yeah, the fact the Kaspersky was able to uninstall and install software onto my machine without my consent angered me. Not to mention, I had already canceled my renewal subscription with them a couple of weeks prior and they still gave my billing info to Pango. I was like "oh, hell no!" I regret now, sticking up for Kaspersky during this geopolitical ordeal.

      Any software can do this.
FiveM, a GTA5 multiplayer modification for the game has swapped out their executable for a Win3.1 version of paint multiple times for an April fool's joke because the people who run it thought it was funny.
Kaspersky has just down the exact same thing, but at a bigger scale.

Everyone will, eventually, cooperate with authorities when they (the apps) get this big and will not want to be banned and pulled off internet and app stores. This is the future, folks. Freedoms of one end where freedoms of others begin. Victims of crimes and potential victims to not become victims also have freedoms, and I grant them their freedoms to live and thrive over some folks illegal drugs purchase, or worse. If you want to have some national security and justice working, you must allow responsible agencies to access communication channels, or you will have anarchy here.
To avoid governments going the Kim's or Pootin's way, educate yourself and vote better. Not Trump. Not Felon Musk and alikes.

Listening to your podcast and hearing that a commenter of yours was concerned about the future does not really surprise me and in many ways I can relate to that position that I also shared a few years ago. But I wanted to explain a conclusion that was not really obvious a few years back but really in the last year at least my old thoughts on a future active surveillance system is not compatible with truly exceptional machine learning unless there is a mechanism to learn from key experiences that humans share with each other and the continuation of those experiences at least and the expansion of such and the mechanism of exploration of key human experiences with each other.
For some background there is a pair of stories written by an English writer in the last century that expected a complete erosion of the human experience, a reduction of available language so that only the parties thoughts could ever percolate up through societies. That if you kept a diary that this act would lead to forced re-education to the party orientation. This bleak view was written with no understanding of our current time and the participation that humanity will have with different forms of Artificial intelligence and in many ways especially large language models that if anything would greatly suffer with a reduction of language and can only truly be exceptional with exceptional data. Whilst I do not expect to end surveillance I believe that the way we perceive surveillance can change for our benefit and for security purposes.
Whilst some have proposed that humans will be replaced in economical situations by machines there is a determination amongst people to work or add value to our societies. Just this morning I heard a statistic about uptake of employment after the pandemic which for all sense and purposes is a solid measurement towards the desire to go out and get involved in society. For this reason although surveillance capitalism is not going away to sustain participation the dynamic will change because if not surveillance will be it's own undoing. The reality is humans have a desire for meaningful connection and machine learning is a net beneficiary of such interactions along with so many other viable industries that have so much to gain from a free society and not a lot to gain from a society of depression or thralldom.
So we have a situation where we are deserving of a right to a private life but we also would be advantaged ourselves if there were a mechanism for compensation of the key experiences we choose to share and can go towards a portfolio of personal, social and industrial interactions that become a net benefit for the whole global civilisation that pay each individual based on a use case scenario that would also drive meritocracy. Free society's are less reluctant to rebel or revolt, they are proven to be far more participatory, fairer or more just and by looking at migration statistics alone they are where people would like to migrate towards.
The other really interesting idea is that if a machine learning system can replace all jobs then why can that same system not be used to allocate production of all sorts of components out to individuals meaning that any person with any experience or determination can be given a way of building a small or even larger business to supply the components needed by society for growth, maintenance or even because those things are the right things to build even when they may not directly be growth orientated like building parks and recreational areas for children and adults. Whilst building such components contributing to the conscious data and knowledge creation that would deeply reform societies purpose.
These were just a few ideas on how an engaging future may transpire if we are willing to build that direction and that is not even mentioning all the possibilities that become possibilities within digital or outer space.
So with the right ideas we can build a future that people can look forward to and that has real world tangible meaningful and economic value.
