- NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 9, 2015) The guided-missile frigate USS Kauffman (FFG 59), departed Naval Station Norfolk today for the ship's final deployment and will operate in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of responsibility. Kauffman's final deployment also marks the last scheduled deployment by any Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigate and in September, the ship will be the last operationally-active frigate to decommission. (U.S. Navy video by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Darien G. Kenney/Released)
Watching this brings back a lot of memories. I did my time on USS Stephen W Groves FFG-29. Sad to see all of the FFG's are gone but I suppose the Navy has to move on to the future.
We hate and swear and cuss at them but sailors have a love of their ships maybe not the day you leave but at some point you realize how much you grew and the friends you made!
Dont ever put your hand inside the mooring line against the bollard. Even if your just singling up. I'm not even a boatswains mate and I know that. Geez
Poignant I remember waiting for my dad to return from cruises at dockside. My mom was so beautiful and happy my dad picked me up and carried me on his shoulders. I am always touched by these scenes. Salute.
I served onboard her from 2007 to 2012. Some of the best and worst years of my life. Every one made me better.
Had great times on ffg-15. Alot of buffing hallways but ready for liberty call.
my old command, god bless her
I was a proud member of FFG-15 USS Estocin. Too bad to say goodbye to the ffg's.
2:36 ... a sad but beautiful image, serving to remind us that sacrifices are not made only by those who deploy.
I remember one of my friend Jeffery Morris in FFG- 59. I’ll be happy to hear fr. him again after many years ago.
Actually the last deployment for a frigate was the USS Simpson FFG 56 the ship my dad served on.
LOT'S Of Memories! I used to be onboard the RMD FFG-60.
Hey me too. And the Ingraham. Woohoo
RIP FFGs.
@vzdorr b There's still at least an FF in service... Constitution : )
HSL-46 Det 1 Med 93. Great cruise.
I sure miss the old frigates
Sad, from a FFG-16 Clifton Sprague Plank Owner. Good ships.
Miss this ole' girl... Wish I could man the auxiliary watch one more time..

So weird to see these ships without the Mk 13 missile launcher on the foc’sle.
There goes my baby! 10-15 🇺🇸
The Special K, Haze Gray And Underway!
Mandolin Jackson what is the number one breakaway song?
Goodbye old Lady, you served well. I served aboard Kauffman from April 91 to March 93. Took her to the Gulf and spent a wonderful time dodging mines in the NAG. Only non-mine countermeasures ship to locate mines without hitting them during the summer of 91. Won the 6th Fleet ASW Award during our transit to and from the Gulf by finding Victor III class subs in the Med no one else could find. Commissioned the USS Doyle (FFG-39) in 83 and deployed to the Med in 85 with the first LAMPS MK III det deployed in the Atlantic. HSL-42 Det 2 "Cable's Crew", flew the hell out of that bird during the deployment.
I'd love to connect I was onboard the kauffman 2007-2012 Sonar tech would be great to hear those stories
During my 4 years in I did 2 Med cruises. First on Kauffman 93 and second was Doyle Med 94. Both with the HSL-46 detachments. Wouldn’t trade one minute of my Navy time.
Wow! From Beautiful Trans from Manila
I served aboard the USS Reid FFG-30.
the navy changed the uniforms sense this vid was made
How long ago was this ship commissioned for service?
1987
Sad that they are gone
She's a beautiful old girl!
Her sister ship, the USS Simpson was the last United States ship still in active service to have sunk an enemy vessel.
Spent 2 yrs of my life there sad to see her go
@Gary McMichael Its about as fucking great as you are and i hope you have a real nice life
I did 2007-2012 with her
Is it common practice to have an external pilot onboard for naval departures in the US for US warships?
Yes
Yes
Yes, it is common to have a pilot whenever you arrive or depart a port even overseas. Local pilots have extensive knowledge that would not necessarily be available in the port guide. Captain is still responsible for the ship.
Yes for outgoing and incoming foreign ports

Last one to the EM Club is a rotten egg.
My command from '99 to '03.

@@starbrown6228 I dunno... that name sounds vaguely familiar.
Without their Mk13 GMLS, the Perry was so horribly gimped that you may as well have just sold them to the puddle pirates.
We weren't fighting ships and countries anymore. We did drug ops, piracy ops, asw, foreign relations, and escort duties.
My time on kauffman we didn't need the launcher it was outdated. Still found and won multiple asw exercises with foreign navy's, trained alongside many finding multiple drug runners, pirate motherships, hosted for foreign relations and connected with 3rd world civilians... I only served 5 years with her but the kauffman was much more then a harpoon launcher unless your writing a Michael bay movie...
Served aboard USS Crommelin FFG 37 when she was out of Pearl. As an ST, I've got to say I wasn't a big fan of the platform.
IM waiting for the commisioning of the USS Noah Mizrahi to go kick butt somewhere
Its hard to see the old girl without Stir and the mk 13, they should have just replaced the mk13 with a VLS system and kept them. Once they got rid of the missile launcher it became nothing more than a glorified coast guard cutter.
Please donate it to the Philippines

Don't worry little lady, "Uncle" Rick will be stopping by later.

Wow, finally a Jewish Frigate. mein gott
floating waste of money.
@Gary McMichael What?? Gary, you sound real smart using the same lame comments over and over. You must have been as useless as this class of ships were.
I read all the comments except the one in another language everyone had positive comments but you. I still miss my submarines and check in on my Reactor compartments with Giggle maps and they’ve been gone for almost 30 years
Not when they were built. Upgrades were cut from the budget that were greatly going to make them even better. SM-2 capable, VLS replacement for MK-13 launcher, Fire Control upgrades, etc. Ships get old and have to be replaced eventually, but these were goods ships in their day.
I served 5 years on the kauffman. She did her job and we did ours then some. Both the best and worst years of my life.
Since everyone will be a internet tough guy ill leave it be but if we met face to face I'm sure we could find common ground somewhere over a beer. But just trashing her won't pass in any sailors book.
