For a translucent scultping medium that you can make super thin and still bake, I recommend Cosclay
Oh yes! I really like Cosclay... I finally use some on Dead Eye the Shark. Although I still want to do another fish someday with Cosclay!
At roughly 10mins in you mentioned wanting to do very thin fins. You can do this using CosClay. It blends beautifully with SuperSculpey. It is a flexible clay when baked. As long as you don’t reposition it you can even series bake it like SuperSculpey.

9:50 I saw a dollmaker use uv resin on a little armature of plastic over a thin sheet. She drew the shape of the fin first and then just dripped it out and cured it with the plastic armature being the topedge/connecting point. Put on near the last step though not sure if it'd bake.
And I agree on fish having amazing patterns. Part of why I love catching bluegill is how wild the patterns on them can be :)
For fins maybe you could do what I did when sculpting a mouse character. I wanted thin ears so I soaked a small piece of paper with super glue to stiffen and used that as a base...worked really well!

Btw if you're looking to make thin pieces, try Cosclay! It stays flexible after baking, so roll that clay out as thin as you need. It's a touch sticky, but it's great.

Have you used Translucent Liquid Sculpey?
That is what I use for fins. You can just spread it and bake it as a small thin sheet and then cut it to the size and shapes you want or, you can mix it well with Translucent Sculpey Clay to make a thick paste that you can sculpt details into, like the fin veins and such.
To keep them Translucent when painting, I use oil paints. You could also use a contrast paint or Army Painter Speed Paint since they are Translucent.
Also, you can speed up Apoxie Sculpt cure time by using a heat gun on it. Just be careful not to burn it of course.
You can clean the Apoxie Sculpt out of your brushes easily with alchohol.
Hey, thank you for the tips! Yes, later on I used liquid translucent sculpey for fly wings. But I definitely want to try the paste mixture! Imagine the textures I could do! And I had no idea alcohol would clean off epoxy! I also didn't know about oil paints! I never tried them... because I thought they would make the sculpey sticky and never dry!

Yes, alcohol will clean the Apoxie Sculpt right out, as long as it hasn't cured, of course :) Aves also sells their own solvent that works wonderfully. Alcohol is cheaper for cleaning brushes and tools, but I do use their solvent for some smoothing and feathering.

I am learning so so much from these videos. I'm a user of monsterclay for about two years now, and I love it. Brand new to Sculpy. Very different stuff, and mildly tricky to get my head around. Love your work, too btw. Very insperational!
I so glad my videos are helpful! Sculpey is very different indeed. It doesn't hold up without some kind of armature. Where Monster Clay and Chavaunt can pretty much do anything. What a great video! I’m on the same page as you when it comes to how beautiful fish are. Each one like a beautiful jewel. I just set up an extra room like a small sculpting studio. Have you ever thought of working with clear resin? I can absolutely see this whole piece incased in the stuff, pushing that under water feel even further. And you can do so much with it, adding pigmintation to emulate mirkiness, installing single LED bulbs so it also acts as a little night light? I've even seen people manipulate the surface, giving the impression of wave formations. If you ever do a piece like this one again you should totally try it! It would be so cool.
Thats what my original plan was for this piece! But I chickened out at the last minute! I plan on doing in in the future. But I'll need to do little projects and get a pressure pot and all that stuff!
@@clayformations1638 Honestly, I don't even think a pressure pot is 100% required. Once you keep in mind bubbles, correct ways of pouring, a little bit of patience, you should be fine! It's tricky stuff, and for sure can get a little messy, but DEFINITELY another medium I can see you using greatly to your advantage. With how talented you already are, it would be such an awesome next step!

Love it! Would the flexible metal screen stuff art shops sell in the sculpting section work to make a tiny fin? I’ve seen some artists use it for building out thin wings on dragon sculpts. Seems like you could add little pieces of the screen when building out the armature.

Nice relaxing video. Really enjoyed watching your process and particularly mixing epoxy clay with polymer clay sculpture. I haven't tried this yet but am curious to experiment now! Do you find it adds durability or is there another reason you do this?
Also, to do very thin fins you could either use a pasta machine (or roller or your fingers) to thin the polymer clay into sheets but you will need to ditch the epoxy clay core and just do a metal wire or a thin worm of epoxy at the thickest part of the fin instead. There is also a thin mesh a lot of people use that you could cut and essentially just coat with the polymer clay. This is of course if you feel you have to stick with clay and not try resin or something you can glue on after the piece is baked.
Thank you so much! I mainly use epoxy sculpt for durability of the armature. Just so I have something strong for the polymer clay to go on! However the polymer clay is still quite fragile! I've been doing some experiments with liquid sculpy. I did some wings from my super fly sculpture and it worked! I may try that for fish fins soon!

@@clayformations1638 yeah the fragility is the only thing I really dislike about polymer clay. Some brands and types are better than others but overall I find I have to use different techniques like armatures or mixing mediums to make the pieces protected and less prone to breaking. I've only just started with apoxie sculpt but am liking it. I have tried milliput with good success and green stuff as well. You should try them out to see if you like them even if it's just for some parts of your pieces.

did you make the original base structure with the metal ball?
Sure did! There are wine Toppers that you can get on Amazon where the steel ball comes off. I just glued it to the galvanized wire and put epoxy sculpt over it!

@@clayformations1638 and all of that is safe in the regular kitchen oven as long as you keep the temperature low enough? thank you for the link and reply i was searching for videos on this all night to no avail
@thomasfrom91 You're very welcome for the link! Yes! I was concerned about it myself. I did some research and as long as you keep the temp low there is no danger. I Bake my sculptures at 195 degrees for twenty five minutes and it works most of the time. Of course sculpey is notorious for cracking, so sometimes you have to make repairs!
