I love the look on your face when you try the licorice!! I'm glad you love your job too because I hope you NEVER stop making these videos!!! The_EluKKa It's Sisu... Those are old S-letters... Name Gifu wouldn't make any sense... Sisu on the other hand is "a Finnish word generally meaning determination, bravery, and resilience. However, the word is widely considered to lack a proper translation into any other language."
I know it look's that it says Gifu but it's sisu and sisu mean's guts and cause we in finland are known from our guts to do everything like go to sauna and stuff. And i just wanted to mention that we are Leijonat (lions) in ice hockey
People really aren't sending much of the traditional Finnish candies that Fazer is originally known for. It's funny that you haven't received a common chocolate bar of Fazer Blue - only a small praline. I would send you some of my favorites but that'll have to wait.
Hey Emmy! It's not Gifu, it's Sisu, just with an old kind of font. It fooled me too at first, but my dad told me that they are Sisu, not Gifu. I'm from Finland. My dad loves those Sisu candies, he always has a box on his pocket wherever he goes. They are sold in several flavours, you have the original one, the oldest one (same since the 20s). There are also new flavours that came after the 80s. If you want to learn more, write "Sisu (candy)" to Wikipedia. If you just type "Sisu", Wikipedia will TRY to explain you the meaning of that Finnish word, that has no literal translation to any language. Sisu is an inner quality in all Finns, that allows them to get through anything, and so much more.
Hey, this is just an addition to my previous comment about the word sisu. I looked into it myself on Wikipedia, and it turned out that Japanese has a word that is somewhat same than sisu, it's "ganbaru". At least Wikipedia says it's somewhat similar.
i always "like" your videos before i even watch them, because as soon as i see your thumbnail picture on my feed, it just makes my day to see a new video posted by you. Love what you do keep up the fun videos :)
+ArskaPvP Yes. More specifically it's fraktur. An old blackletter typeface that was commonly used in Central Europe, Germany, Scandinavia and Baltic countries.
Finns, please stop commenting in Finnish. I'm so embarrassed about it. Yeah, I'm Finn, but it would be nice that Emmy would understand everyone here. Great video Emmy, and don't worry, you will get used to salted licorice if you just keep eating it more often. :3
I really love that you appreciate food regardless if you think it tastes good or bad! I commend you for always giving licorice a chance! You always do a great job and you take the time to research and are so well informed! It gives people a sense of pride and joy when you eat something from their country. In addition, people learn as well! Lovely video, Emmy!! Cheers!
The chocolate candy you tasted at around 7 minutes and a half is very traditional. We call it the Fazer blue and pretty much everyone recognizes that blue color. I personally think it's a bit too chocolate-y for my taste (I love chocolate that has something exciting inside) but my foreign friends love it and I always have to bring them many bars when I visit them!
Fazer has THE best chocolate in the world. 🍫 Tastes like pure love ❤️ It's so lovely to watch your videos, you make my day much better when I have flu or something. I love to listen you speaking finnish, it's not bad at all. 😊 Jenkki means american so that must be the reason why you got so much gum 😄 keep up the good work👍
I love your videos, you are so animated when you get either something really good or really bad. then throw in those cool ending antics. Thank you Emmy
You don't like Salmiakki. That's totally fine. But let me tell you, you've had it easy in these videos :) You've had the mild stuff that actually taste sweet to us. There is this one salmiakki candy that is shaped like a skull (well duh). Well actually there are several skull-shaped ones but this one in particular. It's rock hard and has some sort of liquorice powder on it. And boy it is some potent stuff. I dare you to try them if you can get your hands on'em :)

I really like your videos and I hope you do more of these tasting videos because these are so much fun to watch. By the way, Pantteri-candies are my favourite ones!
Hi, I'm from Finland and I don't like even close all of the salty licorice or basic licorice but there are few I truly love, for example those called Pantteri.
Sirkus Aakkoset are not actually as good as Hedelmä Aakkoset (fruit alphabets) that are all fruit, non liquorice. Still, I enjoy liquorice very much, especially finnish Silver Toffee, that are liquorice cubes that has a texture of a toffee. They stopped manufacturing it about 5 years ago, but it was so popular that finnish people demanded to have it back and we did :D
emmymadeinjapan if you will come here Finland (or Sweden or Denmark) go and try Dumle It's inside is toffee and the cover is thin chocolate It's SO GOOD!
