One of the best cargobike what I ever seen. Not difficult to do, not a huge Titanic, the chain-steering is WOW, not need 1 year and the Toyota factory's tools to create it, this bike worth all minutes what needed to create. And nice! Thanks for video :)
love the chain steering did the same thing on a dirt track many years ago used a camshaft and a crank shaft gear because they are 2 to i and that gave me quicker steering.
I'm planning to make a trike with a front cargo like yours, my chair will ve leveled at the 2 rear wheel like old racing car. And ive been thinking about using chainring as steering like what youve done. NO HONESTLY I NEVER THOUGHT OF SUCH GREAT IDEA. thanks for sharing man I love it hope I can make it work like yours
It is quite simple. I welded rear gogs on the end of both steering tubes. Afterwards I realized that you can do powersteering by putting bigger gog on the back tube.
@@Hemppa Thanks. So essentially measuring the width of both cogs and lining up the chain. What about micro chain adjustments if it wasn't measured correctly? Great work, man.
I tried to line the chain and it went well. Correct chain lenght was just trying out and finding the Correct lenght. Theres almost No stress to the chain so it wont strech.
That's what I'm into building... low tech no frills simple cargo bikes... and I'm going to post a video of one I'm currently building... I just got to learn how to film while building, not everyone is good at making and editing videos! ;P
On top of that, you're doing an entire separate job, filming and getting the process video'd correctly as you go. I tip my hat to folks who film construction projects as they build. I don't think that's easy.
This is just replica of omnium minimax bike. I just copy mesurments out of that bike. This is best cargobike I have ride. I highly rocommend to build something like this.
I think the chain steering's clever, but how did you calculate the correct length of chain you'd need? 🤔 Did you need to adjust the rear headset sprocket to allow the chain to set properly? In other chain steer remote steer set up, I remember seeing only a few inches of chain used and cables so the slack could be adjusted.
@@Hemppa , I still can't understand how you guessed? the right number of links, to fit both sprockets evenly, in the length from the steerer tube to the front headset. I get that it CAN be set evenly, but not without some measuring of sprockets and the distance between them, before you constructed the bike. 🤔
I did it after the bike was built. I took chain and put it on both spocets and cut the chain from correct point. If I remember correctly it first was too loose and I then removed link or two.
So nice! I just got a bike and going to try to do one as well. I'm wondering wich size did you use for the square tube? and can you give an idea of the lenght and where the two stearing tube are? Sorry for asking all of this but I've a bad habit of oversizing everything :D
I think that the square tube is 40x40mm and I chose it because the steering tube can go thru it. I estimated the lenhg between the steering tubes by lookin pictures of omnium minimax bikes. I can take mesurments tomorrow for you. The bike is really nice I am glad you are building one. Wich bike are you building it on?
@@Hemppa the guy before get rid of the stickers so impossible to know but the only one left is the Tange Tube sticker and was mounted with old Deore LX component :) Oh so nice, I have a long 40x40x 2mm thick. No problem by attaching to the down tube, I see a lot of these replica and the majority redo the downtube as well of bend it for the case of the replica? But I assume that if you still love the bike, you didn't got the issue :D
And if you have time, it will be so nice if you can take some measurement :) And maybe it won't work as well and quick with my bike as it is a 26" but who knows :D andthanks a lot of for the video already!
@@Hemppa Your cargo bike looks great!! I am planning to build a corgo bike on my own originally a long John but after I saw your bike I am very interested in this concept. It's the first time I "build" a frame so would it be possible to get some further information (plans, pics, measurements...) - it would be very helpful. Thank you very much.
I dont remember exsact mesurments but I just lenghtened the original steering tube with about same size tube and cut it to the correct lenght after the I had the front tube lined.

Your Chain-steering idea is great👍
Thanks, it has worked great over three years now without any problems.

The best model cargo bike!!!
I agree, this is my daily commuter still
Great project! Defenetly be my next one! Thanks for the inspiration Heikki!
I am glad to help out if you have some questions.
That steering has been in my brain for awhile now. You did a fantastic job on the build. Well done sir!
Thanks, I highly recormend this steering system, it works really well!
@@Hemppa Hey! Love the tutorial . Mind showing us more of how you built the chain steering??

Nice job! i really like the idea of chain steering!
Thanks! Bike has been in daily use for two months now and the steering still works nicely!
The chain steering is ingenious...
Thanks, not my OG idea
Nice bike
Wonderful build
Would just have taken round tubes everywhere - slightly better optics
Very nice

hey heikki, enjoyed your video! which thickness are the steel tubes?
i love this! what fork angle are you using? been thinking about using an angled headset when i build mine in case i need to adjust slightly
I tried to keep the same angle that the original bike had. It has been working just fine.
Awesome build, do you know of a plan available anywhere for this kind of build?

I found the correct lenhgt throuhg trial and error. The chain has been working ever since. It has never been adjusted in any way.

Does the steering chain not loosen over time ?
Nice design. I'm looking for designs I can use my everlast welder to make.
If you are looking for really good bike plans I highly recommend Atomic Zombie plans. www.atomiczombie.com/plans/
woow so nicee!!
at what angle did you drill the hole for the fork in the middle profile??
I dont know the ecsact angle, but I tried to drill it in the same angle as the original front tube of the bike frame.
What is insider the steering tube? How did you prolongue it? What is the diameter of that tube and the rectangular frame?......really a nice result

Which cargo bike do you prefer to ride?
This omnium replica is defenetly the Best To ride. It is almost like normal bike but can carry huge loads.
Hemppa thanks I may make a cargo bike in the future. Good to get an opinion on the two I am considering.
