I never felt like I had any trouble watching the original blu ray, but I'm still excited to see this again with all the 4k upgrades!

Same here. Yeah, it was a dark and muted image that could have been brighter, but when the TV is properly set up it is still possible to see everything. A spot on Contrast (Black Point) setting is key, though, otherwise you are going to have black crush and you are going to lose all the details in those very dark scenes. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem is a different matter though. The black crush is already baked in the image there. It has the worst color grading I've ever seen in any movie, which is weird, because in the trailers the image brightness was fine.

God FINALLY!!!!! I remember in the theatres that you could see everything but then when the Bluray came out you could literally see nothing. I was so shocked cos I remember never having that experience in the theatre. I'm definately getting this!

With movies delayed that should have been addressed and time to fix between theater and media release still had time re fix but nope you need spend your $ 3 times i guess thats wb for ya

@@rustymixer2886 panasonic, sony, LG....they all make 4k players in a variety of price ranges. There are others also.

Yeah they did something to the Blu-ray that just wrecked the image. The theatrical release was better.

Really... Even if the the blu ray was a little tad darker on a properly calibrated display it still looked perfectly fine. In fact it was a great looking blu ray in its own right.
Learn to spell Blu-ray. There is only one spelling. If you can't handle that then use the initialism of BD. Adieu.
In HBO Max and Vudu uses the theatrical version instead of the blu ray rendering
I want to believe you about the Grey Filter being removed, but all of the images you showed as “examples” were promo images, not actual screencaps from the movie.
Just watched through my copy, and i can confirm. I watched it in a bright room and everything is much clearer.
@@ntmetroid Did you watch it on an Xbox One? Because I have heard that fixes the transfer issue.
Because I ripped the file and the issue is still there, albiet the HDR helps.
@@braydenn-mexe i have a Sony 4K player that I got maybe 5 years ago, and it looked great. Also popped it in my ps5, and it also looks good there
PITIFULLY. everything is still just as dark. The only way to see anything would be to have a top-of-the-line $3,000 TV. If you have it, you won't have any problems. There is not such a drastic difference as announced on twitter. The promotion is very misleading.

The color grading is so much better, I just got the movie early from best buy. Looks great!! Been waiting for this since I got a 4k TV.

Zillas back plate design was the best in this one. But all the hardcore fans had to complain so they changed it in king of the monsters
fax. The new theme was also awesome but they had to go back to the old theme

Is the regular Bluray (not 4K) the same as before, or is it new with the new color grade?
Just got it today. I don't know if it's my tv or something, but I swear the night time scenes are darker than the blu-ray, for me. The day time scenes are noticably brighter (that Golden Gate Bridge scene..) and there isn't any grey filter over it anymore, but during the night time scenes I can barely see anything.....Not sure what's going on.....
Is the Blu-ray the same as the first release or has it been remastered too?

I'd dig a review of the new 4K release of Batman v Superman with the remaster since we haven't had too many 4K double dips yet.

@@chrissexton4129 It’s on Amazon, but it’s sold out. Sales were much higher than WB anticipated, so even if you preordered weeks ago, you’ll have to wait a month or two to get your hands on a copy. You can still order it though

@@chrissexton4129 I feel the same way. Some people might be upset that they have to wait so long to get it, but I’m just excited that a physical rerelease of a film that’s only a few years old could be this successful
I remember watching the blu-ray and thinking that I was so sure that it was brighter in the theater cut. I don't know what the hell happened there in the transition to physical.
Just curious does the color correction carry over to the standard Blu-Ray that comes with the 4K copy?
Movies look better on old fashioned televisions. The colors look better on old televisions. Colors look faded on flat screen televisions.

Very glad to hear that the darkness issue is cleaned up! I never bought the Blu-ray due to all the complaints I've seen, so I was excited to hear that this release was coming. I saw some mixed reviews on a Godzilla forum of which I'm a member, but Godzilla fans (like any fans) will squabble and gripe about anything. You seem like a knowledgeable neutral party, so I'll take your word for it and grab this disk soon. Thanks!

Man I hated the 1080p blu ray of this movie. I watched this film when it first came out in the theatre and the home video release did it such a disservice... Relied on fan made colour corrected versions on the internet but now I hope to get this.

Because it was a black screen for 2 hours with 3 minutes of godzilla. Better than 1998 version though.