Well, I am not from Finland but I gotta say that I love salmiakki! i think i adquiered the taste pretty much right away, wich I guess it's weird for a non finnish person to like it so much! :D
Salty liquorish is something you have to get used to :P im french born in france and i have lived 15years in finland now and i love salty liquorish (salmiakki), at first i absolutly hated it :D
+Njoy32Gaming Im from Norway and they sell salty liquorish here as well. I got finnish blood from my great grandmother's side, I been into that kind of candy since i was a kid. Maybe because I got a bit of finnish in me in my family tree? xD
Fazer milk chocolate is different to most of chocolates, because its made out of FRESH milk, whereas most other brands use powdered milk. Also, Turun sinappi, tehty puolan turussa :D (lähetä auran sinappia ensi kerralla, joka on oikeasti suomalainen)
I used to carry Sisu pastils with me all the time.. I love them. They really are good for your throat and also refresh your breath. I also love the packaging. The ancient-fashioned font is a nice touch.. You pronounce Finnish well!
What a sweet lady you are! Lolled heartily at the "Gifu", as I, too, thought as a kid that's how you're supposed to say it. The font in the Sisu-box is some olden type.
Hey there! Before I left Finland , I thought that Black Turun Sinappi was hot...well went to France. I thought that I had already tasted a hot mustard, but then came along Dijon mustard...uuh...what the what? It's pure heat and well...the taste is so raw, that I barely could keep myself from spitting it out. That was in the early 90's..nowadays U can find Dijon in any store in Finland. If U haven't tried it yet....try. It completely lacks the sweet element . Take care.
***** You were surprised? Honestly, as a finn, finnish food is tasteless. Even indian or thai food in Finland is so damn mild compared to the real deal. Asian restaurants don't serve really spicy food, because an average finn doesn't like it. Also she lives in USA, I'm sure she's used to spicy food since there's all kinds of different restaurants in USA like many mexican restaurants. Black Turun Sinappi is very mild.
I'm Polish and I remember having those Geisha candies when little. They are delicious and if Finish made them originally then thank you Finland. I love them. Loved the angry birds jellies
Emmy I was wondering if you like coffee and gingerbread because over here in Scotland we have Instant Gingerbread Coffee! Me and my family absolutely love it! I was thinking of sending you one but didn't know if you liked coffee or gingerbread! Please answer!!! Thank you!
Tuollaisia ne siellä jenkeissä on, syövät meidän karkkeja suurin ennakkovarauksin eivätkä osaa maalaisjärjellä päätellä juuri mittään... It's Sisu, not Gifu! :)
The pantteri packet actually has two different kinds of liquorice sweets. The harder discs, which are the ones you tried, in my opinion are nicer and more palatable to people not used to salmiakki. And the softer more squishy discs which are very salty and not at all mentholated in flavour :)
The blue Fazer chocolate is known for being not as sweet as the "regular" milk chocolate. If I remember right, it's made from fresh milk instead of milk powder like milk chocolate usually is, and it's said that makes the difference in taste.
That font on Sisu package is called fractur and was very common throuhout the world until 1940's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraktur from wikipedia: "Typesetting in Fraktur was still very common in the early 20th century in all German-speaking countries and areas, as well as in Norway, Estonia, and Latvia, and was still used to a very small extent in Sweden, Finland and Denmark,[2] while other countries typeset in Antiqua in the early 20th century. Some books at that time used related blackletter fonts such as Schwabacher; however, the predominant typeface was the Normalfraktur, which came in slight variations."
first letter is an old finnish alphabet for a big S and the third letter is an old finnish alphabet for a little s. Neither of them are used anymore in our language.
Hey Emmy i have been watched ur videos long time and its so fun to watch when u eat finland candy "karkki" and i just wanted to say Salmiakki = Salt liquorise and Lakritsi means normal liquorise
Salty liquorice is made by combining ammonia and hydrochloric acid. I remember when we got to make it in chemistry class here in Finland. That was quite fun and people always looked forward to that in school. :)
Fazer milk chocolate is my absolute favourite. You think Fazer's milk chocolate would taste the same as Marabou milk chocolate, but Fazer is soooooooo good.
