This 1984 Yamaha tenera had been standing many years and had parts stolen off it. In this video I install a replacement CDI and bring the bike back to life.
My comment comes too late, but running the bike without battery has a good chance of frying the voltage regulator/rectifier. I have my XT600 for close to 35 years. It is in storage now and I only start it every once in a while to get things moving a bit. But I always hook up a 12V battery when doing so.
You are correct, not only can it damage the regulator but blow lights and so on too. however under idle with a few gentle revs it will be fine. This XT btw has a aftermarket regulator
Darn it I've got one of these to get going. Always wondered why XT 600 owners had one leg bigger than the other
Its been starting a lot easier now that its been running some more
You did a lot of investigation, and great job!

Great that it starts again. I must say the engine has a bad knocking sound. Could be a crank bearing?
Hi No what you heard is a bad exhaust leak (its been repaired since), these bikes have roller bear cranks.
if the bike has a starter it will not work that cdi will only work on a kick start model only
Hey Baseman awesome project do you have a 34L or a 39E vin number?
Hi Ryan, Ill take a look in the new year once Im back at my workshop
It’s a 39E motor
@@sebs27 that’s good to know mine is also a 39E.
