Connor Lonergan I think it makes alot of sense The veil is the source of most of Thedas's problems including the blight. The elves have been enslaved long enough. Consider this, if it was humans and elves in reverse the humans would be doing the same thing in Solas's shoes. Its only evil when you are on the losing side is what I've noticed about the Hypocrisy of Humans conflicts. Solas isnt wrong nor is his plan inheritantly evil, he's trying to save his people and we would do the same thing in his shoes. Humans are just so blatantly biased and short sighted we dont consider 5 feet ahead let alone the fate of an entire race. If there IS a way to save the Elves and keep humans safe Solas would love that, but at the moment there isnt really any other alternatives. The veil HE created is literally killing his people, and killing Nature itself because the veil is like a slow suffocation of the planet itself. What would you suggest? Leave his people in slavery, dirt and downtrodden to humans? HAH if it were reversed you would be preaching the humans kill all elves and rebellion and dont pretend you wouldnt. Solas has the Power to change things, and people who like the status quo hate powerful people doing the right things for the right reasons because deep down those same people are comfortable with oppression. Thats why I support Solas's goals. If the Humans had left the Elves alone he wouldnt have needed to tear the veil. So blame humans again for that one.
He loves the sound of his own voice, perhaps. Sometimes this cause complications. If you pay attention at the main game, his Dread Wolf is showing more than once before the reveal.
Solas hated my Andraste-pilled Qunari despite me treating him respectfully and asking questions. Mere differences of opinion are enough to turn him against you.
With low approval he seems more godlike. "The qunari offended me" "You have a castle, an army [...] Be content". + The mark is getting worse - *Icy gaze* Yes.
LOL, I thought this exact same thing. He has said it countless times, that he has failed over and over, yet "oh I have plans" like THIS TIME it's going to work...
I bet it will happen, somehow, and will be bad but not that bad and we'll see the evanuris and everybody will try to kill Sol-ass and the mc will decide what to do with him lol
I have thought about Solas' actions at the very end over and over and over again... No matter what outcome happens, ie romance, friend, neutral or him hating you. There is zero reason for him to spare the inquisitor at the end. Save one... He wants someone to stop him. Think about it... If Solas kills the Inquisitor or lets you die as a result of the Mark killing you (unless at the very end he steals the mark back, which would explain the small hint of blue light in his palm at the very end, which also matches murals we have seen of him in the past, but wouldn't explain why the mark still takes your arm) then he is left in the shadows, no one the wiser to his plans. Until that moment, NO ONE knew exactly what he was going to do. With the Inquisitor dead, there are no witnesses. Solas could move about and unravel his plans completely unhindered until it was too late. I see this as the only reason why the writers would have Solas spare us at the very end. Even in a romance ending, letting you die (which is basically what he is doing to you anyways with his plans to tear down the Veil) makes the most sense.
This isn't much of a theory, it's more or less stating the obvious. In the case of positive approval, it can be summed up with "I would treasure the chance to be wrong again". You've proven to him that the world has worth, and he's hesitating. He's hoping that you can stop him from walking down the path he's resolved to take. In the case of negative approval, it can be summed up in the line "I am not a monster. If they must die, I would have them die in peace." Solas values freedom, he values life, and he simply wants to let humanity live in peace until he tears down the veil. And he doesn't think you can stop him. So there's no point in killing you either. in his own words, it is unnecessary. The other reason the writers would have him spare you is because it is in character for him to do so.
SonAlexander I know this is an old post, and it’s a fairly credible theory, but I can think of one devil’s advocate: Solas means pride. Perhaps ‘Solas’ is so prideful and incapable of seeing himself fail, that leaving the Inquisitor alive is of no consequence to him. He’s incredibly powerful, and has shown that resisting him will be incredibly difficult. I’m not saying you’re wrong, and I’d actually prefer Solas is stopped by being redeemed, but pride could be his downfall like many other antagonists. He may believe that his plans are infallible, and that could ultimately be his downfall. You’d think he’s too smart for that, but you never know.
@@masonkruize9235 It's not even really a matter of him being "stopped". The Veil *needs* to come down. It's about the only way anyone will ever be able to actually deal with the Evanuris whom, in case it wasn't blindingly obvious, are behind the Darkspawn and the red lyrium. The *real* issue, is finding some way to go about it *without* having the world ravaged by raw chaos... Which would likely require either A. somehow unifying all the spirits into some form of hive mind, so that their shaping of the Fade merges smoothly with the physical world, or B. Since the physical world in DA is the dream of the Titans imposed on the Fade to begin with. If you could somehow strengthen their dreaming, then it might be able to weather the storm.... Ironically, the Chantry is likely just what the doctor ordered in that regard.
Even later than others with this reply, but Solas himself says that "He's not a monster" in this dialogue. So instead of your theory the answer is much simpler than some convoluted idea of Solas wanting to be stopped. Rather it is simply a combination of his arrogance of thinking he can't be stopped and not wanting to kill if he doesn't have to. If he killed the Inquisitor he would go against his own ethos. Tbh that is what makes Solas a very sympathetic villain, he has a moral compass. If he just simply let Inquisitor die to protect his own plans it would not only go against his own ethos, but would completely deteriorate him as a character.
+ArashiGalaxy It happened naturally in fact, I just made all the choices he greatly disapproves of in this playthrough (siding with the templars, letting the wardens join, not making deal with the elves at the temple, pretending to be the herald, making Cole more human). I think even my judgments fetched me a lot of disapproval. I never did his personal quest either. He just naturally came to hate my guts, and when he confronted me about it, I punched him for the sake of my other Lavellan.