...I don't understand. Literally no one I know likes liquorice. Nobody. Nope. So who actually buys and eats these?! Because if they are constantly produced... and in so many different candies... THERE MUST BE A REASON. But damn, it's so hard to imagine someone liking liquorice. It's so bad. *cringe* I'm from Greece, we definitely hate it, yet it's in the stores, so weird. Maybe it's the favourite of the majority in Scandinavia but I still don't see how xD
It's okay if you like liquorice but you really don't have to let me know, I am aware of the fact that, clearly, there are a lot of people who like it, why else would it still be in massive production, but I simply explained how I feel because I find it quite bad to taste and I know a lot of people who do not like it (globally speaking) so I just kind of went: "so who actually likes it?" It was rhetorical :3 I wish I'd like it too, because then I could stuff my mouth with jelly beans without worrying that a liquorice one will be there to ruin everything!
i myself love salmiakki and especially Gifu's (liquorice). They are often "missused" i would say. They are pretty much supposed to be eaten with time. You let them melt in your mouth! I love to have one Gifu at work during the break and enjoy the salty, fresh flavor. They also have xylitol in them, so they are good for teeth and gives good breath!
Turun Sinaappia / Turun Sinaappi = Mustard from Turku We usually put some mustard on meat (usually on sausages) :3 Also that "Gifu" package is actually called "Sisu". It just has been written down by an old fabulous font.
Hi Emmy, those last candies u ate were actually Sisu, not Gifu as u spelled. The writing outfit is just becouse it wants to look old and in old finland s was written as G-looking letter if that was a big letter and f-looking letter if that was a little letter. Hope u got it :0
You may be a bit confused why there are so many Fazer Sweets, well that's because here in Finland Karl Fazer established Fazer corporation wich is very well known for example making chocolate we call 'Fazerin sininen' which means Fazer's blue. And of course 'Geisha' and 'Marianne'.
Actually she have fazer blue and geisha on this video and marianne at swedish one. It was before finland part 1 as swedish... so we take turun sinappi whitch is atlast named as finnish.
*She HAD *at THE *sinappi WHICH Excuse me, that was a reflect. I hope you understand what witch means. plus you added an extra 'H' there. unless you were supposed to write which of course. You are free to correct me but I am pretty sure Marianne is Finnish, because it's Fazer's. If it's Finnish, it doesn't mean they couldn't sell it in Sweden. But as I said, you are free to correct me.
I love that you are getting to taste Finland. You had some of my all time favorites in this video. Karl Fazer blue milk chocolate is the best in the world IMO.
Congrats with 333 videos! Btw, will you soon be making another ''Emmy eats Denmark'' ? I saw in the comments on the other denmark video you made that somebody had sent you a package!
The reason I don't tear the bag to open it, is because sometimes the bag tears open more as you reach your hand in. I find it's easier to get food if you open it the other way, it's easier to close, and it's less likely to tear open too much and spill.
Oh man! You gotta try and get hold of "Snåres grisar" from the north (Kokkola). Its a great type of large "pillow-shaped" donut! Just put it into google pictures and youll see what i talk about.
I would love to eat Finland! :D
Great job Emmy!

Nice little fact: that Geisha candy was the first one Karl Fazer invented.
Other little nice fact that even surprises Finnish people. Gifu is Sisu and the G looking letter is an oldtime S.

Suffeli Puffi is one of my favorite chocolate candies and I was really obsessed with it for a while. Same with Fani Pala.
i like salmiakki but that black bird is the worst candy i've eve tasted!
The blue Fazer chocolate is known for being not as sweet as the "regular" milk chocolate. If I remember right, it's made from fresh milk instead of milk powder like milk chocolate usually is, and it's said that makes the difference in taste.
SUOMI MAINITTU TORILLA TAVATAAN!
Siellä on vain ikävää olla aina yksin. :P -paketin lähettäjä
:P täällä olen viikon jokapäivä käynyt mutta ei siellä ole ketään
uberpelaaja :DD
That font on Sisu package is called fractur and was very common throuhout the world until 1940's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraktur
from wikipedia:
"Typesetting in Fraktur was still very common in the early 20th century in all German-speaking countries and areas, as well as in Norway, Estonia, and Latvia, and was still used to a very small extent in Sweden, Finland and Denmark,[2] while other countries typeset in Antiqua in the early 20th century. Some books at that time used related blackletter fonts such as Schwabacher; however, the predominant typeface was the Normalfraktur, which came in slight variations."
