Carl Palmer ,in my world, is one of my top 5 drummers of all time.. what an animal to see and hear!
One of the most talented and nicest guys in the music industry … carl always has and always will be my drumming and musical hero.
Most under rated drummer. He should always be mentioned in any 10 top list in my books.
Carl Palmer is truly the soul survivor of ELP and handled the band's legacy very well here in this interview.
He is the Leader of ELP, always was, The Dude is Alpha, Awesome and Decisive. Period.
@@viking90706 I think Neil Peart was who your thinking of!
Trust me I loved ELP But Rush did some really awesome music, But Pink Floyd will always be my favorite band and its the only one I didn't see live in concert aside of Led Zeppelin who refused to play this city ever again after they came out drunk and blew it and got booed off the stage.
To this day I don't think even Robert Plant has played in Kansas City solo.
@@viking90706 Nah mate, Palmer is one of the best drummers on prog but he was never the leader of ELP. The leader would be Keith Emerson. Keith was the brain of the band and the main songwriter, while Greg was the lyricist and would write music too.
Always pleasant humble and professional, that personality has given me countless hours of company, and entertainment. Class all the way. Welcome back maestro.
It is extremely nice of you to keep GREGG LAKE and KEITH EMERSON' s LEGACY alive ....All the best from the fans in ROMANIA !!!
We LOVE ASIA and what you do as a drummer ! You are one of the best drummers in the world !
Losing JOHN WETTON must have been unbearable for you , and also for the band . Keep up the good work, CARL !
The ROMANIAN fans salute you and look forward to seeing you in a BIG CONCERT in ROMANIA ! CHEERS !
ELP is timeless music. Carl, you're the best of the best.
Great interview. Carl is a drummer/musician one rarely hears about when mentioning really successful talents. Underrated and least appreciated in the drum world. And with his greatness such humility and always giving high praise to people he has worked with. In his seventies still so youthful and such a clear and sharp mind. Wonderful job of keeping the ELP tradition alive. I think Kieth and Greg would be quite happy of how Carl has carried on through the years. Thank you Carl, Kieth, and Greg for your amazing inspiration in the entertainment world. Aloha
This former amateur drummer's favorite drumming hero
Had to do a double take when I saw your handle: initially thought that I was seeing my own name even though I'd never seen this video.
Carl Palmer is one of the Greatest Drummer's ever !! it would be fun to see him do a old song from the days of the crazy mixed up world of Arthur Brown[ Fire ]
A legend. What a dream it would be to be able to work with and learn from a man like Carl Palmer!
Love this guy, grate artist/musician. And brilliant interview.
Mr. Carl Palmer, Great Musicianship and Commitment to Musical Excellence. I met him in Vegas and went to shake his hand and he told me, "Fist Bump Mate!"Classic.👑🎶
Carl does great interviews and has very good recall of ELP. I like how he mentions John Wetton's death. He has certainly seen more than a few of his contemporary's pass on most notably Keith and Greg. Carl's still going and seems to be in good shape. I guess drumming keeps you lean..
Mr. Palmer is strong in both physical and mental aspects. Keith Moon and John Bonham both had a weakness for alcohol and left us at young age. Carl Palmer has a completely different attitude and turns out to be a survivor. And enjoys life further in time. Reward!
thoroughly enjoyed that, well done SW. Nice to let the guests unwind there stories without interruption...
I really hope that Carl gets the "ELP Legacy" out of his system and records/tours some new material designed to show the penultimate Carl Palmer technique and musicality. He's one of my favorite drummers.
Carl is a brilliant musician. Innovative, fearless and incredibly skilled. I saw ELP once back in 1977 at Cornell’s Barton Hall. They were amazing. Something you never forget. Sad about Keith & Greg.
The moment I heard elp in 1979,I was 5, I never stopped listening to elp, had the pleasure to meet carl (thanks for the personal autograph). I too am a drummer..
Ear to the radio at 13 years old. Karn Evil 9 was getting airplay then. -Hooked for good...
Industry giant and drum legend.
Carl knows we know how good he is. That’s why he never feels the need to blow his own trumpet 🎺. Brilliant.
Great Stuff! Carl truly never got the full recognition that here rightfully deserved, Working overtime, One of our preeminent drummers, He had to bring it every night staying in rhythm with Keith Emerson, Early days he learned cut his teeth as a Jazz Drummer,
Long live ELP!!! 🥀
You are so loved 💘 4 ever!! Best Wishes Carl!
THE Man is going to live to be 150 eye swear, hes got the energy and enthusiazm of a twenty yr, old
I think so , too. I still regret JOHN WETTON. I 'm sure CARL PALMER does, too. ASIA would have continued their original line-up since 2006 , when JOHN WETTON died in January 2017. IMAGINE ASIA with all their members safe and sound still touring for another 15 -20 years from now ...IT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT !
Carl is a true gentleman,
a mentor and inspiration!
I've always valued my time
spent with him, his bandmates
& crew! Have a wonderful Christmas season. Blessed NewYears & see you all in 2018!
Always loved Carl playing drums he was one of my favourite drummers.
Great video, Carl's so informative and enthusiastic explaining everything. Thank you for uploading.