I didn’t get much from the heights in the main action scenes. Hardly reference. KotM was reference worthy for sure.
Really, I thought they hit well. KOTM is better and has more action, so maybe it’s more noticeable
awesome. night shots can work super well, personally i feel nighttime for a movie like this is more exciting for a finale as long as there is good contrast, lighting and it is visible. looks like it was lit well but the transfer they went with in 2014 messed it up.

Bit late to the game but I just acquired mine. Watching via PS5 and its still dark, darker than I remember my blu ray being.
The promo images are not the same as the actual disc. I personally don’t mind it being dark and it’s better than the original Blu-ray but it does NOT look like the screen capture they tweeted.
Very glad to hear the lighting was fixed, and I'm pumped pumped Atmos. Can't wait for my copy to arrive.

That's what I didn't like about the 2014 film, most action scenes were dark, and Godzilla didn't have that much screentime. Glad they changed that in KOTM, and looks like they improved more in GVK

I saw this at target and was going to get it but I'm pretty sure they will release a collection of all 3 monsterverse movies in one pack after Godzilla vs kong. And also Godzilla 2014 is pretty lackluster
It’s actually an excellent transfer, and adds to the movie. I too was skeptical, but I was blown away! The Dolby Atmos is incredible!
I saw this in Imax 3d and only ever watch the 3d blu ray. Never noticed a brightness issue at home on TV or projector with that disc, but glad to hear the 2d has seen some further post work.
Great to hear! I thought it was just me the first time I saw this years ago. We only had a 42in LCD at the time and it was so dark, I did not like the movie. Now we have a 65in 4k, will look at getting the 4k upgrade.

Hey Jeff great video, I’ve had a question that I’ve found a lot of mixed answers about and I’m wondering if you can answer it. I know in order to play a 4K disc you need a 4K player but can you also play blu ray discs on a 4K player?
And also if you play a blu ray disc on a 4K tv does it look better upscaled than on a regular hd tv

I hate the Blu Ray because I literally can’t see anything. That alone sets the 4K version above the Blu Ray.
Yo, don't confuse yourself. It is not upscaled to Dolby Atmos. It was truly done in Atmos, but wasn't released then.
The question is: does the bluray included with the 4K release have the colour correction too?

As I bought this movie on 3d bluray, and loved it so i was wondering if it'd be worth upgrading. Happy to hear about the fixes they were bringing to 4k Uhd, especially Atmos. Rip 3d though.
You can fix the color but it took yesterday's release of Godzilla VS Kong to fix the travesty of the 2014 Movie.
Is the 1080p Blu-ray included in this set the remastered version or the old version? I’m sure HDR does a lot of heavy lifting on the 4K, but is there any change to the 1080p version? My 4K TV doesn’t have HDR, so unfortunately the UHD discs are pretty useless on it.
Totally unrelated, my shower curtain is a Godzilla version of that Japanese painting of the wave, so it’s funny you mentioned that, lol.
Do the digital 4K movies on platforms like Vudu also get the same upgrade? Or are digital and physical copies separate versions?

I never noticed it being too dark, especially on my Blu-ray.
This is unrelated, but I wish they would’ve let Godzilla 2014’s design alone in the sequels. 2014 was cool looking because his spines didn’t look like every other incarnation. I prefer the spike-like spines over the typical ones in KOTM.
Have my Best Buy Steelbook on the way, looking forward to it. The night scenes is what I wanted to see how that was improved.
I was hoping this would be released on 4K. I have the second film on 4K Blu Ray and I'll be buying this on 4K too.
So does anyone know if the iTunes 4K digital version features this updates color grade? It has the same updated cover art as that physical 4K copy so I’m wondering if it shares the same specs.
I never really had any issues seeing the movie in theaters of on the Blu Ray. But either way, this is a day one pickup for me.
Just curious, do you have plans to review the remastered Batman V Superman thats coming out tuesday with colors fixed and different aspect ratio? Don't get me wrong Godzilla review & Ten commandments are waaaaay more important. But i felt like this remaster has been so quiet most people don't even know it exists and when they hear about it they aren't quite sure what's different about it. It'd definitely be interesting to see if you think it's worth it over the already released 4k. Just food for thought.

This was the same problem with the lord of the rings blu rays and the new 4Ks fixed it

Hey Jeff! Love your content and this review. I bought this based on your recommendation. However, I just watched it and to me, it seems darker than the blu ray. I have the TCL 6-series 2020 model and I had it all the way tuned up and it just seems darker to me. With that being said, the colors and spectral highlights definitely pop more on the 4K.
