Iam Tongi Makes The Judges Cry With "Monsters" And His Emotional Story - American Idol 2023
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 лют 2023
- This one’s a tearjerker! Iam lost his dad, Rodney, just a few months ago and says he can still hear him harmonizing with him on every song he sings. Rodney taught Iam music from a very young age and always wanted his son to try out for American Idol. Iam is so emotional in the room that he has trouble starting his song, dedicated to his dad.

When you see something so pure, you realize the studio don't need any fancy editing. Dried my eyes from crying so much 😭
Bang Tara 🤲
Sama bang 🥺
You're damned true ! This pureness just magnificent !
Bangggg 😭😭😭😭😭
Vanggg 😭😭
“I’m not your son, you’re not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye “- just hits me hard…
Yeah I agree, that was a tough one.
Agree. My dad and I were best buddies. Being beside his bed at our home with my brothers and mom was hard but humbling. We are all humans and we had to tell him goodbye.
He reminds me of Iz. His voice soothes and moves me at the same time.
i was thinking to myself “this song not too bad” then when he said that line gahhhhdam it hit me 😭😭
Man my dad just past a few days ago from cancer and this song hit me to deep
I'm a grown ass man looking at a phone sobbing. This kid is amazing.
same man, just found this and my laptop got tears everywhere
Me too bro😢
Sobbing?
@@bubbagump1306 sobbing means crying loudly
Same my man ..THE SAME !!!!!!!!
My dad passed on in October 2023. Because of this video, he wanted it to be played at his funeral. A friend of mine performed it and knocked it out the park. Thank you Iam, I will have this memory and video, forever
Hopefully he is in peace. My dad is still around so I'ma try to still cherish the moments together
@@Victor-nv2tl make as many memories as possible, take copious amounts of photos and videos. Cheers man, thanks for the message
Wish I had something like this, my father had no funeral 😢
@ronnie7100 I hope you received closure. All we can do is hold onto the memories. The last thing they would want is to see, is us suffer
Sorry for you’re lost Brody 🥺
This kid was my neighbor. He, his mom and his sister came to our house and sang to us on our front porch. He came over and he and I sang together while he played that guitar. I remember when his dad passed. It was so sad. I am so happy for him.
wow. you must be proud of him
wonderful story, wonderful Iam
Wowwww ❤❤❤
That’s awesome, thanks for sharing ❤
Lucky neighbor!
ssnd big 🤗 for IAM......very lovely man
My dad attended the funeral for Iam's dad. Music flows strong through the blood of the Tongi family. Never met you cousin, but I love you and wish you luck!!
Awwww !!!

