Diwali isn't a kind of new year celebration for us. One can say we celebrate the triumph of good over evil on this day. We light up diyas or lights, making our surroundings bright, as light destroys darkness, symbolizing the defeat of evil. We burst firecrackers to ward off negative or evil energy that surrounds us. In short, Diwali is just a celebration of light over darkness. Actually, it is associated with the story of Lord Rama who is idolized as an incarnation of the God Vishnu. Lord Rama is worshipped for his valor and character. The story, in short, is that Rama exiled himself with his wife and his brother to honor his father's wish. He spent 14 years in a remote forest, where his wife, Sita, was kidnapped by a powerful king named Ravan, possessing evil powers and ruling over a remote land, Lanka, which is nowadays Sri Lanka. In pursuit of his wife, Rama overcame great distress, met Lord Hanuman and others who were part of the monkey empire living in the forest. Rama crossed a sea, fought against an army of monsters, and finally defeated Ravan. The day when Lord Rama returned to his kingdom with his wife and brother after defeating Ravan is celebrated as Diwali.
