React to Nigel Owens, legendary openly gay Rugby Union referee, he was hard and tough with men twice his size but caring and funny at the same time❤❤❤❤😂😂
You always knew that if Pierluigi Collina was refereeing a game, you knew it would be a fair game. The respect that fans and players had for him was unreal. Great video. Thanks.
that. when you see him you knew, no messing around. and the thing is, in this part of the world, 1/3 of the games were set up. Mediterranean and Balkans. lands of the set up games.
This referee was also the only one who had the respect of the fans. If he blew the whistle, fans accepted it. You never really asked yourself whether he made the wrong decision when a whistle came. They didn't say "that wasn't a foul" but rather "that must have been a foul" or at least they waited until the replay slow motion. He has also earned this respect from the fans. So much so that we were at least unsure of what we had just seen,
Feared is not a word many people would associate with Nigel Owens. Respected yes. Collina just didn't put up with the s*** most of his colleagues seem(ed) to.
Thank you for showing this video. Pierluigi Collina is Legendary, he helped the game to be enjoyable, he is a one off, no one has come anywhere near him since. Take care you two, love to both.
If you're doing refs, you've got to look at one of the most famous (now retired) rugby refs, Nigel Owen. Video title is - 10 Minutes of Nigel Owens being Nigel Owens | The Referee Grand Master. Very different in rugby, you can't scream and shout at a ref, it won't be tolerated.
I'll second this. Nigel Owens is a legend. Would love to see you guys react to him. He's very funny. Collina was an equally no nonsense ref, though I'm not sure he's as funny as Owens, though I'll laugh harder at the Italian jokes because, self preservation 😂
@@carlgibson285 I think the idea that Germans aren't funny is more of an Americanism, born out of Hollywood and the "Knock knock? Whos there? WE WILL ASK ZE QUESTIONS!" and there is some truth in that stereotype, in that German humor is very obvious, there's no double entendre in German comedy, it's very slapstick and in your face. The stereotype about Germany in Europe in general is that they are the weirdest mix of Totally rule bound people, and also if meth was a society. German people are seen as you either get two extremes, you either get the totally rule bound, logical to a fault, bordering on autistic or you get the exact opposite extreme of raves and drugs. Germany has been a country of extremes since the 1800s atleast and their humor reflects that. It is kinda true what Cristoph Waltz said about the difference between German and Austrian humor, German humor lacks grace, and imo it's better for it, and the Austrians are just weird, straight up "stuck on a mountain for 80 years" weird.
I've been following football for over 40 years and, to this day, there has never been a referee that commanded so much respect. Any huge games that might have proved difficult, for some reason, Pierluigi was your man.
Legend has it, he originally auditioned for a part in the film, “the hills have eyes” but the crew thought he was too scary for the part, so he took up refereeing instead
The greatest referee in the history of the game. He took no $h!t from anyone regardless of their fame or status. He was tough but incredibly fair and you could tell he loved the game. A true legend of the sport who every football fan in the world recognised (for the correct reasons) and respected.
It's pretty rare for referees to be known by name outside the country they normally referee in, it's incredibly rare if not unique for a referee to be both globally famous and also globally loved - and not for no reason, his reputation is built on being both absolutely fair and almost always correct.
He was.....without a shadow of a doubt the finest referee ever to grace the game. The respect he got both on the pitch and in the stands is unparalleled. A true genius in his field. 👏👏👏
I would say there are 2 officals that have such credit and acclaim for football it is him any fan of football has him as best referee , Rugby Nigel Owen. They both are known for their consistency, no nonsense, players respected them.
Despite being Scottish I followed an English premier league team around Europe as well as at home (won't say which one but it's obvious if you know), and even the most biased fans respected his decisions, he was so well known for being firm but fair, a true legend indeed as refs are usually hated by at least half the crowd in every game.
There is a Rugby Union ref that I'm sure you would enjoy watching, a legend of the sport and respected by everyone Nigel Owens. There are several videos out there, "10 mins of Nigel Owens being Nigel Owens" had se great clips.
I would recommend reacting to Nigel Owens. A Welsh rugby referee who while small would tell the biggest rugby players off with whit and keep control of the field with a sense of humour as well
That was the most amazing referee. He was honest, respectful but also demanding, also had great sense of humor. He was loved and respected by both players and spectators. Legend. He did not punish anyone unnecessarily. Some who messed up a bit, he called them aside, gave to them his piercing look and laid some words on them and those players pulled their game together. When he did punish someone, it was always for the right reason. He was also not afraid of anyone - no matter how big of a star the player thought he is, he judged everyone equally and if someone messed really up, he sent them out no matter who they were.
Its worth saying that there are lots of referees with same sense of integrity and determination to be impartial and fair but what Colina was, far more than any other referee, was _correct_ in his decision making. It was astounding how often he made the right call, even in difficult circumstances. He saw practically everything and could accurately judge a situation based on just a fleeting glimpse. That's not something that is easily taught and even the most well intentioned referees can't just acquire that ability. He had a unique talent that goes beyond his incredible qualities as a man.
When it comes to referees Nigel Owens (Welsh international rugby referee) has to be the most respected and loved rugby ref of all rime, some of his quips during the game are comedy genius, so much so that there is a UA-cam video compilation of him speaking to the players 😂
Hi just watched your reaction to pierluigi collina as Manchester United fan I took my dad to a local pub to watch that match, and it was a night I will never forget
