Perhaps nothing defines the culture on the Maltese Islands more than religion. Life in each city revolves around the Catholic church, and once a year, a massive feast is held to honor the patron saint of each church. Communities compete to see who can put on the best festival, like this in Floriana on the island of Malta, the Saint Publius Feast - somewhere between a New Orleans style Mardi Gras and a ticket tape parade. Following the parade, everyone gathers at the church for a short mass, after which padres lift the enormous gilt icon of St. Publius onto their shoulders and carry it for hours through the streets of Floriana.
