  • The Tanque Argentino Mediano (TAM) has, since the early ’80s, equipped the forces of the Ejército Argentino [Eng. Argentinian Army]. Designed and developed by the West German company of Thyssen-Henschel, the TAM’s history is full of inconsistencies and exaggerations, primarily the fact that it is an Argentinian indigenous tank. Whilst some important components have been produced in Argentina and most assembly took place there, too much of it is dependent on foreign companies to consider it fully indigenous.

a heavier version was planned. named tap. (tanque argentino pesado).
it was planned weight upwards of 40t, using the base of a vca palmaria (a longer tam with an extra road wheel). guns considered were a longer 105 l7, or a 120mm (probably rheinmetal L44)
the turret in the blueprints looked kinda like the one on leo 2a4

'Too bad it was five years too late. 450 CM11s still left a lot of pseudo-M48A3s to be replaced, and the ROCA only had access to the M60A3TTS after the end of the Cold War.

Good work. But still there is a lot of info wrong:
5:30 The TAM project is from 1974. 5 years earlier than 1979.
6:00 The first german company was Henschel, later the Tyssen was introduced in this project.
8:00 The TH-301 was the result of the TH-300 modifications by EA and TH. Argentina adopted the earlier model TH-301-105 as TAM-3/TAM-4 and TH improved its model for further export market (better engine, armour, 120mm gun, etc.).
15:20 The TAM used german guns in the first prototypes, later adopted an M68 version from Israel and the third batch was a local model based in the german design.

@@---ii8hl Armored warfare in WW2 developed all sorts of tactics, over time. This included moving from a position to another. The Argentinians simply tried to commission something affordable. When the Argentinian tank started there existed much better armoured American, Soviet, and British tanks. Think of the M1 Abrams, the T72, and the Challenger 1. They T72, was the lightest of the three, but all of these tanks were much heavier than the Argentinian tank. And trust me, they were all very, very mobile. The M1 had a speed of about 47 miles an hour. Check Wikipedia, for instance. The only tank that was designed to follow the tactic you mentioned was the crappy French AMX. It was not widely exported.

I'ts not true that Argentina had "strong sympathy for Germany". Maybe some some people in the army (which up until 1946 were in charge of the country under a dictatorship) sympathized with them (definitely not all of them though) but, besides that, most of the population sympathized with the Allies. The only volunteers that fought in WW2 did so under the RAF. Argentina had, and still has, a *huge* Jewish community as well.
The "Argentina is pro German" meme is only a meme, or, it was only based on the whims of a Government no one elected. It's true that Perón facilitated the entry into the country of high ranking criminals like Eichmann and Mengele, but he did so secretly, and the overwhelming majority of the country was neutral and leaning towards support for the Allies.

The TAM is vastly superior to the Leopard 1 and M-60s. Is 30 years newer with better Fire Control System, sights, laser range finder and much more power to weight ratio giving better mobility. Non of them can resist a shot from the other.
If the TAM2C is completed, the adding of thermals and digital FCS from the Merkava IV by Elbit will make it the most modern in terms of equipment.
Still can't resist any shot, but it can detect and engage first and from longer distances.
The latest israeli 105 sabot can actually penetrate the Leopard IIA4 of Chile in the frontal hull at 3km, not the turret though.
Fun fact, the 105 mm have better accuracy and better energy retention over 2 km ranges. The 120 mm is more powerful, but the accuracy drops exponentially at over 3 km while the 105 can still have less than 40 cm of deviation at over 4 km, the 120 mm gives a 1 meter deviation at over 4 km.
Under 2 km the 120 punchs harder, over 3 km the 105 can actually keep its penetration capacity while the 120 mm loses energy fast.

@@reserva120 So resorting to stereotypes and insults?, way to argument, clear character show off.
None of those updates you speak of have been issued to south american Leos and M60s. Both tanks are at least 20 years older than the TAM with 1960s FCS against a german 1980s (basically the TAM has the same technology in the FCS as the Leopard II A3).
None of those updates allow the tanks to resist a 105mm gun shot. They are add on armor packages against HEAT warheads.
The TAM is receiving an upgrade with the Israeli Merkava IV systems by Elbit.
The M60 is an inneficient tank overweight with low power to weight ratio and poor mobility with short range and slugy. The Leopard I is almost the same as the TAM, a little more armored, less engine power, older systems.
The TAM has competed in Perú against them, outclassed them in every aspect. The M60 was found very unreliable while the TAM has been driving in test from subantartic temperated, to template plains, to jungles to high mountains and deserts, uninterrupted without failures. The M60s couldn't get through a a mud field, couldn't start at 4000 meters mountain ranges and did 25% of the range of the TAM or Leopard with more fuel in the tanks.