@Melody Ackerman Yup! So very fitting for him. Particularly when his wolf form has 6 eyes like a Pride demon. There's a big theory about that, too: that he was once a Wisdom spirit that Mythal called into a physical body, like Cole, but he was corrupted into Pride (probably from having to fight). Cole drops a TON of hints about it!

It’s possible he was referring to the religion, not the race. He was ideologically disgusted by them when he and the Iron Bull are in your party, and especially when he tags along for the Iron Bull’s personal quest. As for the racial angle, I do think the Qunari were ancient elves who fled north after Tevinter invaded. For their own preservation, they used blood magic to mix their own blood with that of dragons, hence the horns and pointy ears. The twisting of his own kind could have also “offended” him, but I don’t know if this level of depth could be inferred by one line of dialogue.

The thought of an alliance with Tevinter for DA4 is really exiting due to the fact they are always viewed like the bad guys. Is like making a pact with the devil. Everything could go wrong. Also I wonder if Bioware will reveal the mistery of Sandal. I literally forgot about him until I read that letter from him in the crossroads.

A being who can turn people to stone with a thought hardly seems like the kind of power that a heroic character can "fight" in the traditional sense. I'm guessing the end-goal of DA4 will be convincing him that the world is worth keeping as it is.
Well, there are probably limits to this, I mean, Tevinter is kinda like a magic capital to the modern world of Thedas right now, he even seems amazed even with all his elven magical knowledge that Dorian and Alexius can dabble with time magic which suggests that nobody has probably ever done this even during the height of Elvhen Civilization. Especially since all he turned into stone were mostly Qunari warriors, I didn’t see any Saarebas frozen as rocks and we’ve yet to see how his magic would affect dwarves or templars. I’m not saying he’s not considerably more powerful than most mages, I’m just saying there’s still probably a limit to his powers. I mean, he still seems to be preparing for the eventual return of the Evanuris so one would think he can’t also just turn those guys into stones as well.
Wait, do you not get the option of redeeming/killing Solas with low approval? He just takes the anchor and leaves. I think that's great on BioWares part... If you had low approval with him, you probably couldn't change his mind anyways
I just got this result too. I was doing a DAI run favoring Sera and Vivienne, which pissed off Solas. Was very suprised that he took the Anchor and left.
I just finished Trespasser again, and when you ask him why this world has to end in order to restore the elves (choice 1 at 5:20), he says something like "Good question. But not one I will answer. It would be too easy to reveal too much. You showed a thoughtfulness, i always respected...". How does he reply in the low approval scenario? I suspect he still won't answer. But his reason should be different.
I know this is an old comment, but I believe he said “I owed you answers, but I will not give you the tools to stop me”(can’t remember the exact words)
I think a lot of people are misunderstanding what he meant by the qunari offending him. I don’t think he meant it entirely literally, but rather that he disagreed with everything it stood for. He led a revolution against a cult of false gods and freed those he could. In a banter during bulls personal quest, he makes a comment to the qunari elf guy that a slave can always revolt against their master or dream of freedom, but under the qun they have not been taught to think. The Qun is a the very thing he fought so hard to destroy, but the Qun is worse, in his eyes, because someone who does not dare to attempt or think of freedom will never revolt or remove themselves from the system.
Well, his banters with Iron Bull pre-Demands of the Qun or post-Demands in which you cemented the alliance with the Qun over the safety of the Chargers are undeniably one of the vicious banters in BW history (it tops Wynne vs Morrigan banters).
The Qun allow the thought of alternative. Solas does not allow. You are allowed it use all the thoughts who been granted but for Solas it's like walking amongst braindead tranquil. The resistance is constantly failing since it is invite to failure. And Solas is allowed to win.
I know I’m late to this party, but man I hope Fenris comes back in the next game. I not only loved his character, but I have this theory Fenris’ his lyrium markings could be useful against Solas. And it would be very cool, and potentially heartbreaking (for those who romanced Solas and Fenris in their respective games) if the 2 faced off in a battle. Just think about how we had to choose to leave either Hawk or Alister/Stroud behind in the fade, then picture a similar idea but with Solas and Fenris fighting each other. Plus I’d just love a game were all our previous hero’s (and their love interest/crew) join together for an epic final battle.
Niji Sakura Agreed. I really wish that DA4 will feature the inquisitor as the protagonist cause his connection to solas, especially if romanced is too important to be of a secondary role or npc controlled conversation between them in DA4.
Yep, lets hope that bioware will take that route with DA4, different companions,landscape and characters, but same protagonist, it doesn't have to have a new protagonist every new game.

