Back in the day I would pick up a game and if the box weighed a lot I knew it had a huge manual and tons of content so Id buy it. Was a pretty solid method to get in depth games.

I remember getting gifted the first Elder Scrolls Redguard and the manual was a book that had literally had the coffee and lighter treatment to age it. Your relationship with the game started before you even installed it back then.

@@emc3065 Nothing like eagerly reading the manual in the car ride home. My favorite story was when someone got me Steel Battalion for the original xbox for my birthday, and being eager I unboxed it and started it up right away, only for the "tutorial" to start out where your base gets attacked, and the pilots for the mechs in your base were caught off site, so your character says "don't worry, I've read the manual, I can do this!" and it jumps straight into the first mission. With 0 actual tutorial. So I had to frantically get the manual and find out how to even turn the dang thing on, and I managed to get it powered up just in time for an enemy to go in front of the hangar I was parked in and I panic hosed him down with weapons fire. Good times, but that game was hard as hell.

For some reason, Splat failed to award the box of medals to his pilots after each fight, and didn't bother to buff his low-stat pilots by rotating them into and out of the simulation chamber and the hospital slots. Also, one consideration for positioning and moving the city is that there are special loot squares (ruined cities, enclaves of survivors, etc.) that you need to capture in order to advance. There are ways to ease the steep learning curve by "fixing" the mechs given to you at the start of the game -- turn off the self-destruct, drop the missile launchers (for early game), load up on ammo modules, and arm with one minigun per mech, ignore weight and max out penetration and fire-rate. Rotate the pilots to keep their stats buffed, and avoid any fights with anything bigger than the smallest bugs. Also, avoid any boss fights in the early game, and focus on component construction and repairs to your city.

He also misinformed people about the engine layout. Don't mix both external, and internal cooling together. It will cancel each other out. Pick one type. Put 4 in it and put 2 Multiplier at the last two slots.

@@Njordin2010I would also like to know this since I think this will make or break the game for me. If enemies scale as time passes and knowing how complex the customization is then I might have my doubts since I would like to slowly learn the game mechanics

@@FreedomFighterEx I just picked this game up and I've been experimenting with different reactor configurations which lead me to notice that you can manipulate the ratio of cooling ability to temperature resistance by changing how many multipliers you put in. While that fact in and of itself is pretty self explanatory, I was wondering if there's a particular reason you said to use two? I've been having trouble deciding if I'd rather have the resistance or the cooling for the first few missions.

Some trick from playing this game for a bit,
1:During fight, on the bottom right there is a button with four arrows in all directions, if you press it, you will be able to move the camera freely like most rts.
2: you can actually give your mech priority target, its in the console withe the ”battle” button, in the slot where your mech go, if you click on the arrow, you can change which target will, well, prioritize, they won’t always do it, but it helps.
You can only do it before selecting your mech though.
It has the ”little” swarmi thing, would recommend having one mech targeting the nest.
3: You can equip a energy shield in the armor interface and it will protect you from enemy energy weapons, including the laser that the snake/base thing shoot when you inter the moving circle. IT WON’T SAVE THOUGH! That laser can cut through a montagne like it’s butter. Cold butter, but still butter. If all your mech have shields and stuck together, they MIGHT survive.
(After a recent, I find out that energy shields are more powerful the more energy is available and the strength of the shields is represented by a blue bar on the right of the same panel with the send button when making a mech,
Shield might actually save you from the snake death laser if build properly)
4:You don’t have to control all of your mech at once (but they should stick together most of the time) in case you didn’t know.
5: I don’t think the circle around the snake/base actually do anything other than slow projectile and stop missile, but I might have missed it has my sense of observation is simultaneously the best and the worst.
6: If tank gun are the only weapons that use with ammunition, it will basically never run out, but it’s a bit shit, otherwise.
7: Unless your in a nest mission, if you complet the mission, you will get all the loot (I only know this thank to the comment on this video).
8: I think the laser snake/base can actually kill your mech if it’s fall on them.
9: Fun fact: If you look up in the beastiary, the small swarmi thing,
    THEY’ARENT SMALL.
10: if I remember correctly, if you upgrade/repair the artillery gun, it will make artillery ammo, giving you one more strike per day (so fast)
11: Want your mech to have more weight limit, more energy or better weapons, but lack the necessary items? Click on the the button with the lighting on it. No, I won’t expend on that, you can figure it yourself, but the thing you can do are both electrysing and hot😉

