Running amp, SWR, reflect, etc. What to believe?

- This shows that every additional piece of equipment or jumper can change the readings on your radio and meter. I'm not worried about it as I know the antenna is tuned correctly. There's just a lot going on with the additional coax, meter, radio and amp.

Also, as for the radio SWR meter reading different from the external meter while you key the box:
Your watt meter is reading everything after the amplifier, BUT, the radio will be reading the INPUT of the amplifier when you key it.
With the radio showing as low as it is while you key the amp, that tells you the input tune is spot on.
All do multiplex of 6 on jumpers.
It's a class C amplifier.
Watch the video called "does coax length matter"
Without test equipment you're playing a guessing game.
Turning the power down on that radio makes it splatter worse.
I was taught by some heavy hitters a long time ago, take your SWR and throw it out the window.
If you can tune for minimum reflect, while running full tilt, it will be as efficient as it can get.
10-4!
So with 1,000 pep going out, what's acceptable coming back in your opinion?
Me personally, 5w or less reflect. At about 8kw Bird average on my shootout truck, I have about 1/2w coming back.
@@350radionorthgeorgia3half a watt? That's insane.
Yep. It's fully possible. Not easy sometimes, but once you get your feedline, mount(s), antenna(s) and bonding just right, everything falls into place.
On my base for example, my 42' beam has about 1/4w coming back at 1500w average going out.
It usually is a royal pain to get there, but it can be done. 🤘🤘
Hey,, Morning Desert.. I don't know if this will help you out or not.. BUT.. I just had a Hight Drive 4 pill made for me. and we put it all together.. and when checking the SWR.. I asked my teach how come the swr was so high between the radio and the amp.. and he said you can't go by the meter on the radio when running an amp.. to get a proper reading.. you need a meter between the radio and the amp.. and an meter between the amp and the antenna.. to get a ture reading.. I hopw this helps you.. This be Old Mountain,, 121 South East Missouri... Take Care.. 73's..
A meter without an active peak circuit won’t read true peak watts. Usually less than a meter with powered peak circuit. RMS should read pretty close. Input tune of the amp, while on, can cause that meter reading difference. The swr between radio and amp.
Try checking everything while running into a dummy load. maybe use a matcher between radio and amp?
Can you get the jumpers down to 1/4 wave each? That might make a difference. As far as the SWR between the radio and the meter, I'd stick to what the meter is telling me. I have a McKinley that I run into a box. Without the box, the McKinley shows a 1.1 swr across 1-40. When it's hooked up to the box it shows 1.4 with the preamp running, and 1.8 when the amp is running. Yet on 3 different swr meters it's showing 1.3 with the box hooked up and running. I never trust a radio's built in swr meter.
Balance volocity
When sitting the antenna swr, do you set at full power? Lowest? Or somewhere in between?