I had the privilege too see him in pa, a dream come true actually, got many autographs, wish I had time to sit down and just chat
Carl Palmer is the Last of the band, He's just doing what he's always done preformed music.
The Show must go on!
Great talk!
Thank you both!
Not only a superb drummer, but an accomplished martial artist as well, which is why he's in top physical shape for someone his age, compared to the rest of his peers from the same era, who all look like they've lost their war with gravity.
FUN FACT - Mr. Palmer's famous 2 tonne all stainless metal drum kit he used for their 75/76 tour in North America, is now owned, or was owned by Ringo Starr himself. The famous video of them playing outdoors in an empty stadium during the early spring time, was recorded at the Olympic stadium in my hometown of Montreal, Que. Canada. The stadium wasn't even fully completed yet, which was supposed to be for the 76 summer games that year. They later played the same stadium to a packed house. The stadium was later completed in the early 80s..
Great interview. Thanks, Mitch!
What a tough interview for Mitch. He had such a hard time getting Carl to open up and talk. (Great interview!)
What a guy..... outstanding drummer.....
Mitch. Thanks so much for your very gracious interview approach. So glad Carl is still hitting them. His story is pretty remarkable in the long view. He was important in the pantheon of 20th Century traps drumming. Controversial and polarizing amongst drummers examining his approach and execution, but certainly did worthy things in a genuinely fearless fashion IMHO. I'm surely glad he did what he did 70'-75'.
Hey Carl.....You ARE a Prog God ;-) Loved you since I was 13 years old 100 years ago!
I feel like I'm about to shed tears everytime I see Carl now
Great Interview and so happy Sweetwater did this. ELP are my favorites and I saw Carls' legacy tour as well as several ELP performances.
Pay attention children because you are watching an absolute legendary percussion PHENOM. There are actually a lot of really good prog metal drummers these days who rival or exceed many great drummers from back in the day but NONE OF THEM have Carl Palmer's hand speed. NONE. The only other drummer who could match him was Carl's inspiration, jazz drummer Buddy Rich.
Great interview. Thank you, Sweetwater.
A totally fantastic guy and drummer. Such a natural guy.
Scott muni was on wnew NY. The best rock station that ever was.
70 Years Old and This Mentally Sharp. Carl Is Amazing. He's Like Drummer Cocaine. But Not on it. Love His Entire Catalog.
I enjoyed that very much. Will watch it again.
Interesting, it's nice to see him, and know that he has maintained his enthusiasm for music. I've always enjoyed Brain Salad Surgery.
Great drummer. He did the best solos. I really like ELP. Three great musicians in one band. True artists. 😀
Met Carl briefly..love ELP always!Fantastic band!Young fellas that toured with him nice dudes!Todd Rundgren good choice !ELP I listened to since a kid!First album bought Tarkus then the rest!Have pretty well everything they did and filmed Karl Ontario when he toured his new band!Carl in my view and others is one of THE BEST drummers in the world no doubt one of the top!If for some of us not the top!Keith Emerson to me also THE pianist and Carl Palmer fantastic vocalist and artist in his field to!ELP where total new experience that hasn't been rivaled to this day!ELP doing Toccata is AMAZING!
What a musical family tree, going back to his great grandmother.
One of the few drummers that BuddyRich let sit in with his band. That says it all
Because he was dating buddy's daughter .. and several have sat in with buddy's band.
@@morbidmanmusic didn't know that
What happened to her marriage to Steve Arnold? She's with the drummer in the alumni band.
I know their son had a substance abuse problem. If Buddy were alive, I think he would have prevented it, after losing Barry Keiner
Fantastic!love you and thank you Carl for all of your music!
What a good guy!
Not only is Carl Palmer one of the greatest drummers to ever walk the planet but he's also a very nice man.
Carl Palmer reminds me of a lot of the English wildcamper You Tubers I watch. He's got an obvious vitality that I don't see in most people his age.
Very proud of Carl, as a Brummie
its very nice to see a man with commen sence !!
Just found that picture of the lights on sticks by doing a search online. Very cool and this is a really great interview with a legend.
What a class act. Looking forward to seeing him in October in Pittsburgh.
WMMR, greatest radio station in the US when I was a kid.
Scott Muni used to be on WNEW when I was kid. He was a fixture there in NY radio.
Carl, you are a legend!!! We love you!!!! You belong in the Hall of Fame!!!!!! For heaven's sake hall of fame committee!!!!
I saw ELP in Indy at Deer Creek….a long time ago (The 90s)…..they were amazing 💚
Carl---sharp as a tack. So nice to see.
Any other 67 year old talk like this- have a memory like this- and this enthusiasm? He is not of this world.
Carl is a truly talented musician, what he is doing for ELP is honorable and Keith and Greg would be touched! He is humble and loves his fans, he also mentions his 2 fellow musicians, he doesn’t think it’s all about him, he is very fair! Having met him at least 6 times, I can say he is the nicest musician I’ve ever met! I got him to sign my lower back and got it tattooed! That is how much I admirw him si ce the beginning of his career
Very Interesting, what an amazing memory Carl has, I can not remember 1/2 names from my past. Wish he would have ask about Cozy Powell, and what led to Emerson using Cozy on that reunion tour and Album.
awesome interview i loved palmers stuff in that bbc documentary "im the drummer in a rock band"
Best drummer alive today and the best since Buddy Rich.
