    I majored in Chemical Engineering is college and I took an elective called "Pollution Abatement and Remediation." After the second class, I called my mom and told her I knew what I wanted to do in my career and it was an environmental engineer. I went to grad school and got my master's in Chem. E. and did my thesis on lead remediation. I got a job at an environmental consulting firm and quickly realized it was not for me. So I got a job at a manufacturing facility as a process engineer, but still wanted to be in environmental. So I took another job as an environmental engineer at a chemical plant. My dream job. But the plant went through a merger and a hostile takeover, so I left to an automotive plant and am the environmental engineer here. I have every intention to stay here until I retire as they treat me right and I love it here. Plus, I have a pension. I am really happy doing what I do and am at a company that values me for what I do.

    This is true that sometimes it's our perspective that changes and not the situation. Even though I'm only 2 years into my Civil Engineering career I had similar experience where I started question myself and my field at my first job out if school. Two jobs later and now I'm still practicing Civil Engineering doing pretty much the same things but I love it!
    All I need was that breath of fresh air and a new perspective. Now I'm at a point where I get more responsibility and feel like my work matters.

    -AS/ BS in cyber security
    -BS in Electrical and computer engineering
    -BS in Information Technology
    -Bs in computer science
    -BS in applied computing
    -BC in cyber operations
    -AAS in data analytics
    -BS in Business Administration
    -Bs in operations management
    -BA in Business Administration
    -AAS in supply chain management
    I work for Walmart Distribution I currently make $20 hr and don't want to make a career choice that is any less but since they offer to pay 100% of tuition I feel like it would be dumb not to take one.. If anyone has any advice or suggestions on which field to take. Please let me know. I'd like to apply for one of these and start a new career.

But I am having trouble choosing a major, I am a senior in hs rn so I still have a little time to decide, but it’s between Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Sci. I noticed that you said to not do Software Engineering as a major but my school, SJSU, does have an ABET accredited Software Engineering program, if that changes anything? Also it might be hard to switch to CompSci since it’s impacted. So my question was if you think it’s worth trying to switch majors to SE or CS or just stick with my declared major which is CompE? (I could switch to SE a lot easier since CE and SE are within the same college, unlike CS)

    Hi Jake! Great video that gave me insight the differences on the civil eng and architecture major. I wanted to ask you for ur advice on my desired career path and on how I should pursue it.
    I have a deep passion for architecture and massing of buildings but also would like to learn aspects of structural analysis, logistics of a building etc. So, after some research, I decided it would be the best option to opt for a bachelors degree in civil engineering (mainly for flexibility as I heard the job market for architects is saturated at the moment), and then take further courses and graduate studies in architecture. My question is, can I work as an architect with valuable engineering knowledge by taking this study path? As there are some opinions on that I can’t connect between the two and doing a civil eng degree doesn’t qualify me to do further studies on architecture and work in this field.
    So pls share your advice on the best way regarding how I can take this path and to which I hope that its a possible route. Thank you!🙏🙏

    Hey, I was planning to do some projects during the summer. How do you feel about me buying a kit from Amazon or something like that and building it? Would that be a good project and put it on my resume or should I try to create something with an Arduino, even if it won't necessarily be good lol

    I kinda want to do environmental engineering because iv always like taking care of where we live but another reason being my small city of like 100k has 2 big lakes and large mountains that feed those lakes in cali and our lakes supply more than half of calis AG and drinking water but problem is according to Bureau of labor statistics theres only about 40 employed in my area and about 4 annual job postings for environmental engineers so I dont know if I risk it and pray i can land a job after 4 years of school or choose a different path

    First off, I'm a fan of your videos. But I do have a question about an engineering topic that I don't see get covered a lot. That being 4-year Engineering Technology degrees (or Engineering Technologist).
    Currently, I am an Electronics Engineering Technology student with a concentration in electronic systems. I really enjoy my classes and have done countless labs and lab reports thus far. Do you have any experience with Engineering Technology? or do you know people who have Engineering Technology degrees? I would really appreciate your insight. Thank you!

    I'm really having doubts about this engineering journey. Well, I was an ATSEP high diploma holder then I made that mistake of getting EET BS recently instead of EE, and now I'm thinking about my Master's. My job was basically just a technician for like 5 years. Should I go for an EE BS or continue my studying to a Master's? Man, I'm 34 and I doubt I will find a job in that field after getting my Master's or EE sense I almost have 0 real-life experience in that field.

    Hi, this is a question from your pervious video about mechatronics and mechanical job list. When I was picking a major I wanted to pursue I decided to go with Computer Engineering because I love to do coding and I love to build things like circuit boards, computers, etc. But after watching this video I realized this was what I always wanted to do. But I love programing and electrical. And what I also loved about the major of CE was the multiple job opportunities I could Have. So my question is this, Should I double major in CE and ME or are there other options or is double major the only choice I have?

      I'm not a big fan of general engineering. Many environmental engineers have civil engineering degrees. My degree is technically, "Civil & Environmental Engineering" and this way you have more job options than just environmental applications.

    Hey jake, I recently switched into civil engineering with a concentration in environmental, however the major my school has to offer is not yet accredited. My advisor says it should get accreditation in the next couple years before I graduate, but that still gives me the feeling my schools program is underdeveloped. I’ve been looking into transferring to a bigger school with a very well developed engineering program but I’m uncertain about leaving the social atmosphere I’ve built here along with my professors who I enjoy talking with. I know I need to make this decision on my own but I just wanted see what you think since you were the one who inspired me into exploring engineering in the first place. Would I still be ok with a degree from a newly accredited and possibly underdeveloped program or should I transfer to a school with a well known program and start over with building social connections with students and professors.

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  3 роки тому

      Hey thanks for the comment :) wow amazing that I inspired you to be an engineer, thank yoh so much for mentioning that. it’s a valid concern, the ABET part. esp bc environmental engr is one that sort of needs you to be a PE. Or you will probably want it at least.
      What’s your odds of doing grad school? Lots of environmental do grad school. There about the same if not a few more EnvE graduate degrees awarded per year vs bachelors. If you do masters degree that’s accredited, you avoid all issues

    • @nerdicmem5720
      @nerdicmem5720 3 роки тому

      @@JakeVoorhees Right now I’m still new to engineering so environmental was just my choice because my original major was wildlife biology. I intend to stay in environmental but who knows I’m just finishing my freshman year so anything could happen. I would say my plans right now would be to do some interhships and try to get a job with a private or military company with a bachelors and if I decide later I need to get a masters, I will do so. The school I would transfer to supposedly has a 92% hire rate and jobs are usually offered to all engineering students by alumni. So my chances of getting a masters is about 50/50. If I’m happy with the job I have with a BS then I probably won’t.

    • @JakeVoorhees
      @JakeVoorhees  3 роки тому

      I think you will rebuild your social life. The non-ABET thing is too risky to stay where you are now. If you want a real cross section of the odds of your existing school becoming ABET or not, you have to talk to people who are outside of your school and 3rd party. Everything there who is a student or prof is biased to believe they will become ABET 100% so you will not get a great perspective if you only talk to them. 92% hire rate is pretty good. The objectively right thing to do is transfer
