  • Why I chose to build a 2x72 belt grinder. This may not be for everyone but if you're needing a 2x72 I highly encourage you to investigate the DIY option.
Caveat: Yes, I do know the grinder does more than spin the belt around. There are other factors, how it tracks, how powerful the motor is, etc. All those things can be tuned and built into a DIY grinder! My point was not to say high-end grinders don't have more bells and whistles but to encourage those who are contemplating the idea of building their own grinder. Thanks for watching!
    BG272 Plans at Dan's website: dcknives.blogspot.com/p/2-x-72...
Some really great commercial options: Coote, Ameribrade, Reeder, Travis Weurtz, KMG, Bader, Northridge, etc. I'm probably forgetting a bunch!
I have a build list for the cost of my grinder in the files section over in the DIY Group on FB / 1559533911008695
Sorry about the weird video format, it went a little funny on the edit/upload but I think the message I wanted to relay is still view-able. =)

Thanks Derek for putting this out there. I hear from people every day and have from several thousand since 2014 that are getting what we are putting down. Hope you and your family are staying well during this crazy time.

Love the practical approach to thinking about belt grinders. Preach it, bro!

“Grinder snobbery”. Hahahahaha. I love it. You speak the truth. You have helped me decide to make my own tools again.

Awesome! I love making my own tools but I completely understand that there are some people who just want to get to work.

Good vid. You raise some very valid points. I'm not a knife maker, but I've wanted a 2x72 belt grinder for awhile now and I had been squirreling away steel to make one. Before I could get all my parts together I had stumbled on a Craigslist ad which turned out to be a Burr King knife makers 2x72 belt grinder. After handing over $200 I had my first 2x72 grinder and I know I couldn't build one for that amount. It's 45 years old and runs great. At some point I will use up that steel to build me another belt grinder.

Built several of these from Dan's design. Simple , effective tool. Less than $30 to do the frame.
    Great video!

@@derekmelton starting on one today for a fellow forge group member.
This will make I think 13 I have built now. Not all Dan's design. I built mine different, but same basic principles.
I use gas struts for belt tension and use a swingarm setup for tension and tracking.

Well said, good video. Although I do appreciate some of the newer grinders on the market, and would absolutely love to own one, the $$$$ for my "hobby" is just not there. As is the case for most of my tools, they have to be really cheap or I make them. Every time this topic comes up I'm always reminded of some of the great things being made with hand files or cheap Harbor Freight 1" grinders or 2x42 Craftsman's like the one I bought years ago, and still use. You just got to learn to use what you've got and work your way up, especially when starting out.

Awesome insight Derek! I too am a part of that FB group and see you posting frequently. I initially was going to build the exact grinder and my Dad got the metal for it. I’ve since gone from almost completing a Jeremy Schmidt build (I will one day) to buying a Sayber OSG plasma cut kit from a fb’er. Started on it about 2 weeks ago but haven’t had the chance to get back on it due to my work. I believe you can attest that the majority of your funds for a project go toward a VFD and Motor. For anyone who does their research and knows a good commercial grinder with all the bells and whistles will run at least 3K. Anywho, love your work and hope to one day be able to take a class!

R Wilche1 Man, that Sayber is on my list, I want to build one someday! Jeremys plans are also really popular, that’s a great grinder too. I was able to get a VFD/motor combo for under 400$!

Great encouraging video. I built my own without plans. It was a great learning experience. Ok once you buy a VFD, three phase motor, Aluminium tooling arms, contact wheels and drive and tracking wheels etc. it is not cheap any more. Everytime I use it I feel happy to know I built it...

    • @derekmelton
      @derekmelton  4 роки тому

Paul van Zweel Yeah. The VFD and 3 phase motor make it more expensive but even then, I had less than $750 in mine. Which is probably half what most end up putting into a comparable commercial model and I stand by my statement that the expensive grinders just don’t grind any better than a WELL made diy model. ;)

@@derekmelton I agree. I have a metal lathe and made my tracking wheel and the flat platen small wheels as well as all the small wheel attacment stuff. Probably spent a similar amount to what you did. If you spend it over a period of time while building, it is less noticable...

    Well said!!!
I hope you don’t get a lot of “hate mail” from this video but you make very valid points!!! I built my own 2x72 just bc I didn’t have the $$$ to buy one and it turned out just fine. So, again we’ll done!!!👍🏻👍🏻

If I get hate, that’s fine. I believe in DIY tools a LOT.
