In the crowd, you may have people who want to enjoy their day off after a good week of work, and it is interrupted. The people do not have to accept that.
I am not in any way agreeing with what they do, but bringing a city to a standdstill to express an opinion is something that in a specific case like for example in France revolution was necessary and ultimately good. True story: an overseas friend of mine missed out on an important meeting because of roadblocks, and then recognized a neighbor several streets away. He talked to other people, one thing led to another and in the end they had an industrial container placed right in front of the protesters house, effectively blocking his frontdoor. You could still get in if you squeezed through, but that was about it. Lo and behold: all of a sudden it was all "different". Blocking other people and preventing them to get home or go to work is one thing, but blocking _him_ from entering his home was an outrage! Hypocrisy ruled supreme. The police were called, the neighbors said that "mistakes" were made but as soon as the police realized that this was one of those road blockers they stopped caring: "as long as this conflict gets resolved by tomorrow, DON'T make us come back, ok?". The neighbor became the laughing stock of the neighborhoor: "Mr. hypocrite".

Here in Northern Nevada we had a group of these Morons block the road to the Burning Man event. The police arrested all of them and their names were published in our local paper. It turned out that zero of these Morons came from Nevada. So unless they came via horse, they all used oil to stage a protest against using oil. Total hypocrites.
This is the kind of lazy argument I made when I was 18 and edgy. They aren't trying to get single people to change but instead the system. I used to teach environmental science and ecology in a natural resources management program. As far as I know, I never had a single environmental activist show up to take one of my classes. Activists don't want to be informed because information just gets in the way of their dogma. They also are lazy and can't be bothered to do the hard work it takes to assess and preserve wildlife habitat while also working to produce the sustainable resources needed for humanity to survive at our current population level. While the "environmental activists" in my area were firebombing car dealerships, chaining themselves to things, and spiking trees trying to kill loggers, my students were out fighting wildfires, surveying and working to improve stream habitat, re-planting wetlands and forests, and raising and stocking native fish.
The funny thing is that most enviormentalists don't care about nature. They are just told that it is important. If made to life in the past they worship, they'd probably loose their minds, protesting in other things like self-preservational human instinct until they ultimately are whipped out. Even cavemen had a level of technology, it is what made humanity advance. The planet has been trough thousands of cataclysms before us, I don't we're that much of a hindrance towards a self-repearing organism that had blind luck to even be what it is nowadays

I've worked security at a number of protests over the years. I've met some really nice ppl, and also the absolute dregs of society. It takes all types. BUT. There is a way of protesting properly.