Emmy you are so cute! You remind me of a little anime girl!:3
Another great video Emmy, you are terrific.
Gifu = Sisu :)
first letter is an old finnish alphabet for a big S and the third letter is an old finnish alphabet for a little s. Neither of them are used anymore in our language.
Sanna Lilja It's not old Finnish alphabet, it's German typesetting font.
I LOVE food and leaning about FOOD! You're a joy to watch, BTW! I'm a new follower, GO EMMY!X3
That Gifu is sisu real
5/5 english skills here... #slowclap
Hey Emmy i have been watched ur videos long time and its so fun to watch when u eat finland candy "karkki" and i just wanted to say

JUMALAUTA
+Aida Ismailova PÄÄSTÄ IRTI!!!!!!
Salty liquorice is made by combining ammonia and hydrochloric acid. I remember when we got to make it in chemistry class here in Finland. That was quite fun and people always looked forward to that in school. :)
mä rakastan salmiakkia
Fazer milk chocolate is my absolute favourite. You think Fazer's milk chocolate would taste the same as Marabou milk chocolate, but Fazer is soooooooo good.
...I don't understand. Literally no one I know likes liquorice. Nobody. Nope.
So who actually buys and eats these?! Because if they are constantly produced... and in so many different candies... THERE MUST BE A REASON.
But damn, it's so hard to imagine someone liking liquorice. It's so bad. *cringe*
I'm from Greece, we definitely hate it, yet it's in the stores, so weird. Maybe it's the favourite of the majority in Scandinavia but I still don't see how xD
I understand your view but us finns grew up eating salty liquorice and liquorice as a treat and so its kinda ordinary up here.
I'm from Finland and I absolutely love salty liqourice :D and I've grown up eating it. But everyone here doesn't like it, like my little sister:D
im also from Finland and i looooove liqourice. Almost my fave candy. I dont get ppl who doesnt like it haha
You are replying under my post, saying you like liquorice, sorry for so wrongfully assuming you were talking to me.
i myself love salmiakki and especially Gifu's (liquorice). They are often "missused" i would say. They are pretty much supposed to be eaten with time. You let them melt in your mouth! I love to have one Gifu at work during the break and enjoy the salty, fresh flavor. They also have xylitol in them, so they are good for teeth and gives good breath!
Angry birds is finnish?????
YES! OH GOD!
Yes, mr rovio lives in here
Awesome, good to know
Mixology And "Hay Day" is from finland! :D
Yeah angry birds are from finland
Turun Sinaappia / Turun Sinaappi = Mustard from Turku
We usually put some mustard on meat (usually on sausages) :3
Also that "Gifu" package is actually called "Sisu".
Hope u got it :0
Ahah, I love how mellow you sound after having a little bit of chocolate. :D Smooooth chocolate.
Your pronunciation was pretty much spot on. ^^
i love how she calls it "a musterdy poof"! i love it!
I love your adjectives and usage of words! I want to speak that great!
OMG I'm jelly of ur job!!!! Luv u Emmy!
*She HAD *at THE *sinappi WHICH
Excuse me, that was a reflect.
Actually I think he meant she had Marianne in "Emmy eats Sweden" video
I love that you are getting to taste Finland. You had some of my all time favorites in this video. Karl Fazer blue milk chocolate is the best in the world IMO.
Wow, mustard was a surprise. :D Greetings from Finland.
Your Finnish pronounciation is actually kinda good :D When you said "turun sinappia" it sounded like a Finn would have said it! Hyvä Emmy!
I come from finland and am glad that you love the candy. One thing i don't get is that SALTY LIQUORICE IS AWESOMELY DELICIOUS!
It's hard to believe watching someone else eat candy would be so....entertaining. Subed!
This is awesome Emmy! I really want to send you some Caribbean treats and snacks soon! :)
I'm from Finland and Geisha is one of my alltime favourite chocolates!
Great videos! Turun sinappi is good with sausages :)
if i recall correctly there are actually two kinds of pantteri candies in the bag. harder and softer ones
Oh man! You gotta try and get hold of "Snåres grisar" from the north (Kokkola). Its a great type of large "pillow-shaped" donut! Just put it into google pictures and youll see what i talk about.
Here in finland, we have maaaaany different tastes of those Xylitol Jenkki Gum :3 And i love rasberry&liquorice its soo goood