What a beautiful young man with an amazing voice! An awesome tribute to his Dad who I am sure was smiling down at his son from heaven as he sang ❤️
Love this comment 💯
When Lionel realizes what the song really is, it hits him in the soul like a ton of bricks
I had exactly the same reaction as Ritchie at 2:49. "We're just two grown men saying goodbye" just hits differently.
Omg me too. When it started I was like “oh this is a nice little love song” and then my heart dropped when I heard that line.
That might be the most incredible performance I’ve ever heard. No auto tune, no producers. Just a boy with a guitar, mourning the death of his father.
Phenomenal
I knew that emotion would empower him to perform at 1000%.
Singing a song like this only happens once. The nerves and emotions turn it into something that can't be captured in the studio later.
That was awesome and hurt at the same time. That lil dude just made this grown man cry. I don’t have a dad but I lost my youngest brother in 2010. Death of your best friend who is also blood really sucks man. This kid has a long road ahead but he made it I know his pops is proud!!! Rip to his pops and RIP my lil brother!!!
I prefer the acoustic guitar to the electric. He was awesome.
Some music comes from the mouth.. some music comes from the mind... some music comes from the heart... This man's music comes from the very center of his soul. He didn't just sing a song to audition.... he gave us the privilege to enter his life and see his character, his love to see his father and his hope to secure his future. He didn't just share his music... he gave us a priceless gift. Iam Tongi, thank you.
I felt the sameway, he's going to Hollywood, and I hope he makes it deep in the finals. It got me.
Beautiful comment that has put the crazy string and graph of music into readable words and for that I thank u.
🙌🏽
I feel so bad for him 😢
So beautifully worded
It's simple. A father and sons bond is like no other.
If you have a decent father...
@adamw7340 decent or not, anyone can be a monster....what you let go of is blaming yourself for it, making yourself accountable for a monster who didn't ever blame himself. Make yourself better than him and then see what happens...still havent achieved the last bit..Will lyk how it goes
Lionel Richie is such a good person. His words are always a lesson.
To any son who's lost a father. This hits hard.
Yeah, man.
BIGTIME😓
I have my Father and it still hits hard.
I missss him sooo damnnn much and iam the oldest in the family, have to be strong to keep everyone together but when im alone, i scream…like im trying to scream the pain away from my soul…
Facts, i be damned if my eyes didn't well up when he said were just two grown men saying goodbye
Dude. This man single handedly made American Idol relevant again. I know I personally didn't even know it was still around until Iam's audition vent viral instantly. Mahalo and congrats to this young man.
Same !!!
He honestly sang this better than the original
Bro same I used to watch American idol but it's been over like 5 years since I've watched it but I came up on his video and he made it relevant for me again
Me too! I tuned out years ago but someone told me to watch this & it's just undone me! Can't stop crying. His voice is incredible & he's so young & humble. Wishing him all the best! ❤🎉
ABSOLUTELY 💯%
My mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer on November 28, 2023. In that time I have seen her fight for each day and to choose to make each say her best. She is my bestfriend, I cannot imagine what life is going to be without her. We are within the final stages and we don't know how long we have. Each day is a gift and a blessing.
This man's story touched a deep part of my soul. That was beautiful. I'll be showing my mom this video. I know she's going to love it.
I will pray for you and your mom.
Prayers to your mom!! She deserves the best and is doing her best throughout the process, bless you ❤❤
Wishing you beautiful memories with your mom. My father passed when I was eleven. It doesn't get easier, but rather becomes your new normal. I cherish all the time I had with him and hope you will too. ❤
I feel this young man's emotions! I lost my father when I was 21. I'm 54 now, and I've missed him every day! This song and his delivery have me in tears every time I hear it.
im 23, i lost my dad to colon cancer 3 years ago now, this song makes me bawl

Lets give James Blunt a round of applause for writing this amazing song. 👏

"People thought I cry because I miss him, but its because I hear him singing" what a beautiful statement shows his connection and spirit to the world. Makes you stop and think.
Damnit man this can’t be more true😔

What a beautiful thing to say. Kid is full of heart.
My dad passed 14 years ago. I still remember hearing my mom's blood curdling scream and i ran out of my room to see her standing at his feet as he was gone. I went through a major depression then I lost my mom 7 years after that and yeah this song just yeah

26 year old dude here. Lost my dad to terminal cancer when I was 19. Everything about Iam's demeanor and performance reminds me of myself shorty after my dad left and I couldn't stop crying after watching this. Wish I could give him a hug and just talk to him about it all. Love and Gratitude will always win. shoutout to all the amazing fathers out there.

I totally agree I cried felt him losing my father as well Iam Tongi did that this was my first time hearing this song and it was the perfect song for you you got this LETS GOO
Sorry for your looose
When this first came out, I cried because I empathize with him. I felt his love for his father. Now when I listen to this I sympathize with Iam. I just lost my dad a few weeks ago and this hits so hard. Sitting in the hospital, saying our goodbyes, I never asked for his forgiveness. I constantly told him I was taking him home to all his favorite things and people. I didn't want to spend our last moments together feeling sorrow. I wanted him to know I was taking him home and I was gonna make him proud. Damn, I miss my dad so much.
I'm so sorry❤
Even tho i am a sensitive person, its not often that something makes me cry. This one hit me straight in the heart and immediatly i wrote my dad that i will come for Dinner tomorrow, because i am lucky to still have my parents arround living just a few meters away. Thank you for reminding me what is really important in life. I am sure your Dad is proud of you just as he was when he still was alive. Wish you all the best young man. Your Voice and they way you delivered it is a gift to the world. Thank you
As an older musician of 35 years myself, I rarely give anyone a chance these days. Iam, something about you made me pause for a moment and lend my attention to you. When you began telling your story, I listened even closer...and then you began singing this song. In my 51 years there have been maybe 4 artists to bring me to tears and only one who brought tears that I could not stop. That was you!! Regardless of the results of this competition, I have no doubt you will go far with your talent. Your rendition of this song is so very special and I will pray that God brings you success. You deliver a love that is so rare in music these days. My heart broke during this performance but I immediately became a fan. This song, whether yours or not, was written for you to sing at this special moment in your journey. I truly wish you all the best in your career and life. As a Veteran, I salute you and as a father I send you my respect. Your father would absolutely be proud and is definitely shining on you. Bravo good sir. God Bless.
Wow
Beautiful words ❤️

Those were beautiful words. Thank you for your service sir.