Love to see him play some songs with the Buddy Rich Tribute Band...other well known drummers have.
Not even close. Sounds like you have no idea what happens in the drum world, and let looking in 1979
Carl Palmer is a very sweet man , besides being one of the best drummers in the world. Very nice of him to think of his friends/ former bandmates that have passed away : GREG LAKE, KEITH EMERSON ( from EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER ), and JOHN WETTON ( his bandmate from ASIA ) and pay tribute to them . He speaks so passionately about workshops on singing , playing guitar , that it almost made me think about learning how to play drums !!!
CARL PALMER , you are a wonderful friend to your former bandmates and you have a great sense of humour !
Met him in 1993 at a Circuit City ELP signing/promo. Lake didnt want to be there; Keith was barely awake. Carl was the go-to guy. Very personable, accomodating.
Scott Muni was on WNEW 102.7 FM in New York. WMMR is a Philadelphia FM station
One of the smartest and most accomplished drummers of all time!
Well, not so much. Famous. Yes, amazing.. not so much. Not great tempo, over plays, and has pedestrian parts. Lucky he had keith and Greg.
I like the picture of Wesley Willis in the background :D
Love Carl palmer. Might be in my top 10 list of drummers
Awesome
Great interview by one of my favourite drummers. Not sure why he said that "Rodeo" was from the "Tarkus" album though. I guess it is a testament to the fact that it was soooo long ago.
Carl, it WILL be cool, so keep your shirt on!!
Happy birthday to Carl on March 20
Carl Palmer. master i was see in Chile.
He makes me want to kiss him, I love you Carl❤...
Carl could do film at this point. Say, a James Bond bad guy or something?
Carl is too nice a guy to play a villain. Keith and Greg were gentlemen, as well. Great guys, great group. They will live forever with a little help from Carl.
The only drummer from the "rock" world who could pull off a Buddy Rich type solo!
Actually, one of the only drummers from any genre that can that can do that.
Yes, I have been saying this for years. I also consider him better than Neil Part and John Bonham. He is criminally under rated.
Carl is the best period! His work on the Asia debut album is absolutely amazing.
Who else sees the photo of Wesley Willis in the left hand corner?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ELP FOREVER
Amazing drummer.
He's a serious dude.
An absolute legend 😃
Super fit and super fast. Legend
Who does the music for the Sweet Water minute?
Boy, Carl is a talker for sure. ;-)
Did Carl Palmer play drums for the Chambers brothers? Was he on "Time"?
Carl, I have an admission and an apology
You'll remember Atomic Rooster from Vincent Crane and John du Cann, before ELP.
When I was around 17/18, I met and roadied for a band called Andromeda. As I recall Mick Hawksworth played bass? Andromeda supported 'The Sweet' at a gig at a college for farmers in the middle of nowhere. Ballroom Blitz was okay, but prog-rock wasn't!
Long story short, somehow John du Cann got access to your place and I couldn't resist. A conical bass drum.... what was that all about. Do you remember?
I'm 65 now and retired but playing drums in and around Scotland with a few bands. One day I'm playing Tarkus. You're an inspiration, Carl, and I'm not sorry for having had a brief bash on your drums.
Still, not a good thing to admit to. Rock On!
He's tops I met him n lake at radio city I was v.i.p. I have pics2show of them both
Kind and sweets just like Sonata
AMAZING CLARITY OF MIND.THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL 72 YEAR OLD ROCKER .THANK GOD FOR HIM AS A HISTORIAN OF THE ORIGINAL PROG ROCK GROUP. WHAT A TALENTED INVENTIVE TRIO THEY WERE .
I saw Gregy and Dagi now i se Sony and Carly
This is a whimsical fantasy of mine & I don't know who would agree with me but if the surviving members of Rush play together again, they should enlist drum drumming services of Carl Palmer. So what if Rush is a Canadian band?Carl would be more than up to the task,he's got the energy & the chops & definately has his own legendary style.Think how awesome that would be,how that would sound. He can still do his own projects,he is a marathon man.Anyway, just a rock & roll fantasy of mine.
We, the Originals of that time have become some old now. Anyway.
I ask me whether they have heard or know about Rachel Flowers, an american woman who is blind and plays very awesome all the music of ELP by heart inclusively the parts of the synthesizer (LOL). There a plenty of UA-cams of her performances.
Beste band ooit.
Ik ben al fan vanaf 1970 .
He has a blues shift just like Sonata except She is blue in both sirena and human form
I never HEARD A MORE ARTICULATE HUMAN
I briefly spoke to Carl Palmer on two occasions while getting his autograph after two ELP concerts. He was truly a gentleman, down to earth.Great guy, great drummer.
Yes I attended one his drum clinics in the mid 90s and he couldn’t have been a more cordial gentleman. Signed everyone's item; talked to everyone personally. He let my brother and I take a picture with him at his signing table. Great man