Been having a blast with this game the past week. Saw it for the first time months ago when you first reviewed it.
3 things, just in the off chance you get to read this comment Splatter
    A) The game autocollects the green crates at the end of the mission. You can check the total at the bottom left before you press the red button to move on past the end screen.
    B) In the same end screen, above the mech portraits and to the left of the big red button, you will find the medals. Assign them to your favourite pilots.
C)In the reactor window, check the bottom right value, Resistance. You can only have External or Internal bonus, not both, they cancel each other out. The optimal build is 4 (ext or int aux) and 2 Resistance multiplier last

You guided them 1 at a time and you started off with just the 1 but as it went on and you completed missions you would get money to buy more components and weapon types for your mechs. It was more isometric and in color but it was a surprisingly gory game with surprising levels of destruction. Brigador is one of the games that comes closest to that sorta gameplay experience in the modern times but this does remind me of it as well.

Never fond when a game prevents you from getting your battle drops because the mission is spontaneously over. It might be believable if there was an emergency extraction, like jumping through a closing warp gate, but not when you've won a battle and no other threats exist to make your exit an immediate concern, just hand the things to the player. This logic also applies to in-battle-only heal skills.

I don't remember Syndicate as a very chonky game. You had to fiddle with research and what different cybernetics did, and of course there was no in-game manual. But you could intuitively grasp what an uzi or a cybernetic leg did. One obscure mechanic was the three drug levels. You would need to light your guys up with combat drugs when they met resistance as fast as possible. It did not have the giant Microprose tinkering and engineering though.

Where would I start if i wanted to learn how to make my own games like this? Any info would be great, thanks all! Cheers!

      1. Decide in your scope, usually by creating a Game Design Document.
      2. Pick an engine that fits your needs. I suggest Godot for a 2d game like this. It's ooen source and will never take a portion of profits. It's also easy to learn. Another alternative might be GameMaker Studio. Or make your own engine if that's your speed.
      3. Learn your engine. There are thousands of tutorials and pages of documentation for every engine/language. Start by making a small learning project, and develop your proof of concept.
      4. Just keep plugging away. Even 5 or 10 minutes a day can make a difference. Take your time. Making a game is difficult, and requires a lot of patience and problem solving skills.
As an aside, I do think that AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot (or a number of others) can help when you're completely stuck on a problem, but be careful of relying too heavily on them. You are more likely to learn if you try to solve a problem yourself.
Have fun developing! Hope this helps!

There is no real definitive answer here, but here's how I would suggest going at it as someone who has been slowly making his own game:
      1. Define your scope by creating a Game Design Document. There are a lot of templates and resources that you can search for that will give you an idea of what you want/need to define. Treat this as your starting point. You can expand at any time,so start small. Decide on a few mechanics you want that you think will be fun, and build up from there.
      2. Pick a game engine. Choose something that will meet your needs. For a 3D game, you might look into Unreal or Unity, though they take a percentage of your profits, and both companies have some questionable practices.
For a 2D game I highly recommend Godot. It's free, open source, and is easy to learn. It is also being actively developed, so new features and pipelines are being added alongside of bug fixes.
      3. Take the time to learn your chosen engine. Start by making a square move with your chosen input, then slowly work out from there. It won't take long, even when learning from zero, to make something that starts to feel like the makings of a game. Don't worry about art assets yet. You can always replace simple assets later.
      4. Keep at it. Making a game is hard. It requires a lot of patience, and problem solving. But even 5 minutes a day can help make progress. Don't compare yourself to other developers or their progress. Compare yourself to yourself. Look at your own progress. You had an empty project three months ago. Where are you at now?
It's worth noting that there are many AI tools out there that might help you along as well. However I caution against relying on them. They can be opinionated, and can lead you to bad practices. Instead use them as a tool to help you learn where you are making mistakes, and compare the responses to your own search findings, and decide on a method that works best for you and your game's needs.
Also, I recommend checking out the website develop.games, there is a lot of useful information to get you motivated.
Hit me up if you have questions. :)

figuring out the strategies of the game has been my biggest hurdle. I'll hit on a setup that carries me two or three missions then I'll get pwned on the fourth without really understanding why. I'll have to put Stationeers aside for a few hours and come back to this title to see if I can do any better.