I instantly started sobbing uncontrollably as soon as he started singing. My husband who lost his father a year ago was standing in front of the tv in tears he couldn’t even sit down. The only sound that filled our living room was this man’s beautiful voice and our sniffles. Truly captivated us and the room we were in through the tv. That’s insanely powerful. The gift you have is indescribable.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My heart goes out to you & your husband. ❤️

Easy for me to envision this moment. He really did fracture souls with this audition.
Best to you both as you try to navigate this season. I mean that. 💛🌈

Very much agree
Going to be a first time father this August and good lord does this make me emotional. It's wild how much love you can feel for a developing human that you haven't even met yet. I can't wait to meet my child. I hope I can be 1% of the father this young man's father was.
That young man only comes around once in a lifetime what a performance I'm honored to have listened to him the world is yours Iam Tongi
Man how can you not cry. This guy connected on so many levels. No crazy runs or showing off his voice. Just pure emotion, cant even imagine being in that room
You’re absolutely right!
And notice. The only (modern) woman on the panel did not shed a tear.

I didn't cry, after losing so many people I have learned to appreciate stuff more. I dont cry because its over, I laugh because it happened. Just remember how lucky we are to have the people we have, enjoy it while it lasts.

I’ve listened to this EASILY… over 100 times…. I still have my father, and 1 of my Grandpa’s…. I sob like a baby each time and it doesn’t matter when or where…. I listen and replay it over and over and over. Honestly it’s a great release. As a man, we all need this release. It doesn’t matter if you’ve experienced it, or will experience this pain…. It lets you know we all have an expiration date, we will never know when it is. So, hug everyone, be the greatest person you can be. Find something in your day that will make you happy and appreciative.
I’ve watched this numerous times and it still makes me cry . He is so deserving and humble. The love he shows for his Dad is touching. We love you Iam!
“Priced outta paradise.” Gosh, that’s sad. God bless this man and his family! What a beautiful, touching voice he has.
Sadly it’s true. Hawaii is like USA’s moneymaker out of greed.. Everything is up for the rich.
That's a song in itself and if the young man sees this?
He should pen
"Priced outa Paradise"
30,000 locals are moving from Hawaii each year. My 3 grand children moved to Vegas for a better life for them and their children. Local people that don't already have a house in Hawaii, can't afford to buy one now that starts at over half a million dollars on a zero lot(which means 10 feet between you and your neighbor with very little front and back yard. YES, priced out of paradise.
We are all getting priced out. I’m born and raised in Honolulu but my husband and I had to relocate to Arizona where we could actually afford to live
About to be priced out. Lucky enough to be living with family, but that can only last for so long. PSA don’t move to Hawai’i and if you visit pick up your trash and tip well 🙏
The fact he could keep himself together and sing this, is showing how strong he is, I’m sure his dad is super proud!
I think it also shows his love for music and the importance of conveying the message through song in a beautiful way.
I think he let the pain go while singing. He felt better as he sings
I know you love her.... but she has to experience me.... she has to... she loves me bro she won't tell you I will. Sorry.

watch when he sings about a hand on your arm and he looks to his side like his dad is there listening to him that's the moment that got me to tears and still does every time i watch this video
I noticed that one as well. And booom! Tears were flowing like river

I lost my dad last July after a torturous battle with ALS. Watching the strongest man I knew slowly lose control of all physical aspects in his life absolutely killed my soul. He did have have the final say in finally ending his suffering and while we will miss him so much forever, he was given one final bit of control back to his life. Miss you so much dad.
Iam Tongi - If you ever get a chance to read this comment, I want to say thank you. For introducing me to probably the most powerful song I have ever heard. My father and I rarely see eye to eye, yet after hearing your performance, I have a new found love and respect for him. I take him for granted when he's always had my back even though we had many disagreements. Thanks to you and James Blunt for this a million times! Now I realize that my dad isn't "bitching" at me. He just wants the best for me. It took me too long to realize, but now I can only hope to be half the father he is to me. I'm going to thank my father everyday now. Cheers and I'm rooting for you, Iam Tongi! Your father, Rodney Tongi, would be so proud!

