No one knows how many black holes there are in the universe. Black holes do not emit any light of their own making them impossible to see directly with telescopes. The only way we can detect black holes is by looking at the effects they have on things we can see.
So, what's the closest one to us? This video shows a viable candidate, closer than all known so far.

Missing You Tony, hope that You are doing well
I love your videos. I liked the weekly series you did a few years back. I am going through those one by one.
Well considering we live in a solar system abundant with heavy metals, which can only be formed from huge supernova or merging neutron stars, it's a safe bet there's a black hole within a 100 LY of us.
I don't know why I didn't get a notification for this video, been a subscriber for many years.
This is my absolute favourite type of space video. :)
I actually did not know A* had a photo (or several) taken of it. Nice. Thank you for the video.
Legend of the astronomy community. These videos are god tier, still return to your older videos, nothing like them
Thank you Tony. Love your narrated videos. It has been a long time
Love your content! I find myself coming back to watch old videos I've already watched many times. Please keep them coming!
These are the the best videos from Tony.
Great work Tony!! Hope you had no damage from hurricane! Larry
Hey Larry! No damage, we are pretty prepped for storms these days. Off-grid solar and wind mitigation work since Irma did the trick.
@@deepastronomy It is good to hear from you!! Linda & I have moved closer to our. Grand kids in Rancho Santa Margareta. Say Hi to the gang and stay well!! Larry
Great show Tony many thanks
Woah woah woah, when did you start back? I have seen you in my feed forever! You're the OG!

Hey Jimmy-D, yeah got thru Ian OK, just a lot of rain. Jupiter is always awesome, not just at opposition, but yeah was really great. Hope your Summer is a mild one, not so many wildfires, etc.
Streaming is tough. Lot of work goes into them and I can't justify the time right now. May just stick to these vids for a while.
@@deepastronomy good to hear all is good after ian ..hey life gets in the way sometimes if you find time for content its always appreciated
cheers mate
james D
I went out last night to look up, alas too many clouds.
Fine video man keep it up!
Always learning more with these type of great videos,, Tony's flagship
Great to see you, Tony
Love the video!
4:20 Re V616 Monoceratus. You refer to it as an 11 solar mass black hole orbiting a 1/2 solar mass K type star.
I think it is rather the K type star that orbits the 11 solar mass black hole.
True but technically orbits are mutual
Incredible!
I've always been startled by the coincidence of both EHT Black Hole images are shown from their perfect and extreme polar views- with no tilted accretion disk whatsoever.
I mean, what are the chances of that?
Upvoted for not using the word "terrifying" in the title!!
So good!
Well, now I have to go find V Puppis and look at it.
Thanks Tony 🖖
I miss your channel!!
I love learning and you are a great teacher and narrator! P.S. Ann says "Hey"!
Thankyou
My 10th year watching Deep Astronomy
How an 11-solar-mass object (in this case - the black hole) can orbit a 0.5-solar-mass object (the K-type star)? Isn't it the other way round?
"Celestial Ninja's" 😅
Yay.
Its pissing me off his channel is underratted,.