When she reacted about his plan, I chose the middle dialogue option saying that she thanked him for the "castle", which I assumed is Solas leading, or rather bestowing Skyhold to back then fledgling organization. And Solas replies sincerely that she used it well.
DA4, One armed female Elven Mage gets her revenge wielding a special Dagna-made hand crafted lightweight pure lyrium Staff of almost infinite power. Besides, as a knight-enchanter I only need one arm to wield the spirit blade. I can see it now, the first one armed Mage protagonist in gaming history. If you played any other class you're SOL.
i play a two-handed-sword warrior. one arm? No problem. Just replace the missing arm with a prosthetic with a cannon built in, and I'll be like Guts from Berserk.
I really hope I don’t have to kill Solas in the next game. He and my Lavellan got so attached and romantic and my heart got broken but I hope there’s still some hope between the two. At least a choice to give Solas some peace or happiness with the Inquisitor. Or if a low approval that the Inquisitor is allowed the last blow.
HandsomeRanger cute looking elf you got there in that link. except for the hairstyle. granted I only like one hairstyle in the game for the females and only one or two for the males. hairstyles in this game are horrible. hope bioware puts the same amount of care into the armor / hairstyles of the next game that they put into the areas of this game.
He did seem pretty serious about "reducing" damages, so it probably is for strengthening the veils really. Though it might also help him to take it down, who knows.
If a Grey Warden kills solas, does he get absorbed and die? He's no different soul wise than an archdemon, an old god. It would explain why he hates the Wardens, not only do they hunt his brothers and sisters, they also found the way to permanently kill him unknowingly.
Anyone can kill Solas, you just need to be successful (considering he is extremely powerful however that is unlikely). Wardens are able to kill archdemons because both have the blight, the archdemon travels to the warden as it thinks it's a darkspawn and subsequently dies (and for the record the old gods and the eleven gods were different). Since Solas doesn't have the blight it would be irrelavent

I'm a little surprised that I got high approval from him because I mostly did everything he didn't like XD but I'm glad he still considered me a good friend, seriously this character is just so cool
I would really like a unexpected betrayal. Like Morrigan, Zevran (only if you don't get his approval up), Anders, Isabela, Blackwall, Bull and even Solas kinda felt predictable? I know Blackwall, Bull, and Solas kinda fits the archetype that Alistair, Aveline, and Cassandra fit to a degree but I would really like a percieved "good guy" to be utterly changed by the end of the game and like genuinely bad. Like give me the young idealist who gets totally warped throughout the game rather than old war vets do things cause of the ~P-A-S-T~. As much as I adore bad noodle man (yes I sobbed when my Inq and him married and I'm not over it), Cullen would've been a good choice for that kind of storyline if he had not been a part of the Inquisition or a double agent for Corypheus/Calpernia/Samson or had only been introduced in Inquisition with a similar origin story that he has in game already rather than be a reoccurring character like he has been. Like I know a lot of people dislike Cullen and arguably he was an obvious choice for the "Templar General" but his regular storyline and romance and then have him just be like "sike this was an act; i stab u now" would've crushed so many players hearts probably on the same level as Solas' and Bull's betrayal did. Like I want a betrayal that feels like it is completely out of left field but it has been built up since the beginning without the slip-ups that Solas gave. Like we talk of bards, assassins, spies, and Ben Hassrath but we don't have "bad ending only" romances where the feelings were never real. Solas, Bull, Thom, Morrigan, they all actually care about the player character but not enough to stop them from achieving their higher goals/purposes (for Thom it's atonement but I digress). I want to be totally gutted and decieved. I want the emotional turmoil of being used and led astray.

Especially because there is a real chance we'll visit the city in the next game and it's going to be akward if for some reason the inquisitor joins the trip: "Soo, this city has the same name as your ex/boyfriend/friend/archenemy?" "Yep"
He may get on my nerves sometimes through the game but I could never have my character be mean to him or to any of the others characters,i treat him fairly like the rest.

+laura connolly Yes, he removes your hand and forearm in all versions, romance, high approval, low approval, TL;DR. Without it you'd die within minutes. In romance version he removes her arm in the gentlest way possible, just as he kisses her, in other versions he's like: "Give me your hand.". You end up with an arm still attached at the end of this scene because it's still disintegrating (I guess), but in the epilogue it's always missing.
+Skyplen his plan was to absorb the essence of mythal so that his strength would return much sooner. however according to developers notes the essence of mythal was already passed to morrigan through the eluvian.
actually not all of it could be in morrigan because remember she split it when she gave part of her esscense to Hawke and the other part might still be alive if you chose for your warden not to kill her in DA:O so even though solas absorbed this part of flemeth who know how much of her is still alive?
There's definitely some bad blood between Solas and your second Lavellan. At the end of the video I couldn't help but notice Rainer beside your character at the war table. Does this only happen if you romanced anyone (except Solas)?

