    A tip ceases to be a tip when it becomes expected. I think the same idea applies to workers. Tips should be a reward for excellent service not an expected part of overall compensation. Pay workers a fair wage and stop relying on customers to contribute directly to their compensation.

    • @redtiger7268
      @redtiger7268 16 днів тому +9

      The issue is that because of the laws that allow companies to pay less than min wage with the expectation that the difference is made up through tips than it is by default "expected." Companies should not be able to have this bifurcated wage structure. It is a way to pass a hidden cost to customers and increase the bottom line of a company.

      SO TRUE.

    • @Mike__B
      @Mike__B 16 днів тому +1

      @@redtiger7268 That's an issue to be certain, but it isn't the heart of the issue, even in states which require every person to be paid at least minimum wage there's a tipping "problem". There could be a restaurant where wait staff is getting $50/hr, tipping will still be there unless it's some prix fixe setup that specifically says "gratuity already included"

    • @redtiger7268
      @redtiger7268 16 днів тому

      @@Mike__B You show me one restaurant in America where a server is paid $50 an hour and than I'll entertain your hypothetical. You missed my point. The tipping problem is that some restaurants are using it to offset the wages they should be paying. As a result of people getting fed up with tip screens 10%-15% no longer tip ANYWHERE. This has lead to bad service across the board because now even when someone gives perfect service there is a good chance they will not get tipped. Now add that to the tip out that most restaurants REQUIRE. Yes require. At most restaurant as a server you are required to pay the house 5% of the bill to fund the wages of back of the house or traditionally non-tipped (hostess) employees regardless if the table left anything or not.

    • @Mike__B
      @Mike__B 16 днів тому

      @@redtiger7268 No, I really didn't miss your point. I stated there are plenty of places where they do not pay less than minimum wage, and tipping is still a problem. And yeah it's exactly for the reasons you mention. It's an entire industry that is latched onto the idea that tipping is a better way to keep their books balanced then actually paying them "enough", places that give less than minimum wage are a problem, but so are places that pay more than minimum wage, and yes those restaurants exist, and they still expect tipping to help them out regardless of service.

  • @TheRealConcertKing

    It's INSANE that the employees at Gideon's are paid as tipped employees. Sure, tip if you feel like it, when I visited there I had great service from everyone, but that is not a place that I would consider as a normal place to tip. By that I mean something like a sit down restaurant. So to pay them as such is a joke and makes me think very poorly of the Gideon's company (not even considering all of the other issues mentioned). That place makes more than enough money to pay all of the employees a living wage (well beyond $16/hr) yet they found a loophole to only pay them $8 because they can legally get away with it, something all companies can and will do whenever possible. I'm glad you talked about this here to bring attention to it because I wasn't aware of this and I think it's important to bring it more publicity.

    Gideons: it’s not a restaurant. Why would they work for tips? It’s a shop. I don’t go to Dunkin’ Donuts and tip the person who hands me the donut that is sitting in the case waiting for me to buy it anymore than I expect to tip the cashier who scans my onions.

      I think the management of many places use tips to pay their staff less. I don’t know how it works in Florida, but where I live, if workers get tips, then you can pay well below minimum wage. It might also affect some other things depending on how laws are written.

I waited so long I almost jumped the counter, because where are the staff? There’s probably just ONE person scheduled that day. And before you say that’s why they need tips, so they can staff it, no. I am not compensating for your failing business. Minimum wage is $7.25/hr, yet you’re hiring at $15-20?!? Anyone making $15-20 an hour isn’t a tipped employee, and should never be. Disney took an already broken pass holder preview system and made it even more ridiculous, not only do you have to get a park reservation but then you have to take a chance to actually get the virtual queue on the day of, Disney needs to stop with this stuff it’s getting ridiculous, if you have a pass holder preview have a standby line and let people wait end of story simple and it works

    • @judgesh
      @judgesh 16 днів тому +5

      Virtual queue guarantees that
      - they don't have to show a standby wait time of 4+ hours
      - they don't have to keep the ride running 2+ hours after park close to ensure everyone in line rides (nor do they have to stop queuing before park close)
      - if there's extended maintenance, they can artificially limit the amount of queues given out at 1pm
      - Also if there's extended maintenance, they don't have to give out recovery to thousands of people in line (instead only a few hundred)
      Operations loves it too much to ever give it up.

      It won’t be as good as splash mountain because Disney took cost cutting to the max on this from what it was originally imagined, I just hope it isn’t a bomb, they didn’t even base the ride off the movie they created a different “story” in a timeline sometime after the movie, I think it will be a pretty boring ride with a few good animatronics of characters we know, it won’t be a home run it won’t be horrible it will just be kinda meh

    I do think they should end tipping at Gideons and just pay whatever the standard minimum wage is. As far as the employees moaning about what they are expected to do and work outside, that is true for most of the Disney CMs at the parks where they work outside or rotate from inside to outside. Get over Gideons employees! If you don’t like the job there are dozens of other places in Disney Springs to work!

    I don’t understand this gideons tips thing, you can still tip them, tips have not been banned, they still come up on the payment machine, staff just can’t overtly ask for tips, a lot of people don’t like being asked for tips, so ironically they might make more money from doing this if people feel less forced or uncomfortable. I want people to earn enough but I do not personally feel comfortable being outright asked for a tip and I would probably not use the business again if I had a negative experience there. I think they just need to end tipping altogether and pay staff a higher flat wage. It shouldn’t be on me to be guilt tripped into topping up wages, instead, just make the cookies more expensive. It’s like they want to raise your blood pressure and make the interaction more stressful. I also think if the letter had come out after a few months where they could show their average wage had dropped by xx number on average from no longer asking, then it would have more impact.
