Bumbry opens her mouth and a FLOOD of tone pours effortlessly from her body. Goodness gracious that is one resonant voice. She sang well into her 70’s.
To the great artists, little things mean a lot, and sometimes you stop the rehearsal to correct the problem immediately. Bumbry showed no rudeness, only the subtle ear that made both of them legends.
This comment is not meant to discredit Leontyne Price in any way-Ms. Price is a national treasure. It's a shame, though, that these two wonderful singers did not receive the same recognition as Ms. Price. It's also a shame that the public seems to compare Price, Verrett, Bumbry and Arroyo because of their race. Regardless of race, these are very talented women, and all 4 have made the world a better place with their singing!
Mark Carpenter , I apologize for my English : we should never forget Mrs VERRET had been the first Afro American Opera Singer to get courage to claim about Human Rights for BLACK OPERA SINGERS !! BUMBRY and PRICE did almost nothing to help Afro-Americans but VERRET did a lot and WE MUST NEVER FORGET what VERRET did !! HONORS to Mrs VERRET !!!!!!
As an accompanist I must sadly agree with your comment. It means the accompanist is good-he or she enhances the singer. The ironic thing is-how interesting would a recital be without piano accompaniment, especially in some of Schubert's lieder where the piano part "makes" the piece. To prove your point-and it's a good point- I DO notice who the accompanist is...LOL.
don't you folks realize this is staged? the whole thing is set-up, incl. the interruption and the part about "who should sing norma or adalgisa?" this is from the intermission feature of their joint recital at convent garden in 1983. it was later broadcast on the PBS (US public tv system). it's a similar program to the one they gave at carnegie hall, and later repeated in california.
baritonebynight , I’m sorry , you’re wrong !! VERRET passed away years ago , she is not teaching anymore ! She died BEFORE you wrote your message .....
"...we both have been STARRS as mezzo singers and we are STARRS as soprano singers!"
Caskader , that is just the truth !!

i watch this when I'm having a bad day 😀
RIP Verrett - dazzling smile, infectious laugh, that voice and the artistry! sad as it is she's gone, she must have lived an incredible life
ELEGANTLY SCARVED.
Always😁
We need more divas like these two!!!
The age of great divas (i.e., great singers), God bless them. It’s all finished now.
Царство Небесное Грейс!Спасибо,вы,так пели!!!!❤
TWO QUEENS!!!!
I love Grace's BIG hair!!!
RIP Ms. Bumbry! 💐
You have to be a very talented singer to have the self-assured confidence to stand next to _Bumbry._
_Thank you very much, "operazine" !_
Good to see Jonathan at the piano. He accompanied Ms.Bumbry for many years.

The vocalist would care. The pianist can make them or break them. Good pianists are a dime a dozen-a good accompanist is like gold.

Verrett is the greatest of them.
They didn't call her "La Nere Callas" for no reason!

HONORS to Mrs VERRET !!!!!!
I couldn't agree more! These are two of the greatest of all time!

Don't apologize for your English ! The History Lesson you give was _perfect !_
That is so funny! I agree he should have worn a scarf too. But on a serious note, these two ladies are just incredible and fab!
Not to diminish any of the artistry, but this video also has a cuteness overload factor for me!
Two adorable divas
Oh my GOD!!!! Wow! I'm speechless......!!!!
THIS IS A WONDERFUL DUET!
Ms. Bumbry says "chaste, you know a pure one"

Thank you very much for letting us know when this was produced. The poster never even did that. I was wondering.
I dunno who they are but that was beautiful
Who is the coach??
Grace Bumbry´s voice is so amazing! she has more timbre than Verrett, but Verret has more air, and do the phrases more enphatized. It´s my opinion.
Bumbry is still singing VERY well, and Verrett is teaching a U mich.
baritonebynight , I’m sorry , you’re wrong !!
VERRET passed away years ago , she is not teaching anymore !

What is Grace talking about?
Chasta?
Pure?

No one but a pianist would care who the pianist is.
SON TAN INCREIBLEMENTE HERMOSAS Y TALENTOSAS!!!! LOVE THEN FOREVER.
