Earth's new "mini-moon" is a fascinating reminder of how dynamic our cosmic neighborhood really is! These temporary companions are usually small asteroids that get caught by Earth's gravity for a brief period before they continue their journey through space. Each mini-moon offers scientists a rare opportunity to study near-Earth objects up close, helping us learn more about the composition of these space rocks and how they interact with our planet's gravitational field. It also raises intriguing possibilities for future missions imagine exploring one of these visitors or even using them for resource extraction someday!
I'm always happy that Neil is here to keep it real with everyone and not embellish anything. In saying that, I will never forgive you for Pluto!! That little celestial body just wanted to love us ❤ 😢
thank you for the timely video explaining literally what all of us here were already thinking, and also for putting "mini-moon" in quotes. Thinking about the size being a factor for the definition of what a "moon" is hurts my brain unless you come up w/ some %size/mass that is the cutoff, or possibly also involve distance from what it orbits (relative to the mass), and if the center of gravity falls within the body being orbited (vs. being outside; i.e. if the center is outside then you'd have a dual system so calling the smaller a moon makes no sense IMO). Serious question, If this were considered a moon, would that mean parts of Saturn's ring should also be considered moons, or is that all effectively just dust? If so that would boggle my mind and just furthers the argument that we shouldn't consider this a moon (non-withstanding the argument that it isn't even captured; for me, not being captured makes considering it a moon a non-starter). Or course, what does "captured" really mean? (because the universe isn't just made up of the 2 bodies in question, so... down that rabbit hole you go). Sounds like we need a whole video on this.
That would be misinformation. It's far too small to end the world even if it where to hit Earth. However we know it's trajectory and it's not going to hit Earth.