Sorry if you address this in another video but is there an alternate dialog from Solas after he says "It started with a war." There is a weird cut there like there might be more he says in some other version before continuing on with "War breeds fear." Any ideas?
How are you able to tell each person's approval rating? There's no scale like in the first two games, and there's no way I'm going to continually do math in my head, lol.

Siding with the Templars, then bring the wardens into the Inquisition, attack the sentinal elves guards that are guarding mythal. Then punch him in the face when throws a tantrum about all your choices
I don't understand all the hate for solas, you guys gotta understand that for someone who has lived for as long as he has and experience as much of the world as he has it would be understandable that so detached from it. after seeing all the hate a cruelty of this world it makes sense that he'd want to being back the old one, his one. it's only if the inquisitor shows him that there's worth in the world that he starts doubting his plan and begins developing a connection with the world he's currently in. Even at the end of trespassor if you have high approval you can see that deep down he's screaming and begging you to stop him from ending this world. solas has to be one of the most well written and complicated character in DA. And for those of you who still disagree with me, just know this. At least he's not Anders.
@@Hjalmar_an_Craite Even as someone who likes Anders, I don't see how you like him more than Solas. I can't get over him pulling that, "If you love me, you'll help me with no questions." Like, dude, you're an obviously unstable mage with a spirit turned demon possessing him (bc Justice became Vengeance which is definitely a demon). I can't just do something bc I love you without asking questions. And when I agreed, he used me to blow up the Chantry. At least just about everything you help Solas do really is to stop Corypheus and he doesn't sound like he's whining every 2 seconds. (Though, to be clear, I was on the side of the mages and definitely believe in their plight.)
@@hinata1ize I like Anders more than Solas because Anders had a valid reason to do what he did. Solas's reason to bring back the ancient elves is purely selfish. Anders fought for all mages (even for those who definitly wouldn't condone his actions) while Solas does it because he cannot live with the fact that he fucked up and the world has moved on. He wants to restore something that no longer exists preaching it's for his people, yet it really is only so he can stop feeling guilty.

Verloria Yami Maybe this is an ending where Cullen continues to take lyrium. I know if he takes lyrium that it will drive him into madness and he'll be begging on the streets for it in the epilogue

+Melynda S I'm not too sure about main foe, especially since with certain options and how Solas approves of the Inquisitor he can be reasoned with fairly well, he's certainly going to be a threat and antagonist, but I'm not sure he really feels like main villain material >_> However his role winds up playing out in future games though, I am *quite* certain that the Qunari are going to be the main political and mundane threat, I've noticed that Dragon Age always seems to have a pretty big plot arc dealing with the political side of things and threats that are mundane in that they have nothing to do with magic or stuff like blights and whatnot...well, Inquisition and Origins do, DA2 seems more politics and mundane threats, so like with other areas and issues it's kind of the odd one out.
I still think I can save Solas. I can't hate him, he's too similar to myself. First of all, I would never preach "kill all elves" for any reason. Rebellion, yes. I have long thought someone should do something about the horrible situation that the city elves have been in what with the slavery in tevinter and the alienages and servitude elsewhere. As a matter of fact, I'm even for killing every slave owner and Arl who perpetuates their oppression. But even if the situation was reversed, I see no reason to destroy an entire race. The veil's biggest problem is that it cut people off from the fade. The evanuris being trapped is honestly a good thing if they can't be killed as they were the oppressors of old. The people of the world they presently live are fine not being connected to the fade to the extent of how it used to be, so there's no reason to force that connection now. Even if tearing down the veil helps put a stop to the Blights, the amount of damage Solas implies it will cause will not be worth it. He can use his powers and resources to make changes without potentially killing everyone. The mages did it depending on who you make divine. And since in some playthroughs he basically has the Inquisitor in his pocket, I don't see why he wouldn't choose that route if liberating the elves of the present was his main goal. He wants to set the world back to the way it used to be. I understand why, and so I don't blame him and I don't even want to kill him. If there is any other way to stop him without killing him or imprisoning him for good, I would do it. But his plan is basically genocide. What you're saying is before the civil rights movement and given the resources, black people and the other oppressed minorities would have been completely in the right if they had just killed all the white people in the US in order to finally stopped being oppressed. But they wouldn't have been, bc not all white people were actively trying to harm them. Not all were racist, and despite the atrocities of their ancestors and those that were committed in that time period, virtual genocide was not the answer.

