Wonderful stuff Gordon. As an "incomer" (only lived here about 28 years) I love to hear all the history of the area.Truly underestimated cycling channel.

Thanks, Dave. I still feel lucky to have such a fantastic cycling area on the doorstep. Even though the rides to limestone country have dried up due to lack of time, the local rides never disappoint. So many self-contained adventures in less than two hours from the front door.

Well done Gordon. I've been waiting for you to do this route particularly the Headley Lane climb which I suggested you do. You can extend it by 20 minutes by including Ten Yards Lane at the back of Thornton. Again the scenery is spectacular. Great stuff again and learned about Headley Hall even though I've lived in Queensbury for over 30 years.

Cheers, Stevie. I did that Sub 2 Hour series in November & December & I remember your suggestion but we had a run of hard frosts and I just didn't fancy those little untreated lanes. I did one ride over Soil Hill after the frost had melted but nearly came a cropper on the descent with wet roads & low winter sun.
When the foot & mouth blew up in March 2001 I did a lot of training around here and this circuit became a regular for a while - sometimes I'd come into it from Denholme Gate lights rather than the farm shop road. The other climb I did back then started a little further down Thornton Rd and came out at the hatch-box closer to the centre of Queensbury - I wonder if that's Ten Yards Lane?
I'll look it up - I don't always know the names of the roads.
I'll be heading out again to Egypt & Wilsden at some point maybe even take in the dreaded Denholme Alpe d'Huez!

@@billkosses3808 That would be super. The channel has just reached its 2nd birthday and I've tried to keep the focus on the pleasure of escaping to lovely accessible countryside ,coming home in a better mood than when you set off.
I had a series of Sub 2 Hour rides last autumn that was well-received with viewers planning and riding their own local equivalents. That's the best kind of feedback.

It was prime country for evening hill reps in the old days. Away from the main roads and villages and fairly light traffic most of the time, plus it's scenic enough for today's more sedate riding.
You can see why I didn't fancy it with sparkly roads in December when I was doing the Sub Twos.

I was getting a bit stressed at the prospect of a hill-start on that slope!
There are three steep ramps en-route to Headley Hall then it eases into more typical draggy climbing. I might wait for a tailwind before I try it again!

According to Halfords (yes, that Halfords) Bradford is the hilliest city in England.
I haven't done that Headley lane. According to my elevation map it's a climb of just over 160 meters. James St on the other side of Thornton is bad enough but nowhere near 160 meters.
I have done the 3 viaducts to Cullingworth. Just wish they would restore and open the tunnels, what a run that would be.

    • @clippingin1593
      @clippingin1593  2 місяці тому +1

@@vihuelamig It's 20+ years since I did Headley Lane and I admit it caught me out today - there's nowhere to rest between those 17-18% ramps. I'll give it another go in a month or two, preferably with a tailwind.
There was talk of opening the Holmfield - Queensbury tunnel for bikes but I doubt whether it will come to anything.

It's great cycling country, Claire. I last went up Headley Lane in foot & mouth year, 2001, so I wasn't sure how I'd manage today. Just got away with it.
I've done Shibden a few times in the old days but you need traffic-free luck on that halfway left-hander because the inner line is vertical.
In 87 I watched the professionals - incl Sean Kelly - going up Shibden in the Kelloggs Tour. Incredible sight, packed crowds & some riders were asking for pushes!