@@angeloaristondo2475 Thank you as well for taking it to heart! I genuinely felt a huge change in me after listening to the words in this song. I’m disappointed it took me this long to look at things through his lens, because I am not a father just yet, but I’m so glad I found this song to really think about things. My dad is going to get a better and better version of me from now on! Cheers to you and hope you do well too!
I’ve never seen a more genuine reaction on this show than Lionel‘s reaction to this song. You can tell he immediately thought of his father. Powerful stuff.
So emotional 💔
You can see when it started too. Around 3:00 once that line drops, Lionel's left hand started shaking and he was like, "oohh" like he recognizes something is happening to his body and soul and it was because of this young man's song.
That’s my reaction when I eat chick fil a for the first time after a few months.
Lionel's reaction was definitely one the highlights of this video. Watching him struggle to keep his composure because of this performance was really something else.

I am so glad this young man won America idol, he had us in tears last night as he sang monsters. Love Iam’s voice he is going to go far. Congratulations Iam 🎉
@@mar6268 amen 🤞
Amen.. Godbless him
Everyone knows Colin should have won.
“Priced out of paradise” my respect grew further for this young man and how he represents us Hawaiians/polys !!. Way to show the world your voice/talent and the message about how our people are being priced out of our lands over the generations 🥲. Braddah deserves everything good comming to him, and I hope he makes it BIG so that he can return to his RIGHTFUL home: HAWAII NEI 🏝💯 dad must be smiling so proud up there
same, I cried when he mentioned having to leave his land for Seattle
Yeah, aside from losing his dad, the financial struggles. I am praying for Iam's success.
His performance touched me.
Aloha & so true about the daily price we have to pay, job(s) we work to make ends meet, and he represented all people of Hawaii Nei
And what's even worse, is the education system in HI is NOT attached to property taxes. So the children get screwed over that way too.
such a beautiful voice! you are one special son an your dad is smiling up in heaven an has to be so proud of you!! many , many applauds👏👏👏 to you!!!
song is and expression incomprehensible to the human mind, it speaks to the spirit. And this man sure spoke to mine.
Who else came back to hear this again just to hear it and tear up again and again dang it Iam! Go get’em!!! 🤙🏽🇬🇺