He literally doesn't even like the elves of the present. He didn't even acknowledge the value of the lives of the other races until he met the Inquisitor. He admits to your face that he thought little of your people if you're not an elf and saw elves as a lost cause. He didn't appreciate any of what the Dalish were trying to do and seems to have a certain distaste of city elves even though he pities them. Destroying the veil will cause chaos and the loss of countless lives, and he knows this. That's why what he's doing is evil. He knows based on how much damage the breach caused that the veil coming down will mess up the world and he doesn't care or cares little. That's what's wrong with tearing down the veil as a Solution. He cares more about the world of the past and refuses to acknowledge the present in any meaningful way. If he had been staging an elven rebellion, I'd be all for it. Yes it would be destabilizing and yes it would cause deaths, but anyone fighting to keep a people oppressed deserves it. The veil going down hurts everyone on the planet, put mages at an increased risk of becoming abominations bc they don't know how to deal with spirits, and puts far more innocent people at risk than the rebellion would. If I had any faith that Solas cared about anyone but the elves of the past and the dreams of the past, if I believed he would care enough to try to guide the humans, dwarves, and Qunari on how to deal with the new world, if Solas gave a really answer as to how he's going to deal with the evanuris that are trapped in the fade, then maybe I could get behind tearing down the veil.
It's so annoying seeing solas leave the party. Rift Mage is a very useful specialisation because of the spirit damage moves. If only Dorian or Vivienne was a rift Mage instead.
Well the other moves are useful too like veilstrike and the damage upgrade to the pull of the abyss. It's better than dorian who does the damage over time spirit damage or Vivienne who goes CQC.

In other versions he shows his respect when you talk to him about the orb and inquisition, he says that he's sorry about your hand, you get the chance to redeem him too. Here he says that the Inquisition is your mess, he also never says that he's sorry that you're dying and he only saves you at the end because your death would cause more chaos and it is not needed.
Solas does have one flaw, he underestimates people, he underestimated corypheus and he will underestimate who ever is stopping him in DA4.
That's why he says at the good approval side when you tell him you'll find a way to prove they deserve to live and Solas say something like " I look forward to being proved wrong again" I don't remember it fully

The veil is the source of most of Thedas's problems including the blight.
The elves have been enslaved long enough.
Consider this, if it was humans and elves in reverse the humans would be doing the same thing in Solas's shoes.
Its only evil when you are on the losing side is what I've noticed about the Hypocrisy of Humans conflicts.
Solas isnt wrong nor is his plan inheritantly evil, he's trying to save his people and we would do the same thing in his shoes. Humans are just so blatantly biased and short sighted we dont consider 5 feet ahead let alone the fate of an entire race.
If there IS a way to save the Elves and keep humans safe Solas would love that, but at the moment there isnt really any other alternatives. The veil HE created is literally killing his people, and killing Nature itself because the veil is like a slow suffocation of the planet itself.
What would you suggest? Leave his people in slavery, dirt and downtrodden to humans? HAH if it were reversed you would be preaching the humans kill all elves and rebellion and dont pretend you wouldnt.
Solas has the Power to change things, and people who like the status quo hate powerful people doing the right things for the right reasons because deep down those same people are comfortable with oppression. Thats why I support Solas's goals.
If the Humans had left the Elves alone he wouldnt have needed to tear the veil. So blame humans again for that one.

Solas hated my Andraste-pilled Qunari despite me treating him respectfully and asking questions. Mere differences of opinion are enough to turn him against you.

I have thought about Solas' actions at the very end over and over and over again... No matter what outcome happens, ie romance, friend, neutral or him hating you. There is zero reason for him to spare the inquisitor at the end. Save one... He wants someone to stop him.
Think about it... If Solas kills the Inquisitor or lets you die as a result of the Mark killing you (unless at the very end he steals the mark back, which would explain the small hint of blue light in his palm at the very end, which also matches murals we have seen of him in the past, but wouldn't explain why the mark still takes your arm) then he is left in the shadows, no one the wiser to his plans. Until that moment, NO ONE knew exactly what he was going to do. With the Inquisitor dead, there are no witnesses. Solas could move about and unravel his plans completely unhindered until it was too late.
I see this as the only reason why the writers would have Solas spare us at the very end. Even in a romance ending, letting you die (which is basically what he is doing to you anyways with his plans to tear down the Veil) makes the most sense.

