Nice vintage kulintang set . . . for the first portion, the traditional Maguindanaon kulintang ensemble music, Dulawan style . . . 1:02 is Tidtu . . . 3:05 is Binalig . . . 4:15 is Sinulog a kangungudan . . . 6:07 is Kaluntang (traditional played on the luntang, an instrument of graduated wood logs which are hung vertically)
inside Mindanao maguindanawon and maranao ascribed themselves as bangsamoro. when you say ' indigenous" there, it refers to the non-islamized natives numbering to more or less 33 tribes who collectively call themselves " lumad". maranao and maguindanawon is among the 13 islamized tribes who collectively call themselves " bangsamoro. Hope artists will understand more about identities and distinction
Thank you for this very wonderful, highly enjoyable music! I have spent some time in Indonesia and know a tiny little bit of the connection between these two archipelagos; I'd love to know more! It is so great that these woman players continue here traditions! Long may they and their culture live! I hope you and those involved in the video are safe and well since the latest Typhoons? Many thanks again for making the post Ramon!
from what I know, Kulintang music is improvised within a few modes. The modes offer certain restrictions, which I cannot name because I am not a Kulintang player, but BronzeKulintang commented timestamps for each mode, so at least you can maybe see what the different modes sound like. You should ask the performer (TUGMA). I think they can be contacted in UP College of Music. I am just the videographer, and more than that, I have no other relation to TUGMA, the performer.
Mindanao was colonized late by the Spanish and the Muslims there were very fierce towards the Spanish. Unlike the lowlanders of Luzon and Visayans who got conquered by the Spanish in the late 1500's, the Mindanaoan Muslims resisted the Spanish up to the mid-late 1800's and they weren't fully conquered so they preserved their culture very well.
VERY WRONG! Please research more and be careful of everything. To these ladies who wants to be recognized as kulintang players, PRACTICE MORE. MAGUINDANAON and MARANAO ARE NOT INDIGENOUS TRIBE IN MINDANAO.
All of music is an acquired taste. All of art, really. Documentaries are long, some can’t watch a whole one, but people find great information and entertainment in them. This is probably just not your taste.
