great timeless flick. great story and superb acting ! gotta love Mickey here! along with Alan Bates, Bob Hoskins and Sammi Davis- this is one for eternity.
My late father worked for the British Army and we lived in N.Ireland during the troubles. Even despite the politics of this film, it was sweet and Mickey Rourke looked good then.
I always found this film interesting as this could of been a classic film like Mike Hodges's masterpiece Get Carter but as the producers had taken the film off him in the editing process. The film is flaw in places but it not a bad film. I wish MGM will give a director's cut..
There is a reason why this was so underrated. The main character was supposed to be this specifically ethnic over-the-top hero/anti-hero caught in a giant mess...not unlike Tony Montana in Scarface. The problem was, Rourke played it low-key, which was not a bad acting choice, but it made the movie as a whole lack that extra spark that makes a movie memorable. Which is a shasomeme really because it had a great scrip, direction and supporting cast.BUT soemtimes you need somebody like G.Oldman.
Actually you got that wrong. It's was the producers of Samuel Goldwyn who had the problem with the Irish accent. They were the one that muck up the edit of the film interfering with Mike Hodges' vision. I like to see the director's cut of this film.
I disagree of it being the worst movie and Mickey's performance. It a flawed film that looks a mess from editing. Maybe with Mickey Oscar nomination this film could get the director's cut release and with the original composer John Scott music.

This is one of my favorite movie of Mickey Rourke
Loved those 80s films before the internet where the only info you could get was from movie magazines!
Havent seen it since I was small. Would love to see it all again. Well done to who added this.
Arguably one of the finest films of the decade.
5/5
This is the 1st movie I saw starring Mickey Rourke. I was surprised to learn later that he was American.
Brilliant and captivating movie.
Is that you Martin ?" Now who the fuck you think it was?" says Rouke in his first line of the movie
This is the best film ever.
My favourite scene is when Martin Fallon (Mickey Rourke) smoke in front of Jack Meehan (Alan Bates). Rourke is just cool.
top film, top acting, top story

Best movie ever from Mickey Rourke, hurts deep in heart, very sensitive.
one of the best for sure...
I like to see the director's cut of this film.
His accent's not so bad in this, a lot better than many of the horrible hollywood attempts at Irish accents!!

I agree with the low-key approach not working here. Although the supporting cast were very good. Can't get much better than Alan Bates.

It's vicars for the C of E, priests for the catholics, nothing to do with accents.
Did you go to Paddy's Wigwam ?

Ebert basically trashed this film for reasons i can't wrap my head around as to me it's a classic and not just due to it's age..
Well I hope you got a clue?