This isn't much of a theory, it's more or less stating the obvious. In the case of positive approval, it can be summed up with "I would treasure the chance to be wrong again". You've proven to him that the world has worth, and he's hesitating. He's hoping that you can stop him from walking down the path he's resolved to take.
In the case of negative approval, it can be summed up in the line "I am not a monster. If they must die, I would have them die in peace." Solas values freedom, he values life, and he simply wants to let humanity live in peace until he tears down the veil. And he doesn't think you can stop him. So there's no point in killing you either. in his own words, it is unnecessary.
The other reason the writers would have him spare you is because it is in character for him to do so.
SonAlexander I know this is an old post, and it’s a fairly credible theory, but I can think of one devil’s advocate:
Solas means pride. Perhaps ‘Solas’ is so prideful and incapable of seeing himself fail, that leaving the Inquisitor alive is of no consequence to him. He’s incredibly powerful, and has shown that resisting him will be incredibly difficult. I’m not saying you’re wrong, and I’d actually prefer Solas is stopped by being redeemed, but pride could be his downfall like many other antagonists. He may believe that his plans are infallible, and that could ultimately be his downfall. You’d think he’s too smart for that, but you never know.
@@masonkruize9235 It's not even really a matter of him being "stopped". The Veil *needs* to come down. It's about the only way anyone will ever be able to actually deal with the Evanuris whom, in case it wasn't blindingly obvious, are behind the Darkspawn and the red lyrium.
The *real* issue, is finding some way to go about it *without* having the world ravaged by raw chaos... Which would likely require either A. somehow unifying all the spirits into some form of hive mind, so that their shaping of the Fade merges smoothly with the physical world, or B. Since the physical world in DA is the dream of the Titans imposed on the Fade to begin with. If you could somehow strengthen their dreaming, then it might be able to weather the storm.... Ironically, the Chantry is likely just what the doctor ordered in that regard.
Even later than others with this reply, but Solas himself says that "He's not a monster" in this dialogue. So instead of your theory the answer is much simpler than some convoluted idea of Solas wanting to be stopped. Rather it is simply a combination of his arrogance of thinking he can't be stopped and not wanting to kill if he doesn't have to.
If he killed the Inquisitor he would go against his own ethos. Tbh that is what makes Solas a very sympathetic villain, he has a moral compass. If he just simply let Inquisitor die to protect his own plans it would not only go against his own ethos, but would completely deteriorate him as a character.
I still respect him. If he hates you, he stays to save the world. If he hates you, he still peacefully talks to you.
That's what at least makes him slightly higher than Corypheus: he still listens.
+ArashiGalaxy It happened naturally in fact, I just made all the choices he greatly disapproves of in this playthrough (siding with the templars, letting the wardens join, not making deal with the elves at the temple, pretending to be the herald, making Cole more human). I think even my judgments fetched me a lot of disapproval. I never did his personal quest either. He just naturally came to hate my guts, and when he confronted me about it, I punched him for the sake of my other Lavellan.

Solas is a complex character, I like him, but I hate some of his ideals, but whether you love him or hate his guts, you can’t deny that he’s still a great character and antagonist
It’s possible he was referring to the religion, not the race. He was ideologically disgusted by them when he and the Iron Bull are in your party, and especially when he tags along for the Iron Bull’s personal quest.
As for the racial angle, I do think the Qunari were ancient elves who fled north after Tevinter invaded. For their own preservation, they used blood magic to mix their own blood with that of dragons, hence the horns and pointy ears. The twisting of his own kind could have also “offended” him, but I don’t know if this level of depth could be inferred by one line of dialogue.

Well, there are probably limits to this, I mean, Tevinter is kinda like a magic capital to the modern world of Thedas right now, he even seems amazed even with all his elven magical knowledge that Dorian and Alexius can dabble with time magic which suggests that nobody has probably ever done this even during the height of Elvhen Civilization.
Especially since all he turned into stone were mostly Qunari warriors, I didn’t see any Saarebas frozen as rocks and we’ve yet to see how his magic would affect dwarves or templars. I’m not saying he’s not considerably more powerful than most mages, I’m just saying there’s still probably a limit to his powers.
I mean, he still seems to be preparing for the eventual return of the Evanuris so one would think he can’t also just turn those guys into stones as well.

I just got this result too. I was doing a DAI run favoring Sera and Vivienne, which pissed off Solas. Was very suprised that he took the Anchor and left.
I just finished Trespasser again, and when you ask him why this world has to end in order to restore the elves (choice 1 at 5:20), he says something like "Good question. But not one I will answer. It would be too easy to reveal too much. You showed a thoughtfulness, i always respected...".
How does he reply in the low approval scenario? I suspect he still won't answer. But his reason should be different.

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding what he meant by the qunari offending him. I don’t think he meant it entirely literally, but rather that he disagreed with everything it stood for.
He led a revolution against a cult of false gods and freed those he could. In a banter during bulls personal quest, he makes a comment to the qunari elf guy that a slave can always revolt against their master or dream of freedom, but under the qun they have not been taught to think.
The Qun is a the very thing he fought so hard to destroy, but the Qun is worse, in his eyes, because someone who does not dare to attempt or think of freedom will never revolt or remove themselves from the system.
It seems solas values thoughts. Thats what Spirits are basically.
Well, his banters with Iron Bull pre-Demands of the Qun or post-Demands in which you cemented the alliance with the Qun over the safety of the Chargers are undeniably one of the vicious banters in BW history (it tops Wynne vs Morrigan banters).
The Qun allow the thought of alternative. Solas does not allow. You are allowed it use all the thoughts who been granted but for Solas it's like walking amongst braindead tranquil.
The resistance is constantly failing since it is invite to failure. And Solas is allowed to win.

I know I’m late to this party, but man I hope Fenris comes back in the next game. I not only loved his character, but I have this theory Fenris’ his lyrium markings could be useful against Solas. And it would be very cool, and potentially heartbreaking (for those who romanced Solas and Fenris in their respective games) if the 2 faced off in a battle. Just think about how we had to choose to leave either Hawk or Alister/Stroud behind in the fade, then picture a similar idea but with Solas and Fenris fighting each other. Plus I’d just love a game were all our previous hero’s (and their love interest/crew) join together for an epic final battle.

