A tip to build callouses: don't even pick up a pick. Fret these strings every day for a comfortable length of time, even more as your fingers get used to it, thereby getting some toughen finger tips. I have a little something I use between picking up my guitar and mandolin, but it's not necessary for a beginner to get familiar with holding the instrument. After a period of time, talking small breaks doing other things, maybe, you should notice it gets easier to fret those notes. Use your pinky as well, because you will use it more often than is presented here. Watch other better guitar players to see what I mean. Then get your pick and hit a few notes from the first frets in as many places up the neck to get the feel with your left hand. You will notice that the notes get higher in pitch the further toward the sound hole you go. Use that pinky too. Try to reach to the next fret, skipping the adjacent fret. That pinky finger will come in handy in the future as you get better with guitar, or mandolin. Cheers, and good luck. Bob

Hi. I always wanted to learn guitar but I had a broken ring finger that set with a bad bend. Chords and notes were such a struggle so I gave up. Im now 54 and disabled so decided to try again. I have found your basic lessons and exercises have helped my fret hand immensely. I’m now looking forward to learning guitar and for the first time being positive about it. Thank you.

Hi Lauren, after owning 4 guitars 2 acoustic 2 electric, I have now got number 5 another acoustic! Yes never learned to play them, ended up selling or giving away to friends! But I'm determined to learn this time! I found your channel, and find your teaching method easy to follow! I'm doing this for myself, not to be in a band or play in the street for loose change! Like you have said, put some time aside, and don't practice for too long! So the journey starts now.....
Thank you Lauren! Although I can play the full C, G, and D chords, I really am grateful for the simplified versions you taught! I love your relaxed teaching style. You're a blessing.
Hi lauren- just wanted to thank you! You have a huge gift and I feel so blessed, truly. I’ve been playing on and off since 2020, but since discovering your channel this year, I’ve been playing consistently and learn at least one song a week All thanks to you!
For some magical reason, with your explanation on the “syncopated rhythm” comparison, that’s where I was able to differentiate why I’ve been stuck on an unrelated problem at the office. Teaching me more than I came for!! You are so talented!
I was losing my mind with instructors and online "easy guitar" subscriptions. Hoping to learn to play with my son. This saved me. Thank you....would pay for this... all... day... long.

@@garykelbaugh115we're all fortunate to have access to her lessons. I found her back in January basically by your exact same scenario surfing 🌊 around UA-cam.....
Aww Gary thank you so much. That's why I did this lesson. I've been meaning to do it for a while. I actually don't have a music degree myself. I just love music so I teach a little different than a lot of university trained teachers. Glad you found it helpful :)
I learned more during this video that I have learned in all the years I've been trying. I'm 64 and it's never too late with the right instruction. Maybe I will be able to play through my retirement instead of wishing I had learned. Thanks for sharing and for giving me permission to BREATHE!
Lauren, I'm 70. My very patient parents got me lessons, all the way through book 6 Alfred's Guitar Method. That was sixty years ago. I wanted to play for all the wrong reasons, girls being the biggest wrong reason. Hindsight is 20-20 they say, probably because that is so true. It's all about the music you can make, whether anyone's listening or not. My own analogy is, 'if I knew I was never to catch another fish I would still go fishing'. Your approach of starting chord teaching with just two of the three basic notes in a triad, along with motivating students to keep at it, will work out later as the player fills in the rest of the triad with additional notes for creating melodies within the chord progression. This is wonderfully helpful for working in fingerstyle and flat picking. I have not watched the rest of your lessons but I'm betting you will be getting to basic theory, nashville number, etc. That hindsight I referred to now comes back to me when I realize I wasn't paying enough attention and my first teacher could have better explained it to me. Or maybe just snapped his fingers in front of me when when he thought I may have drifted and said, 'hey, pay attention, you need to get this'?
Thank you Lauren for your detailed videos. I absolutely love your step by step videos. I am 50 years old trying to learn the guitar. I feel like a lot of things in life involve timing. I lost my wife to covid in September of 22', I considered guitar lessons in 23' but was not mentally there. Today, however, I came home with my first guitar ( acoustic ). Sat down searching UA-cam and landed here. I watched this video and really liked it. No hype, and your mannerisms are just what I was looking for. Thank you for your video's and the timing couldn't be better.
Love your guitar teaching style...the best I've seen on UA-cam...wish I'd had this to watch in 1975 when I bought my 1st guitar (I now have 6 acoustics)....you have a very good beginners "easy to follow" teaching method🙂🎸🎶....only one thing...I've played "Horse With No Name" since the 70's....there's actually 4 chords in the song, but they are all within the confines of the 2nd fret...Em D6/9...Em9...Dmaj9.......I've been playing forever...and I find myself learning things in your videos🙂
Billy, yes there are more chords but then students would have to worry about learning 4 chords instead of two and complexity breeds frustration for beginners. Thanks for your comments and kind words 😃
Yeah, I understood you were making it more simple...a favorite song of mine..."Tulsa Time" by Don Williams is a 2-chord song....C-F......your "taking it slowly" type teaching is a big plus ➕ for beginners to learn....
Thee best tutor I have ever heard or seen. So true and generous with your knowledge and thoughts of the instrument. You make so much sense with your teaching. You hit the nail on the head. You will make any beginner a pro soon. I want to watch your channel only for learning. God bless you girlie may you prosper and grow. Stay safe stay blessed always😊😊🙏
By far the best teacher! I started learning to play 7 weeks ago at 68 years of age. I am learning for the most part from a very well constructed manual which is great. However I find your videos extremely helpful and a pleasure to help learn from. Did I notice that when you strum it is on a slight angle? I think my strumming might be too vertical! Thanks for the patient and considerate way you do the videos.😊
This is a *fantabulous* lesson, Lauren! You're such a good instructor. Seriously. 👍BTW, I incorporated your tips on applying less pressure on the strings. I definitely noticed a *WAY less painful* practice session. Thank you for this brick-by-brick playlist! 🎶😄