You always knew there would be no match rigging no stupid decisions you would sigh with relief at the start of a game if he was refereeing....one hell of a ref a true legend of the sport.
A true gentleman that no one would ague with. A real testament to the man in 2006 euros champs he appeared on a British. Football comedy parody show called “They think it’s all over” as a character called the coleaner dressed in a pinny over his ref kit and cleaning the set with a buster a true hero.
Well respected globally which is impressive for a football referee as footballers, their clubs and their fans are so tribal. Agree with the other comments on here about Nigel Owens, the most famous Rugby Union referee. He was also well respected globally but also brought a lot of humour to his refereeing, you should definitely react to one of the Nigel Owens montages.
Swithing shirt with a ref is as crazy as a ref being on the cover of the best(?) Game almost ever. Still both unbeliveble. My top 12 in football all time. That is including 2 goalies, 4 CB, 2 inner mids, 2 trequartistas, 2 9's and 1 ref. That is the players/ref i think is set above all else
It was mentioned briefly in the video, but seriously consider the fact that he had to deal with FIFA age-dependent mandatory retirement when many in the sport would have happily seen him continue for as long as he wanted. And yes, adding my +1 for you to consider reacting to Nigel Owen, the legendary rugby union referee.
There was something about the way the narrator pronounced "legend" or "Lazio" and his overall accent, that sounded very portuguese to my ears. I went to check where he's from and bingo, he is! 😄 Another great portuguese YT channel, just like General Knowledge and Hillclimb Monsters.
There‘s quite a few rules that weren’t in the books until Collina made them up on the spot. Like showing cards to people on the bench. A German referee podcast I used to listen to called them Lex Collina.
Love your video. Pierluigi Collina is a legend. He can't never bribe or involve in corruption. He's really passionate with his job as a referee. Btw, as a Man Utd fans, you should react to the UCL final 1999 that has been mention in this vid. It's really dramatic. If you want to just search " MAN. UNITED 2-1 BAYERN: #UCL 1999 FINAL FLASHBACK ". Please watch more football(soccer) stuff. I really enjoyed both of your guys reaction....
You should check out ex footballers reminiscing about Brian Clough, very funny 😅😅😅! Mark Crossley has a number of stories and Dean Saunders has a great story too, very funny. There is also an interview with Clough by Clive Anderson, so you get a direct idea of this man. They are all on UA-cam. All the best
Thanks for doing this my peeps. There are so many other stories around football that you might be interested in. I think the Munich air crash might interest you- have your tissues ready though, it is heartbreaking- I am bias though as I am a proud Manchester United fan.
Pierluigi Collina was that good, there was talk that English football wanted to make him a ref. He is what Nigel Owens is to Rugby Union. Two of the very best.
Pro Evo 3 - good job Pierluigi! I've often thought a soccer game where YOU are the referee should have come out by now - and you are judged on your performance to see whether you can go from a local playingfield (you get to choose the country the game begins in) - all the way to the World Cup Final Maybe such a game has never been made because it would be an incredible feat of software engineering - MUCH more than all of the lastest 3D football games The virtual players would sometimes need to have brawls with each other - managers would sometimes hurl abuse as they strayed outside of the technical area There would need to be racist chants from the crowd, and an ethnic player leaving the field in disgust - prompting you, the ref, to choose whether to abandon the match It would have to be an 18-rated game! It would also be a very difficult game - way more difficult than any other football game But it could be an AWESOME game! :) [if done well]
PierLuigi collina what a legend, growing up in Scotland football is life like most European countries we loved this guy folk would say to me about being his child as I have those light blue eyes which some Ppl describe as a bit scary lol but ye when he was angry with that cold piercing stare right through you he was in control of his games alright..
Did you see all that Orange? That's my team, the Dutch National team. If we heard he would be the referee, we all sighed from relieve. Finally a great referee! We Dutchies have had many bad referees in the past when it came to the World Final or the European final. But with him we knew he was impartial. The best referee ever!
Nigel Owens. Most respected ref in rugby.Openly gay but he could handle guys twice his size in a softhanded way. Some times funny as well. There is great videos of him on youtube.
Hey mike and jess i would love it if would react to Sir Tom Jones a famous Welsh singer from the sixties and very famous in las Vegas singing with Peter Donegan on the Uk version of the voice from a few years back, love this mans voice from childhood ❤️
At 4.50 he talks about Lazio - I won't comment on that story but just direct you to do research - the hard core ultras have friendships with fans in other countries mostly along political lines. One of their friendships is with Levski of Sofia Bulgaria, a team who also play in blue. When my team played against them in Rome, some of our naughty boys were invited to stand amongst their fans in the Curva Nord as friends rather than enemies - there are many other similar stories where footballing animosity has been put to one side. When in Glasgow to play Celtic, they were directed to safe bars and locations by fans of Rangers who play in blue and are mortal enemies of Celtic - there is rather a strong theme of teams in blue in different countries being on fairly friendly terms, but that could be the subject of an entire video.
The players knew they couldn't get away with their usual tricks when Collina was the ref... He knew they were going to do something before they did 🤣 Not many refs were respected, but he was of a different level and class altogether
just think a referee that was more famous than the top football/soccer players, for his integrity, his look etc... i remember when Pierluigi Collina was refereeing a game, you knew it would be a fair game, I remember he could see fouls that the public could only see on slow motion replays, and this was before the VAR (Video Assistant Referee)

