SGURR NAN GILLEAN - Isle of Skye - Comparison. Views or Clag?

  • Here's a few blasts from the past. This film shows the absolutely awesome Sgurr Nan Gillean South East ridge ( known as the tourist route ). Although technically easy, its also very exposed for a normal route. This gives it a feel of a both bigger mountain, and a harder one. The walk in is not a simple short walk either, its not Tryfan!
But, all things considered, this has to be one of my favorite mountain scrambles . Why? I've no idea. Maybe because of where it is, and the absolute unbeatable views of this end of Skye.
But the reason for this film was not just to combine two old films, but to show the difference some clag/fog/cloud can make to a route.
Like I suggest in the film. I think I actually preferred the feel of it in the fog. This particular route isn't so easy to get lost. The ridge is relatively narrow, and you just stay as near to the crest as you can until the summit. But imagine if this were a wide complicated buttress!
Anyhow. I hope you enjoyed the quick overview in the two conditions. Check out my films for other #skye #isleofskye and #scotland gems.

Is that the tourist route John? I did Gillean by pinnacle ridge. There where a couple of abseils and I couldn’t see a bloody thing. Great memories. Thanks for sharing. ATB
