    Strongly suggest you place a fuse located at the battery terminal, 1 - 2 ampere should suffice. Any short in the hirose connector is likely to cook your wire. A 12 volt 5 AH PB battery can deliver more than enough current to completely melt 26AWG wire!

      Excellent suggestion. I agree 100%.

    Thanks for sharing. Pro tip: when screwing the Hirose shell down onto the pin housing, if you plug the pin housing into your unit (without a battery of course) it is super easy to safely screw the shell snug without twisting the pins or the wires.

    • @RexRoach
      @RexRoach  8 років тому +2

      That's absolutely correct. Great tip. I used that method to un-screw the core from the shell when making the video, but that part may be on the cutting room floor. Thanks, Scott, for sharing.

    F1 refers to the connector lug size. F1 = 0.187” lug, F2 =0.250” lug. That matters for what some people might have on hand or what size is currently installed on the UPS they would ultimately go in.

    I like your approach to powering your audio rig with a lead acid battery. Here is an alternative option however. You can use a Anton Bauer Gold Mount D90 battery that has a Power Tap connector and with the use of a Power tap to Hirose cable, you have a 12 Volt battery feeding power to the Zoom F8 or F8n recorder without needing to mess around with solder or sleeve mount attachment points. Of course your battery is $24 whereas an Anton Bauer battery will run around $299 each, but the savings in labor may be well worth it in the time spent to build a hybrid cable from scratch. Just a thought.

    • @RexRoach
      @RexRoach  5 років тому +1

      That's an excellent point, Andrew. If I were a professional, full-time A/V person, I would definitely use the Bauer battery, not only for labor savings, but for quality, reliability and compactness. Furthermore, there are professional chargers for the Bauer batteries that will run circles around the little wall-wart with gator clips unit that I use. For me, the battery is almost never needed, so this budget route made sense. Also, being a toy train lover, soldering on small parts is an everyday thing. I very much appreciate your taking time to comment and share this excellent advice.

    Thanks so much Reg...after going through 32 batteries in one day of shooting in the hills using 2 booms and 2 radios on phantom and long dialogue takes I was desperate for a solution....this seems like it. Steve

    I got an email from Jared Zecchel who wondered if you could simply plug the same battery into the 12v input on the back of the F8. That would mean using a simple barrel connector instead of the more expensive and difficult to use Hirose. Well, that's exactly what I did to begin with and it worked. So why did I change to the Hirose? First and foremost (let's be honest here) the Hirose is very cool and gorgeously high tech. It also makes a much more reliable connection. The main reason I went to the extra trouble was worry that the F8 would only function over a narrow voltage range when using the 12v input on the back. The side connection (Hirose) is good for a wide range of voltages and can be programmed to let you know the status of things. I'm not so sure about the connection on the rear.
    HOWEVER...it did work and I think it would be well worth trying for anyone who finds the Hirose option to be more trouble/expense/time/etc. than they wish to spend. Just hook it up and connect as many mics as you have and start recording. See how long it will go and what happens when the battery voltage drops to, say, 10v or less. I suspect it will just keep on working. On the other hand, it may shut down at 11v.
    Let us know if you try this.

    • @giovannispinotti
      @giovannispinotti 6 років тому

      I'm speaking out of memory on this, but I believe you can manually set a shutoff voltage, so that when the voltage drops below that, the F8 shuts off. I'm wondering how much longer one of those big batteries would last once it goes below, say, 10v: would't they be on the brink of exhasustion?

    • @SoundSpeeding
      @SoundSpeeding 5 років тому +1

      Definitely the hirose input is the much much MUCH safer option, wouldn't recommend the DC barrel input

      Thanks for letting me know. I've updated the battery link. It's a PS-1250-F1. The cable is Canare microphone cable L-2E5 which is sold by the foot at Markertech. I also found it sold by the foot at RedCo Audio. www.redco.com/Canare-L-2E5.html
      Please take note of the added 1 amp in-line fuse in the sources. Put a fuse in the positive line.

    • @RexRoach
      @RexRoach  7 років тому +1

      The inner barrel is threaded into the outer housing. As Scott Beatty pointed out in his comments, you can plug the Hirose into the F8 and that will "capture" the inner barrel. Then you can really twist on the outer barrel to separate the parts.