For the Pistols video, it's on the same channel as you were on under the title "The CRAZIEST Football Team Of All Time".
You always knew that if Pierluigi Collina was refereeing a game, you knew it would be a fair game. The respect that fans and players had for him was unreal. Great video. Thanks.
As somebody who only really watched important games back then it's incredible how often I would notice his bald head.
that. when you see him you knew, no messing around. and the thing is, in this part of the world, 1/3 of the games were set up. Mediterranean and Balkans. lands of the set up games.

He was an outstanding referee. Commanded the respect of players and fans alike.
by far the best and most respected ref weve ever seen in the sport
The GOAT. Sei grande Collina.❤1🇮🇹

@@theStonedAgeGuy at one time Nigel Owens did stand up comedy that's why he could be so funny.
Harold "Dickie" Bird, a cricket umpire (referee), stands out to me as being totally unbiased person. A bit of a legend. 😁
He was also a massive character and was welcomed anywhere even well after retirement.
national football associations make the referees small gifts before friendly matches. Germany once gave him a hair dryer.
Germans don't get enough respect for their sense of humour. I have a few German friends and they're all hilarious.

In Collina you had the best referee and knew you could never questio his decision. Legend of the game

Maybe such a game has never been made because it would be an incredible feat of software engineering - MUCH more than all of the lastest 3D football games
The virtual players would sometimes need to have brawls with each other - managers would sometimes hurl abuse as they strayed outside of the technical area
There would need to be racist chants from the crowd, and an ethnic player leaving the field in disgust - prompting you, the ref, to choose whether to abandon the match
It would have to be an 18-rated game!