Nice to see some people out there like me! Sadness sometimes brings joy... if it's a great memory.
The Samoan and Tongan people can sing like no others. Our church on Sunday had a second service held by Tongan people. Only about 25 people, but it sounded like 100. The harmony, just beautiful. Yes, I've lived in Hawaii since 1963, when he said Kahuku, I knew we were in for a treat. I'm still in tears.
Hawaii and the Polynesian culture has knocked it out of the park with Iam Tongi here.
The can also wrestle. #Bloodline
It's an overlooked culture in America which is a shame. They bring so much talent and should be showcased more. I think you're starting to see that more lately, though. So that's good.
@@Corina_June_Cunningham stolen land. It shouldn’t really be considered part of America. Especially since the people that created that culture and grew up there are being kicked out by billionaires, soon it’ll just be a bunch of islands owned by CEO’s
@@Corina_June_Cunningham Ah, but he can do it! I have heard him sing in person and he can sing even better!
The power of music is soooo real.. I still have my father and I thank God every day but I can feel this man's pain. God bless you and your family and im sure your father is by your side the whole way. God bless 🙏
Amazing voice. Amazing song. This kid made it his own. Absolutely beautiful. Soulful delivery and composure. Had me full on ugly crying fifteen seconds in. Beautiful soul. I wish him nothing but success and happiness. Mahalo, young man. Your father is proud and smiling.
Absolutely beautiful voice! This young man should be proud knowing his father taught him well. 🙏🏻🙏🏻😊😊
Fantastic , what a song choice and what a voice.
"Dont be afraid ..its my turn to chased the monster away" hit me to deep.for those who still lucky to have a father just appreciate them
Listen to keep the wolves away - uncle lucious
I will .
@Rap_savy if you like that lyric you gonna love that song. Discovered it the day I drove to the hospital when I had to sign papers to take my pops off life support. Such a great song imo
i will
So true. I miss my dad so much.
My dad passed a few years ago from brain cancer, I was 17. As soon as he said his dads name (my dads name was also Rodney) I got emotional. My dad was a singer, he had a few covers of singles produced in the 80s and I still have his records, this hit very close to home. Iam, you have an amazing voice, the power of emotion is uncomparable.
I don’t if it’s the fact that I never had a father or if it’s just his delivery, but Iam’s performance breaks me every single time I hear it.
I’ve seen this multiple times and it cuts right through me every time. The love and respect a son has for his father is something only they understand.
Same idc how many times I watch this I cry every time
A lot of sons don't have respect for their fathers because their fathers are absent. Lots of black people don't have fathers. Their mothers had sperms donors. The women slept with men without protection and without any moral compass. The men came and went like they would do at the red light district.
Man my wife and I plan on trying for a child soon and I always find my way back here. lol This video makes me cry like a damn baby.
Same here bro. This video pops in my feed every few months and it does it to me as well every time.
Same
The fact that this is the most viewed video on the American platform ever tells you just how much his audition and how his spirit has connected with so many people. Love Iam, doing great things to share the culture, the spirit, and the power of music. Just Amazing!
Amen brother hope Iam wins
@@SereneBliss & he actually wins
I don't think i have ever seen a song sung with such passion. Amazing talent.
You should see Janes Blunt sing it.
after 57 years on this planet you see and hear everything till the point of no surprises but this guy with this song cut open those old cloths and damn it gave me chill bumps and opened my heart to the greatest gift of life - LOVE
I can't imagine being an 18-year-old guy who just lost his father 2 months prior, and having the courage to sing about it while the world is watching. Bravo, young man, bravo!
the best music comes from pain...sad but true
Amen. I am so grateful I had my dad till I was 35. But it still hurts and seeing this young man sing his feels is healing in so many ways. God bless you, young man.
I'm 74. I lost my Dad nine years ago. I was 12,000 miles away and within 24 hours of learning he was dying I got on a plane heading home. He passed while I was in the air and to this day I regret not getting to say goodbye. This young man expressed in just a couple of minutes how anyone who has lost a parent feels. The roles change, father to son, mother to daughter, but the love lives on, and the memories are forever.
my content vids are better than american idol
@@gambalombo It’s really not
I hope your dad rests in peace. You got this and your dad is proud of you
Hugs 🥺
Much love my friend.
the best pure right-to-the-heart singing audition, I even couldn't hold back my tears every time watching the guy singing... from Egypt for Rodney and his great son with love
Young man my heart bleeds for you and I love ya brother. Losing a parent is so hard. You’re in my prayers and I hope this world grants you all that you deserve my friend.
How he kept his composure for this is beyond me. My Dad passed 5 years ago and I can't even listen to this without losing it, let alone trying to sing it.
I’m in the same boat, I can’t even say the words without losing it.
I tried singing along and broke into tears . I still have my father…
My dad passed away 5 years ago on April 2nd. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sending you love, peace, and healing to your whole family.
They kept going. Jeez just let the guy sing before you make him cry 😂
@@IAmKrazyKyle I feel this comment. This video made me miss my dad and he's still with me
"While you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud, so Daddy won't you just close your eyes..."
This line hits me more than the others. We weren't just watching an Idol audition, we were watching a son sing to his father😢
Ayo why you gotta write this and make me cry more.
😭😭😭😭❣
💯
Beautifully said ❤
Sometimes a song transcends the words and hits you right in the soul. What an amazing performance. I'm crying my eyes out. Good luck young man. ❤
I watched this, cried and just called my dad to say I love him. That was emotional man
I love how Katie asked Iam his father's name. That was very sensitive and thoughtful of her to let him recognize his father.
👍👍👍👍👍
It’s scripted lol
@Robert Underwood yeah so scripted "next guy his dad's dead just ask his dad's name okay Katie?"
@@okaton6559 don’t forget the cry on command
I’m 35, my father was on his death bed when I watch this on tv. And I balled my eyes out. A couple weeks later he passed away. This song and rendition brings me to my knees. I love you dad. It’s my turn to chase the monsters away.
😭😭😭 I’m crying!!
I'm sorry for your pain, Brother. My Dad died in 2001. I miss him with all of my heart and this song tears me to pieces, but I promise you it gets better. I love you, bro. Hang in there.
😭😭😭
He's with you even now partner, love cannot be broken and he is present in all your actions and all the ripples that move out from you in this world.
RIP to your father Bobby. 🙏
Cried like I didn’t think I could. What an incredible young man. Hope he won the show and I hope he continues with his career in music.
