So many great ideas in this video, particularly the point around peer reviewing. It’s so great to be able to show students how authors “craft” their work (drafting, editing, reviewing etc). I don’t know of any published authors that went straight to print with their first draft!

Hey Susan! This was a terrific video-are there plans for a second grade writing formula?

Thank you, Jennifer! So I used the term "first grade" writing formula for the alliteration of it, but I made the mini-course with applicable tips for Kinder, First, and Second grade teachers!

Hi Susan. I like the idea of providing already correct passages. Can you share how you would teach writing to completely remote first graders through recorded videos on Seesaw? There is no possibility for student to student interactivity for writing at this time. It is all me and I can send items back with recorded messages about revising and editing. Checklists are still overwhelming for many of my lower EL students. We do Zoom for morning meeting and math but can't use breakout rooms. I have 20 minute small reading groups in Zoom. Each group meets twice a week for about 20 min. Thanks for your ideas!

Can we get the editing checklists somewhere?

Is the 1st Grade Writing Formula not available as an independent course at this time?

Do you have any recommendations for teaching editing remotely in 2nd grade? I give feedback and the children have an editing checklist to refer to, but without partner time, it’s been challenging.

Hi Janina, maybe using pre set breakout rooms in pairs could be helpful. TEAMS & ZOOM has this feature. If TEAMS doesn’t have it yet, you can create channels and assign students there too. In both cases you can go in an observe 😊

I do break out rooms when I have a para, but I’m not allowed to put students into them without supervision.

      That’s a disadvantage 😕

Where can we get those model passages?

What genre of writing does your 1st grade writing formula target? Or is it more ways to fine tune writing no matter the genre?

Great question! The First Grade Formula is definitely all about ways to get the most from your students' writing regardless of the genre! Within the SJT Writing Club, I have specific genre-based lessons and ideas, but the course mentioned in this video is for any type of writing!
