Thank you so much for all of your thorough videos! I have a quick question though, I see where you're coming from and the example that you use makes sense but it's far as children learning a language they are immersed and surrounded by that language From the time they're born until they start going to school to learn about the rules of the language. By then there already speaking the language comment however not that great but speaking it nonetheless before they go to school to learn the rules and why things are the way they are. So I'm just curious as to ooh why that works for children but not for adults. Is it because we're too distracted by everything else and don't have the motivation to force ourselves to reach Eat and understand? Or is it something else? Just really curious.

Adults absolutely can learn that way, but it is the slower and harder way. As adults, we can use the many learning tools we've gained over our life to learn German in a different format than children are forced to use. Once you understand the 'why' behind German grammar you'll be able to make huge strides towards becoming fluent. If you haven't already, you should check out my free course Unlocking German Grammar to get a taste of how we can learn German more efficiently. Here's the link!

Hi Laura, thank you for all your videos and articles on German, you're really helping learners like me. I wanted to know what your thoughts were on other learning methods like using Duolingo or using flashcards through an app like Anki. Thanks!

I would just say that learning vocabulary is going to be a lot harder if you don't understand the grammar. Just learning vocabulary means you need to learn many different forms of the same word, whereas knowing the grammar first means that you've learned the patterns and can apply them to the main form of the word to get all the different options.

I think you have a big misconception on what the immersion community is trying to bring to the language learning community.

That could be --I'm speaking from my experience only (as we all do). What do you think I'm misunderstanding?

You have some serious misconceptions about immersion, starting from the very beginning. You say immersion is like throwing a child in to swim in the 10 foot pool. It’s not. You pick easy content you can follow and look up tons of words and it gets easier over time. The alternative approach you’re proposing is the opposite where the child doesn’t jump in the pool at on until after months of listening to lectures about how to do the breaststroke. Low and behold when the child actually jumps in the pool they still can’t swim at all.
The only way to get better at swimming is to swim. The only way to get better at listening to a language is to listen. Sure you can aid your exposure with theory, and this may help to a degree, but that’s all. It’s not a standalone.
I’ve learned 2 foreign languages through intensive and extensive immersion, one being English, and I can guarantee you that early immersion works and is extremely effective.
The success stories come from those who jump in the pool.

I'm absolutely a proponent of learning in the best way that suits you. I'm thrilled that immersion has worked so well for you! I have seen a very different story with most of my students which is why I teach things a bit differently. :-) But, by all means, continue to use immersion if that is the best method for you to learn.
