theres enough will it start videos out there that you should know what to expect with resurrections . hydraulics are only going to add to the complexity and probability of a failure for all the reasons an old car has issues after sitting . its probably worth it to drain and filter your fluids if there was a catastrophic failure previously as the remains will still be circulating. check your wear items there probably out of spec , keep materials for hose repair on hand you will probably have a need of it . good luck with the road and the concrete keep in mind the white stuff in winter so make it wider lol. thanks for the videos.

For being a novice operator on old equipment I think you guys are still coming out way ahead. This dozer is holding up well. Just fix what breaks, keep moving forward and with the repairs you should still be able to get a good price for the dozer at the end of this. Just imagine what it would cost to hire a company to come out and build this road for you. Keep that figure in mind as you have to spend money on repairs. That should help to soften the sting a bit.

    • @AmbitionStrikes
      @AmbitionStrikes  2 роки тому +76

If it is, I feel like you have been saying what you are accomplishing with the dozer is better than what you would have accomplished without it (eg. wider road, etc.) Regardless I think it is amazing what you are doing and I really look forward to all your videos.

Potential solutions to your shifting problems:
1.There is another transmission screen and magnet on the exhaust manifold side toward the front of the engine. Probably would be wise to check and clean that one too.
    2. The transmission pump may be sucking air and losing prime. This pump is located on back of engine just behind the oil filters. If this pump loses pressure it won’t shift or brake. Most possible air entry point is the suction tube down under transmission (pretty much below the u joints). There is a rubber suction hose down there connecting the steel suction tubes. If it’s leaking (and it looks like it is), that means air can enter. Make sure the clamps are tight and double clamp each end if needed until no leaks.
Another issue we had is that the trans screen and magnet tops didn’t get installed and seated properly. It leaked air and burned up the pump.

I bought an engine swap kit from the US years ago and the mechanic who did the work couldn’t stop talking about how well it was made and how much better it was than anything that he can buy that’s made here in Australia. For all its faults, the US is capable of amazing things.

The blue rag in the filter made me roll my eyes. There is a reason surgical nurses do a sponge count after surgery, that mechanic should start doing a rag count after repairs. He was just bad.

Outstanding work on repairing and maintaining the dozer. That beast is going to come in handy. And there's alot of value in having your own piece of equipment so you can do the work on your schedule. Not limited to rushing it because your rental time is running out. Plus I'm sure there's more work for that dozer at a neighbor or two's property. Nothing like having something that you can trade services for something else you need. Plus, after a a year or two when you feel the big projects are over, you can always sell the dozer and recoup some or all of your money.

Although it's costly and time that you are not constructing the road, you are learning valuable skills and experience.
Watch Letsdig18 and Dirtperfect channels, you will see that they to are having to spend money and time on repairs both New and old machines, you are not alone .

The best way I found to do that Coma is clean it off like you're doing then use high pressure air and it will blow all the finds away from the magnet faster than the magnet can reattract . And yes you should Check that filter once a week for a while. Now on another note I looked at your track tightness.. And it looks to me like your tracks are just a little bit tight in this video video. 1" of deflection on the top , between The front idler and the top roller is proper tension . If a track is too tight it will blow the seal on the track tensioner cylinder. Have fun stay safe

Like Y’all I have old equipment because that is what I could afford. As you are discovering, it often requires fixin’. I feel your pain and frustration. The good news is y’all have the ability to work through it and get it done. Best wishes as you keep moving forward.

Big boy / girl older heavy equipment = big boy / girl expensive breakdowns :( We are all impressed with your great attitude and diligence, it will be well worth it in the end with your new better then ever road so the concrete trucks can get up and pour you shop floor as well as no more huge hassles of trying to navigate (getting stuck) up the old road during winter and wet spring seasons. You guys are very inspirational THANK YOU :) 2023 I am planning to purchase property out west and build something similar off grid. Taking tons of notes and saving my pennies for the adventure of a lifetime.

I've always gone through my stuff when I buy someones old junk and check and replaceeverything that is maintenance related consummables! One it helps me understand the machine from the get go, an 2 it gives it less chance of breaking on me when I really start using it.
You're learning the hard way how to do repairs on this Monster, but I applaude the fact that you aren't throwing money at it, and letting someone else get drenched in oil......
FIL used to road construction and I've seen him do these battles every day just to keep new equipment going after the Hired Help abused the big machines, because they wern't the ones paying to fix it.

The older heavy equipment does need lots of maintenance and repairs from wear and tear and the amount of hours it has, we still operate old machinery from the late 70’s, 80’s and 90’s sparingly as backups to our newer and modern machinery, proper inspections, maintenance, and service should keep the older machinery operating for a long time.
Western States is a great company to deal with, we rent D7’s and 950’s from their Spokane or Pasco locations.

Sorry about the dozer blues.... good news is easy. Keep good records, of costs. And parts. And time and labor. When you sell it you'll make a good profit.

Having 23 years in the boom truck/small crane business, when I need a part from National Crane, one I can't source elsewhere, this is the pricing method I use: whatever $ amount I first think it will cost, I double it. Then, while waiting for it to be shipped, I double it again. THAT gets me in the ball park so when I see the bill I don't pass out.

More advice: save all large cardboard boxes that you get to put under your equipment and vehicles while working on them! Much easier to slide in and out on, then dirt and rocks!

When I first started buying equipment a good friend of mine told me that "iron holds its value." In most cases you will sell a piece of equipment for what you paid for it. The cost of repairs and maintenance is the price you pay to do the job. With your mindset and the tools to fix this yourselves, you absolutely will be ahead of the "cost curve" when you sell that Cat dozer to the next lucky owner.

Just a thought about not being able to see in front of the dozer blade...I would get a rear view add-on camera and screen, mount it in end of a 1/2" conduit extended from you roll cage to over the blade. mount the screen right in front of you. Cat skinners would cajole, but you could see what is going on out front. I'm going to mount one on my backhoe. It might have to be repaired once in a while...but I want to see what is in front of my machine...I don't run my machine all the time and need all the help I can get. May become a add-on by the manufacturer's. With your genius you can figure it out..Love your work.

On the first day you brought that big machine home i said to myself you’re fixing to get a cram course in old equipment repairs. Everything is big, heavy, hard to get to, and expensive. That’s why you can buy those things really reasonable. I have a old 64 D7 that I had for about 10 or 12 years and it’s just a Angelica that I use around here and if you can get 3040 hours out of here with that working on setting consider yourself extremely lucky.
Well I will give you a hat so he jumped right in and fix it yourself. I used to, but after too heart attacks I just don’t have the energy to do it anymore.

Make a magnet with a microwave oven transformer to clean the magnet filter, or use a mag drill magnet if you have one. Then cut the power to clean the electromagnet

ADVICE: use lots of penetrating oil on all bolts to be removed. Use oil on ALL DRILL BITS AND TAPS! Don't be cheap with the oil. Also when removing stubborn and broken bolts, always try to heat up the metal the bolt is coming out of. Makes removal much easier!

So, from my many years of fixing old things: If it's a boat, take it right down to the hull. Fix the hull like your going to the Americas. Build up from there. I can tell you that I learned that the hard way. We build up a boat and then had to take off stuff that we installed to get to stuff below that. Sometimes you don't have time for that, but it will cost. If you get the thing ninety percent fixed and you get the job done... sell the thing. Your not really screwing anyone at that point.
