- This is a start to finish time lapse of a thirteen step staircase we built on the side of the Y Project that we documented day-by-day on our vlog. This time lapse covers the excavation of, base preparation, and installation of these block steps with hardscape under cap lighting and natural stone step caps.

@@iamahardscaper I'm trying to do my own patio. I had excavated a 25 x 14 area by hand almost down 10". I had planned on 6" of 3/4 clear, 1 1/4" of hpb and around 2 1/2" for a paver which we have yet to select.
I rented a bobcat mt85 to help get rid of the soil mountain in my backyard as well as bring in the 3/4 clear. I decided to try and smooth out the native soil base with the machine and left huge ruts in the base.
Should I be worried about disturbing that soil?
Also from the planned height of my 3/4" base to my patio door will be 19". I might be able to raise the base another 1" making the height difference 18" but I'm not sure what to do for stairs.
As long as the subsoil is not disturbed too much. We throw some 3/4 stone into it and compact it pretty good as well. You’ll want to add a couple steps. We have a couple videos on step building, this may help:

Do you adhere the natural stone caps with regular construction adhesive or is there a special product designed for natural stone caps? I have also seen people use mortar to adhere the caps. Is this something you have ever done? Thanks!
I don’t use mortar but it would be totally fine. I use a Hardscape specific glue. Should be good for adhering concrete to concrete or natural stone to concrete.
how do you replace the led on the stairs if it fails?
Pull off the cap and replace it. There are lights on the market though that you can pull out without removing the cap.
can you do a vid on removing and reinstalling the caps for led repair?

It looks like you started putting pavers from the middle. Is there a reason why?
I wouldn’t do that with any other paver. These just go in randomly
What is the black burlap thing you are using? does it need to have any specifications?
I have seen people just use paver bSe and gravel. What is the difference between using this?
It is a woven geotextile. Best is to contact your local landscape supplier and see what they have in stock. Usually they just have one type
Geotextile helps to separate the subsoil from the base material so there is no contamination. It also helps stabilize the base material
Hey thanks for showing a really in-depth, multi-faceted project. Were you adhesing or is that dielectric? Do you adhese any sort of treads ever? like a step landing made out of pavers?
We never use pavers for steps. The steps get adhered with a hardscape adhesive. The lighting uses a silicone filled connector to prevent water.
What is the best method for calculating for the amount of steps that will be needed to get consistent rise/tread lengths? I know for shorter slope/hill you would stake at bottom and top then measure the height and length using string/level. Thanks for the help!
Using a zip level helps. To be able to have a 0 point and to measure the elevation. In this case I forgot mine on a job site and just used the brick on the house to measure from. Then divide that number by your step rise. We aim for around 7” give or take depending on that elevation measurement. 6.5” if the treads are deep of the steps (16”+) 7.5” if the treads are not deep (14”-).
In this example my elevation was 94.25” from my zero point where the walkway would start. So 13 steps at 7.25” is what we opted for each step so each step was uniform.
@@iamahardscaper Using the ziplevel makes sense and I actually got one last year that Ill be using more. That bottom step or too looks like a landing, seems wider than the rest? Is that part of the 13 steps? Thanks for the help!
@@TheGreatestShowOnTurf There is a small landing at the bottom of the final step that was just added on because of extra material. It is not calculated part of the steps. Essentially it is the 0 point. All of the steps and landings are the same 4' width. May just be the perspective of the camera to make it look wider.

What was the total cost for this job, also if you’d share the profits made be awesome. Although I know it’s personal I’m trying to get an idea of what kind of money is involved considering the labor it takes. I know those long days and hard and heavy work are tuff!!!

Mini creta is a concrete product. The natural stone caps are basalt