He did seem pretty serious about "reducing" damages, so it probably is for strengthening the veils really. Though it might also help him to take it down, who knows.
If a Grey Warden kills solas, does he get absorbed and die? He's no different soul wise than an archdemon, an old god. It would explain why he hates the Wardens, not only do they hunt his brothers and sisters, they also found the way to permanently kill him unknowingly.
Anyone can kill Solas, you just need to be successful (considering he is extremely powerful however that is unlikely).
Wardens are able to kill archdemons because both have the blight, the archdemon travels to the warden as it thinks it's a darkspawn and subsequently dies (and for the record the old gods and the eleven gods were different). Since Solas doesn't have the blight it would be irrelavent
so wait a minute, no more Inquisition DLC? now we will have to wait 3-4 years for a new game?

I'm a little surprised that I got high approval from him because I mostly did everything he didn't like XD but I'm glad he still considered me a good friend, seriously this character is just so cool

I would really like a unexpected betrayal. Like Morrigan, Zevran (only if you don't get his approval up), Anders, Isabela, Blackwall, Bull and even Solas kinda felt predictable? I know Blackwall, Bull, and Solas kinda fits the archetype that Alistair, Aveline, and Cassandra fit to a degree but I would really like a percieved "good guy" to be utterly changed by the end of the game and like genuinely bad. Like give me the young idealist who gets totally warped throughout the game rather than old war vets do things cause of the ~P-A-S-T~.
As much as I adore bad noodle man (yes I sobbed when my Inq and him married and I'm not over it), Cullen would've been a good choice for that kind of storyline if he had not been a part of the Inquisition or a double agent for Corypheus/Calpernia/Samson or had only been introduced in Inquisition with a similar origin story that he has in game already rather than be a reoccurring character like he has been. Like I know a lot of people dislike Cullen and arguably he was an obvious choice for the "Templar General" but his regular storyline and romance and then have him just be like "sike this was an act; i stab u now" would've crushed so many players hearts probably on the same level as Solas' and Bull's betrayal did.
Like I want a betrayal that feels like it is completely out of left field but it has been built up since the beginning without the slip-ups that Solas gave. Like we talk of bards, assassins, spies, and Ben Hassrath but we don't have "bad ending only" romances where the feelings were never real. Solas, Bull, Thom, Morrigan, they all actually care about the player character but not enough to stop them from achieving their higher goals/purposes (for Thom it's atonement but I digress).
I want to be totally gutted and decieved. I want the emotional turmoil of being used and led astray.

+laura connolly Yes, he removes your hand and forearm in all versions, romance, high approval, low approval, TL;DR. Without it you'd die within minutes. In romance version he removes her arm in the gentlest way possible, just as he kisses her, in other versions he's like: "Give me your hand.". You end up with an arm still attached at the end of this scene because it's still disintegrating (I guess), but in the epilogue it's always missing.

Siding with the Templars, then bring the wardens into the Inquisition, attack the sentinal elves guards that are guarding mythal. Then punch him in the face when throws a tantrum about all your choices
I don't understand all the hate for solas, you guys gotta understand that for someone who has lived for as long as he has and experience as much of the world as he has it would be understandable that so detached from it. after seeing all the hate a cruelty of this world it makes sense that he'd want to being back the old one, his one. it's only if the inquisitor shows him that there's worth in the world that he starts doubting his plan and begins developing a connection with the world he's currently in. Even at the end of trespassor if you have high approval you can see that deep down he's screaming and begging you to stop him from ending this world. solas has to be one of the most well written and complicated character in DA.
And for those of you who still disagree with me, just know this. At least he's not Anders.

Like, dude, you're an obviously unstable mage with a spirit turned demon possessing him (bc Justice became Vengeance which is definitely a demon). I can't just do something bc I love you without asking questions. And when I agreed, he used me to blow up the Chantry. At least just about everything you help Solas do really is to stop Corypheus and he doesn't sound like he's whining every 2 seconds. (Though, to be clear, I was on the side of the mages and definitely believe in their plight.)
@@hinata1ize I like Anders more than Solas because Anders had a valid reason to do what he did. Solas's reason to bring back the ancient elves is purely selfish. Anders fought for all mages (even for those who definitly wouldn't condone his actions) while Solas does it because he cannot live with the fact that he fucked up and the world has moved on. He wants to restore something that no longer exists preaching it's for his people, yet it really is only so he can stop feeling guilty.

+Melynda S I'm not too sure about main foe, especially since with certain options and how Solas approves of the Inquisitor he can be reasoned with fairly well, he's certainly going to be a threat and antagonist, but I'm not sure he really feels like main villain material >_>
However his role winds up playing out in future games though, I am *quite* certain that the Qunari are going to be the main political and mundane threat, I've noticed that Dragon Age always seems to have a pretty big plot arc dealing with the political side of things and threats that are mundane in that they have nothing to do with magic or stuff like blights and whatnot...well, Inquisition and Origins do, DA2 seems more politics and mundane threats, so like with other areas and issues it's kind of the odd one out.

