  • In this short film Dr Robert Whan, Director of Armagh Robinson Library, provides a brief overview of the history of the Library building.
The oldest public library in Northern Ireland, Armagh Robinson Library (formerly known as Armagh Public Library) was established in 1771 by Richard Robinson, Archbishop of Armagh, who commissioned the English-born architect Thomas Cooley to design the building.
The Library was extended at either end in the 1840s, in order to accommodate the growing collection.
The books are still (as they have been from the beginning) shelved according to size with the larger books placed on the lower shelves and the smallest ones on the top shelves.
