The charm of the old tinplate is undeniable. Both versions were made as toys to be played with. We seem to be forgetting this as we spend thousands on a single engine whose electronics won't last more than 20 years.
“Thank You “ for your video on the 258. Seeing the two together and hearing about the year they were made. Helped me to figure out when the one we have, was made. Ours is a combination of the two you have. Body style of the 33, but the wheels and nice trim of the 30 and the e lever in the cab. Along with the cars you mention, Baby Ruth. Great video, really enjoy watching your videos. God’s blessing be on you and your family.
It's very interesting how this catalog number was assigned to such dramatically different locomotives. I got a totaled late-version 258, I like the early one far better. I think that one of the main flaws of the later 258 is the paint scheme- perhaps if it were a little more colorful, it might make up for the drop in quality and detail from the earlier model. In the event I get mine in shape again like hope to, I've been thinking about giving it a nicer paint job than the one it originally would have had. Great vid Dave! And what a lovely consist for that 258 to pull.
Nice train and presentation. I typed in "Lionel 258" into the search engine and was pleasantly surprises to find myself in your basement.
Love it! Thanks for coming over!
The 1930 258 is definitely a good looking locomotive. The caboose you choose is one of my favorite prewar ones for colors, trim, and size.

The 30 version is elegant. 33 version is yeoman like. Both are treasures. Thanks for the look Dave.
Some really classic toy trains!
Wow- this was really interesting to watch. Sorry I'm late to the party but thanks for posting. Great video Dave!

I really like the 257,258. I have several of them. They are a handsome rugged looking little engine. I run them more than my 261,262's