Bob
Great tips Robert. Thanks for sharing!
hi Lauren , being a 57 year old who always wanted to play & never did or got around to it after seeing these videos & your over 50s older video, i am now looking for my first guitar & your course is top of my list so back as soon as i find one, or soon as boris lifts lock down & shops are open again :) regards from the UK
That is awesome! Like I said, you are never too old to learn. So once the shops open again, grab that guitar 😉
I have been playing guitar for 25 years and this is the best beginners lesson I have ever seen. Keep up the good work you are a great teacher.
Wow thanks, will do!
Dear Lauren, l like your mehod of teaching the guitar chords and secondly you have so much patience to explain so softly. Above all you have incredible understanding for many elderly people,
I like to thank you for that too. Usually I learn one metod or two method to continue my guitar lesson on your channel.
You're very welcome!
You're welcome. I don't speak French but I believe I understood much of what you said.
Thank you.
Jordan, glad to help. There is always a way to simplify chords and make things easier.
TY Lauren! ....just took my first lesson with you here. Im an old trumpet player for many years.....I dont have the lungs for that anymore...but still have that fire in me so Im learning the guitar. I love it. Thanks again....I have also subscribed.
You're so welcome!
Rock on. The electric will be easier to play at first. Congrats on the new guitar.
Wow, a great lesson from a grt teacher. U rly knw what n how to teach to a beginner. Thank you 👍
You're very welcome! Glad it helped!
I’m 73 and have wanted to learn guitar for many years. I’ve tried a bunch of different lessons but enjoy yours the most. Thank you.
Great to hear!
Thank you Lauren! Although I can play the full C, G, and D chords, I really am grateful for the simplified versions you taught! I love your relaxed teaching style. You're a blessing.
Thank you!
Hi lauren- just wanted to thank you! You have a huge gift and I feel so blessed, truly. I’ve been playing on and off since 2020, but since discovering your channel this year, I’ve been playing consistently and learn at least one song a week
All thanks to you!
Wow, thank you!
For some magical reason, with your explanation on the “syncopated rhythm” comparison, that’s where I was able to differentiate why I’ve been stuck on an unrelated problem at the office. Teaching me more than I came for!! You are so talented!
Glad you enjoyed the lesson and found it helpful!
Very very helpful..from a 63yr old beginner from Australia 🇦🇺!! Thnx.
i'm 70 and ive watched a lot of instructional videos but your are the best by far. great job Lauren
Wow, thank you!
I was losing my mind with instructors and online "easy guitar" subscriptions. Hoping to learn to play with my son. This saved me. Thank you....would pay for this... all... day... long.
What a great goal! Let's do it Steven.
Love!
Aww thank you
I have been going to different You Tube channels to learn how to play, but, I have learned more with this 23min video than I have on all the other sites. Thank you 😎😎
Lauren is a great teacher Gary...
Yes she is. I feel lucky that I found her channel.
Zayne, as always thanks for your support. No orange capo in this video but maybe it will pop up again :)
I learned more during this video that I have learned in all the years I've been trying. I'm 64 and it's never too late with the right instruction. Maybe I will be able to play through my retirement instead of wishing I had learned. Thanks for sharing and for giving me permission to BREATHE!
That's great! Good luck on your guitar journey.
fantastic tutorial. More power to you:)
Thank you!
Hindsight is always 20/20 for sure
Thank you Lauren for your detailed videos. I absolutely love your step by step videos. I am 50 years old trying to learn the guitar. Your videos make it so easy to learn tthe chords and plucking, etc., You make it so easy and fun to practice and learn how to play. Plus the slow pace truly helps greatly. You are awesome!
!!
Awww Tammy, so happy to help. I do have a full course, so it you're really looking to get into the guitar and learning step by step, I highly recommend giving it a try. www.laurenbatemanguitar.com/course
Thank you so much, I use to play when I was a teenager but I’m almost 70 now and wanting to play again. You make it so simplified that I’m sure I can do it.
You're very welcome and yes you can Richard!

