do not advise this capsule to anyone!

Sounds really solid with the new capsule! Definitely worth the extra $20-30 if you have a cheap donor mic.
I'm definitely going to throw the capsule in some others

Yep 48v... Thiugh a lesser amount will do... I have a mixer that supplies 12v and it works well

This sounds great! Sooo, I have been thinking. Can you put an SM7B/SM57/58 Capsule in the Q9U and make a USB-SM7B?
Ooooooo that's a very interesting idea

Doing good with the finger work - on the foam
Lol nice pause there Dale

Sounds pretty good to me. The proximity effect was pretty intense. 😃
It was lol. I'd like to take a LITTLE of the low end away. Like an 80hz low cut
You killed all the top end with foam
That's what I was going for 😊

In my experience...changing capsules in a cheap USB mic is not worth the time, as the internals shape it to be almost the same as original capsule

Dang..... And I just so happen to have a mic that fits the description
somebody needs to make quick connects like how blue does so my mic can be 10 mics for a couple hundred in capsules
Agree 100%
have you ever tried to put a large capsule on a dynamic microphone?

@@ObscureMics I get it, I'm a dozen unfinished projects behind myself.
Is it advisable to upgrade the 16mm capsule in my Maono AU-A04 microphone to a 22mm capsule?
I'd say it's worth a shot for sure
its worth to get neewer nw-700 and replace only capsule?

If you already have the neewer.....absolutely get the capsule

Nope. It should fit
