I'll never forget going for my first ride in one of these. Dad brought it home brand new from the dealership and put it in the garage on a Friday night. Saturday morning we backed it out of the driveway into the street. "let's see what this thing will do . . ." said Charlie and dropped it into drive. He power braked it, planted his right foot and that Stage 1 smoked both rear tires for about 60 feet until he let up on the accelerator. We looked at one another and laughed like juvenile delinquents who'd just escaped detention. If dad hadn't let up, I think it would STILL be burning rubber! Thanks for rekindling a great memory, Lou!

The opitomy of muscle car! This Buick GS Gran Sport 455 Stage 1 is the perfect example! It sounds aggressive, as well as healthy! That Coronet Gold with black interior look great. Most Stage 1 cars were equipped with an automatic transmission rather than a 4-speed manual transmission. It still gets a decent scratch off the line, which is impressive. At least this Buick GS Gran Sport 455 Stage 1 was outside where you could take it out for a spin. Another great car find Lou! 👍

That burn out was abbreviated, I can tell you that. A buddy of mine owned a 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 for more than 40 years. I can vouch for the low end torque and over-all performance. Further, his car was quite, tight, and solid -- more of a personal luxury performance car.

While some cars today have more horsepower there's not like the tire breaking loose visceral acceleration of this awesome machine. Buick was known as the gentleman's car...comfortable, stylish and lots of power. Well kept Mr.Saladino...and again, well presented by Lou
Thanks guys, for an enjoyable step back in time

1970 was definitely the apex for most models, especially for Buick.Unfortunately for all muscle car lovers it would soon be gone forever. Modern cars may have faster engines but most lack the styling these muscle cars had….Lou’s car is one of the exception to the rule, but are also gone forever.

Had a shared car with my dad. It was a 1971 Buick Centurion convertible and I did the work. Giant land shark with a "mild" 455. Off the line she was a Smokey dog. High end...crazy fast down the center line with the pin buried. Miss that car.

Cool car! I worked on one back in the late-70's. Buick had true performance cars years before this one. Riviera's with dual-quad 425's were definitely high performance cars ! Add the ST400 automatic in 1964 and you really had a winner! Then there were the first GS 400's, nothing to laugh at except for maybe their 2-speed ST300 automatics.
This car doesn't have "Ram Air" without the hood scoops but is more like cold-air induction.
This car would really benefit from an aggressive shift kit in the transmission, and if it didn't have it already, the HD version of the 2nd gear sprag clutch. This car should have gotten scratch or atleast a chirp when it shifted into 2nd under full throttle. That's the way I used to build streetable HP TH400's.

I may be mistaken but I believe 1970 was the one and only production year for high compression 455's that required premium leaded gas. If so, it is a very special year because the GM 455's were detuned to lower HP for 1971 with much less compression.

    • @stephenholland5930
      @stephenholland5930 Рік тому +1

You're correct. The '70 455 Stage 1 had a 10:1 compression ratio and ran on premium fuel. A 510lbft torque monster!

So enjoyed seeing this feature. Whether its a GS 455 or a plain jane Skylark four door sedan, the 1970 through 1972 Buick Skylark based cars are among my favorites. My mother would never consider a station wagon until she test drove a 1971 Buick Sportwagon and she agreed to purchase that Fern Green Metallic wagon as our first ever family wagon (it would be our only wagon). My mother always said that the Sportwagon was refined with a dash of class not present in its competitors. It was a sad day when she traded it in in 1979 on a new Plymouth Horizon when it only had 68,000 miles.

A really nice car. I love the exhaust note, it reminds me of a Harley. IMO, the 1968-1972 GM A bodies were the nicest looking design. Thanks, Lou!

This car is heavy, but not as heavy as it looks compared to the competition. Buick 430-455 engines without accessories weigh around 700 pounds. By comparison, 426 Hemi engines weigh about 843 pounds. That is a lot of weight to take off of the nose of a car, and it helped with performance, handling and braking. 1970 Hemi Barracudas weigh in at 3,880 pounds, which is about what this car weighs. Original Buick build quality was also better than what owners found with Chevrolet and Pontiac offerings. I was not a big GM fan back in the day, but you have to give credit where it is due.

@Sergeant Masson Thanks for the reply. That Buick's, in particular, looks like it would fill up like a bowl if parked in the rain. Obviously, it must have worked because they made lots of them, LOL, but wouldn't it be sucking in water when driving in a heavy rain or through a wash? There're two open holes in the hood...not even a deflector or scoop or cowl on this one. Seems like the drain wouldn't make a difference when moving?

When did the GS start being Gran Sport to people?
I ask because Gran Sport came first, and then Buick dropped the name, going to "GS".

    • @loucostabile

@@loucostabile Not when did Buick Motor Division change the name of their car. That started in 66-67. I mean: When did people start calling every Buick like this a "Gran Sport". Examples: You won't find "Gran Sport" or "Gran Sport 455" in the Buick catalog for say 1970. It was a distinct model. But many people call that GS455 a "Gran Sport". In 1966 a model Model 44617 was a "Skylark Gran Sport" not a GS. But you can find both GS and Gran Sport badges for that year. It's what people- not Buick- called them. Get what I'm saying? When did people think GS was not the model name of cars that were actually named "GS". I did this stuff for 31 years and I never figured out when that started. maybe it started in '66. I don;t know.

You know, I've never before noticed that red/orange striping on the rocker moldings and vinyl roof moldings, on the Stage 1s.
Agree that Buick is at the top of Chevy, Olds, and Pontiac. Oldsmobiles are kind of a cross between a Pontiac and a Buick. Chevy is the basic one you start with, then you move up to the sportiness of Pontiac. Then you move in a more luxurious direction with and Olds while retaining a modicum of sportiness. And finally there's Buick offering all luxury, and preparing you to step up to Cadillac.