You've gathered all the basics in one video and it looks like you are a professional teacher. This is amazing and I recommend your courses for others because I'm sure you have a very friendly and organized way of teaching
Wow, thank you!
I'm a beginner with the guitar and everything about this lesson makes sense to me. It's doable and makes a great foundation to build on. You're a great teacher and I'm looking forward to future lessons.
Happy to help!
Great lesson … I’m a middle-aged beginner and loving this. Very clear and helpful , thank you!

Ok, I’m taking my guitar out of the closet and going to try this thing one more time. Think this approach might just work for me, thanks for the inspiration!
Edward you have no idea how happy that makes me! Let's give it another go.

I love the way you teach, you're right doing the chords this way is less stressful. Thank you.
Can you do highway to the sun by Ray LaMontagne ? I heard that song and fell in love with it. It reminds me of my husband who passed last year. Thanks Lauren it really is a beautiful song.
Thank you, Cynthia for the recommendation. I get lots of song requests so I cannot guarantee that I will get to it, but I will definitely add it to my list.
@@LaurenBateman I bet thank you for getting back to me. Have a good one.
Awesome young lady, very easy to learn from her!
So happy to have found your site! Learning slow but actually learning!
Hey Marcie, so glad that you found me. That's amazing!
Thanks so much for teaching so clearly. ❤🙏👍🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Day three of picking up my guitar. It felt cool when I could feel our guitars resonating. I don’t know where you live, but I am living in Dillon, Montana. I live by myself. Virtual, but still a sense of connection, which we need dearly as humans. Thank you, Lauren!
Stephen welcome. I'm from Boston. Make sure to check out my course. Http://www.laurenbatemanguitar.com/courseyt
just started guitar , and I especially like your teaching method, because of it's directness, and simplicity. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Thank you so much! So much easier to understand. I'm newly retired and ready to learn to play the guitar, something I always wanted to do but didn't have the time, working and being a single mother of four. I hope I'm not too old to learn. Lol
You got this! Super Mom! 😃
You are a really good teacher and thx for making it really simple for a dummy like me. I tried to pick it up when I was younger but gave up. You have really motivated me. Many thx from a 60 year old 😉
Morgen, glad to have motivated you to pick up the guitar again. You are not a dummy, only learning something new. Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
You got it
Thanks
Thank you so much Mags 💗
You’re absolutely a great teacher, I bought my guitar on first May 2021 at a beginner but I have been scrolling up and down looking for a Patient teacher finally I came across you Gracias 😊 I Hope in future I gotta play guitar like you ✅ 🖐

Thank you SO MUCH! This was very helpful!! I’m a firm believer that baby steps is definitely the best way to learn… slowly learn more and more. Again thank you thank you! :)
I agree! Learn on your own pace and enjoy the journey.
60's beginner here. Of the many youtube instructional videos I tried ... this is where I needed to start. Lauren is an excellent instructor and I intend to utilize her expertise going forward. Thanks Lauren!
Happy to help!
A new subscriber from 🇯🇵. Just bought my guitar last week and now browsing YT channels, learning to play the guitar by myself. Found your channel by chance and found it easy to follow, especially for beginners, like me. Arigatou gozaimasu!
Awesome! Thank you!
Lauren I love you!, Let me explain..I love how you teach , you're patient, sincere, and allow me to feel productive at learning to play, and I am learning! Thank you!

So happy to help
Just decided to learn to play an instrument at 69 - looked at various youtube tutorial's but have found yours to be the easiest approach in attempting to learn the guitar - many thanks for your time and effort online.
Welcome to the channel!!!
Glad to help!
Thank you for my very accessible first guitar lesson ever! Also, you have a beautiful singing voice!
Hey Taylor, glad you enjoyed the video and found it helpful.
Juan aww thank you. So happy to help!
Hi Brian, great observation. The pick angle does change slightly while strumming. Helps with a smoother sound. So happy to be helping you. 😊
This is a *fantabulous* lesson, Lauren! You're such a good instructor. Seriously. 👍BTW, I incorporated your tips on applying less pressure on the strings. I definitely noticed a *WAY less painful* practice session. Thank you for this brick-by-brick playlist! 🎶😄
Hey Joyce, thank you so much. That makes me so happy that my lessons helped you.
Thanks so much Ms Lauren. Your channel is helping me so much. Love the picking & fretting exercise the chords to start learning how to play and the strumming patterns. YOU ROCK!!
Thank you so much. That makes me so happy that my lessons helped you.
Thank you so much for this video. I have learned so much watching it. Love your tips and the way you explain what to do. God bless you. I have subscribed already.