Although I do differ with him on certain parts, such as casually turning people to stone instead of giving them the mercy of death. (even though the qunari were assholes, I wouldn't wish eternal torment on anybody, that's too harsh.)

The veil is the source of most of Thedas's problems including the blight.
The elves have been enslaved long enough.
Consider this, if it was humans and elves in reverse the humans would be doing the same thing in Solas's shoes.
Its only evil when you are on the losing side is what I've noticed about the Hypocrisy of Humans conflicts.
Solas isnt wrong nor is his plan inheritantly evil, he's trying to save his people and we would do the same thing in his shoes. Humans are just so blatantly biased and short sighted we dont consider 5 feet ahead let alone the fate of an entire race.
If there IS a way to save the Elves and keep humans safe Solas would love that, but at the moment there isnt really any other alternatives. The veil HE created is literally killing his people, and killing Nature itself because the veil is like a slow suffocation of the planet itself.
What would you suggest? Leave his people in slavery, dirt and downtrodden to humans? HAH if it were reversed you would be preaching the humans kill all elves and rebellion and dont pretend you wouldnt.
Solas has the Power to change things, and people who like the status quo hate powerful people doing the right things for the right reasons because deep down those same people are comfortable with oppression. Thats why I support Solas's goals.
If the Humans had left the Elves alone he wouldnt have needed to tear the veil. So blame humans again for that one.
First of all, I would never preach "kill all elves" for any reason. Rebellion, yes. I have long thought someone should do something about the horrible situation that the city elves have been in what with the slavery in tevinter and the alienages and servitude elsewhere. As a matter of fact, I'm even for killing every slave owner and Arl who perpetuates their oppression. But even if the situation was reversed, I see no reason to destroy an entire race.
The veil's biggest problem is that it cut people off from the fade. The evanuris being trapped is honestly a good thing if they can't be killed as they were the oppressors of old. The people of the world they presently live are fine not being connected to the fade to the extent of how it used to be, so there's no reason to force that connection now. Even if tearing down the veil helps put a stop to the Blights, the amount of damage Solas implies it will cause will not be worth it.
He can use his powers and resources to make changes without potentially killing everyone. The mages did it depending on who you make divine. And since in some playthroughs he basically has the Inquisitor in his pocket, I don't see why he wouldn't choose that route if liberating the elves of the present was his main goal.
He wants to set the world back to the way it used to be. I understand why, and so I don't blame him and I don't even want to kill him. If there is any other way to stop him without killing him or imprisoning him for good, I would do it. But his plan is basically genocide.
What you're saying is before the civil rights movement and given the resources, black people and the other oppressed minorities would have been completely in the right if they had just killed all the white people in the US in order to finally stopped being oppressed. But they wouldn't have been, bc not all white people were actively trying to harm them. Not all were racist, and despite the atrocities of their ancestors and those that were committed in that time period, virtual genocide was not the answer.

He literally doesn't even like the elves of the present. He didn't even acknowledge the value of the lives of the other races until he met the Inquisitor. He admits to your face that he thought little of your people if you're not an elf and saw elves as a lost cause. He didn't appreciate any of what the Dalish were trying to do and seems to have a certain distaste of city elves even though he pities them.
Destroying the veil will cause chaos and the loss of countless lives, and he knows this. That's why what he's doing is evil. He knows based on how much damage the breach caused that the veil coming down will mess up the world and he doesn't care or cares little. That's what's wrong with tearing down the veil as a Solution. He cares more about the world of the past and refuses to acknowledge the present in any meaningful way. If he had been staging an elven rebellion, I'd be all for it. Yes it would be destabilizing and yes it would cause deaths, but anyone fighting to keep a people oppressed deserves it. The veil going down hurts everyone on the planet, put mages at an increased risk of becoming abominations bc they don't know how to deal with spirits, and puts far more innocent people at risk than the rebellion would.
If I had any faith that Solas cared about anyone but the elves of the past and the dreams of the past, if I believed he would care enough to try to guide the humans, dwarves, and Qunari on how to deal with the new world, if Solas gave a really answer as to how he's going to deal with the evanuris that are trapped in the fade, then maybe I could get behind tearing down the veil.
It's so annoying seeing solas leave the party. Rift Mage is a very useful specialisation because of the spirit damage moves. If only Dorian or Vivienne was a rift Mage instead.
But only one of Solas' moves inflicted spiritual damage, while both Dorian and Vivienne had spirit damage moves too...
Well the other moves are useful too like veilstrike and the damage upgrade to the pull of the abyss.
It's better than dorian who does the damage over time spirit damage or Vivienne who goes CQC.

In other versions he shows his respect when you talk to him about the orb and inquisition, he says that he's sorry about your hand, you get the chance to redeem him too. Here he says that the Inquisition is your mess, he also never says that he's sorry that you're dying and he only saves you at the end because your death would cause more chaos and it is not needed.
