I get asked frequently how people can support me, and the answer is to just keep watching! (Unless you happen to own Netflix or something, then gimme a call.) timeninja888 I think it's also a good way to show Grimaldus going from a soldier that sees black and white to a leader that sees the full picture. Shows his evolution from a space marine to reclusiarch.
The trend continues with Part 11A. Personally I think it's a metaphor. Not just because his haze and dark mood changes, but one of the themes in Warhammer 30K/40K is that, for a Space Marine, life/existence/purpose is made clearer in battle. So as everything progresses forward toward battle, the movie becomes more clear. It's showing us that Grimaldus' view of purpose becomes ever clearer as he goes from more of an administrator (something most Astartes seem to despise) towards fulfilling his duty as a warrior. Most Astartes see themselves as weapons forged for war, so to them it makes much more sense to be on a battlefield waging war than doing administrative work (checking logs, going through personnel files, listening to reports about ration supplies, etc...). That's part of why he was angry in the beginning. He wanted to be on the front lines of the orbital war front. His purpose would have been clear, his duty coming first.
Will never cease to amaze me a fan can do this but GW, with all their money, cannot. What's that quote from Iron Man, "Tony Stark built it in a cave! With a bunch of scraps!"
Its because it wouldn't make enough money, couldn't find a good director, had money tied up in other places. Lots of reasons. This guy built this movie over many years for free.
I mean it’s a spacemarine. That’s like a literal angel descending from the heavens and telling you „I really like the way you killed that guy a few years back, son!“

Yarrik, a man so badass, he bolted a piece of xeno tech to his arm AND NO ONE QUESTIONED IT not only that, but Ork tech needs the power of the WAAAAGH to function properly, which normally requires a whole lot of Orks to be in the area to gather the psychic energy, but his power klaw arm works regardless. So presumably, Gork, or perhaps Mork, looked down on the man as he gutted that Ork warboss and said to themselves "I loik is style" and permanently diverted the power of the WAAAAGH to keep it running. AND NO ONE QUESTIONS THIS EITHER

“They want our banner... they always do!” One of the best lines ever written. If you know anything about black Templar lore, you know their squads fight together and don’t replenish members. That implies these have been fighting together for decades or centuries, and Arterion has been there, holding the standard and drawing the enemy in so they may be slain by his squad mates for a long time. He suffers so that his brothers may slay the Emperor’s foes. He suffers for humanity. Never forget the standard-bearer
The Templars have such an interesting chapter structure compared to the set squad formations of codex compliant forces. You're right, each Black Templars force is made up of brothers who choose to fight alongside one another, not simply because they were assigned to the team to fill out the numbers. It just means that every moment humanity, humour and small Astartes quirks are that much more interesting in groups like this, but the rage, dedication and loyalty the black templars exhibit when fighting is highlighted in equal measure because they fight and die alongside the brothers who know them better than anyone else.
@@jakobchong1383 in a way, but in a nobler sense. He holds the banner to show the deeds of the squad proudly to the enemy and to show them who they face, and since banners are such valuable targets for destroying an enemies morale, most forces would try and rip the banner apart, taking that much focus away from the five other members of the squad who are counting on some mindless cultist or raging Ork losing running straight into close combat range.
That also means hes a skilled enough warrior to fight ONE HANDED that entire time. One handed, against the worst the galaxy has to offer. Think about that for a minute.
Yup. Being volentold at its finest. I'm sure everyone who was in the military knows that sinking feeling when you get voluntold to do something ypud really rather not
Well to be fair, having to deal with nine days of the insane amount of logistics that people in the Warhammer universe put up with would scare the heretical shit out of anyone. Hell, if I had a choice between doing that and going too the front lines with nothing but a trench shovel, I'd rather take the shovel route. At least then if they ever find the remains of my body, I can at least get a decent burial.
“And I had to endure this for nine days. Nine days.” Even an Astartes Chaplain of the Black Templars of all chapters can be a victim of tedium. That will always be my favorite part of the novel and the bit that makes me chuckle the loudest.

@@testertester6814 You are totally right, from my analysis the curcial mistake (most ) million dollar movies are making is that they analyse their "smart data" on target audience and what they think that audience wants to see to maximize profit etc. therefore totally lose focus on the most important thing in the process - the movie itself. Fans only let speak their bruning passion for a project and that passion is what we all miss so dearly in profit oriented works.

Incredible work. Shows a dark and gritty world that's believable because of small glimpses of the mundane. Small touches like a soldier just wanting a treat like caffeine or an officer seeing the transhuman walking armor that is a spacemarine and only wanting to get recommendations for promotion makes for great world building.
I saw Ultramarins, i think thats the name of it, about 10 years ago and thought it was good. It was my first taste of WH40K in video form then i stumbled upon Astartes about 6 months ago and this was one of 3 that was named dropped in a comment on ua-cam.com/video/D-co8eIfWXM/v-deo.html. I am only 2:30 into this vid and DAMN this is very well done.
dunno why but it was grimaldus's first meeting with Zarha Mancion that did it for me. The simple but meaningful declaration of intent she gives to grimaldus…….INVIGILATA WILL WALK!!!
I feel you! I came across this as a coincidence and I am in tears, I cannot believe it, how the fuck is possible someone created a masterpiece like this! Shame on GW
I loved this book and could not imagine a better visual representation of Grimaldus, Invigliata, and the sheer magnitude of the invasion. You sir are insanely talented my friend.
I got a question. How well does this follow the book? By that, I mean literal like word for word. The reason I ask, I recently discovered this series at the same time I heard about the animated series coming out and how they're taking notes from Helsreach. They should be giving the Helsreach creator a team and budget. Which further research I found an excerpt in reference to the Shadow Wolves mention and saw that it was near identical to the quote in Helsreach (as much as jumping mediums can allow). Just curious to see how much GW has to take with "artistic liberties" with at least the dialogue and flow of the story.
I am from Ukraine, and I looked at this work of art and I am amazed to the depths of my soul. Huge respect to you for such awesome work. It's just a masterpiece, the level of the graphic novel which I oche touched. Perhaps this is the best video that watched over the past 5 years, despite the fact that I'm not a fan of Warhammer. Respect for the author of such a work. Now I will wait for the continuation ...
"I have always believed that there is something beautiful in the very first few moments of a battle. Here are the moments of highest emotion. The fear of mortal men, the frustrated bloodlust and screaming over confidence of Mankinds enemies. In the moment when a battle is joined, the purity of the human species is first revealed to the foe.... FIRE!" FOR THE EMPEROR!!!
Man, 40k fans have been screaming for this kind of thing for years and finally we get a taste. Truly an amazing job and I can't wait to see what's in store with the rest of this series. Bravo Sir, Bravo.
Way I look at it, the beginning of this was a dream, or memory. Hazy at best, the lines and colors of reality blurred. As the series progresses the memories are fresher, thus of higher quality, until finally it is in the present day, clear as crystal.
As someone whose read the book this is using as source material I can safely say that difference in visuals is just style choice by Richard and not not anything deeper. Speaking of original book if you like this vid and haven't read the source material I'd highly recommend it, Richard does a solid job working with the audio book version but this vid is not a complete page by page adaption of the story so you could still benefit a lot from reading the original book. I can only speculate why he switched styles little over half way through this vid but if i had to guess maybe adding the extra filters for the cool hand drawn effect was taking to long, or maybe he just wanted a bit more color. Both styles are good.
I love 18:13-18:31. When the music kicks in as Bastilan answers how they few are going to protect this gigantic city. "With blade and bolter. With faith and fire."
When the titan comes into shot at 32:15, I'm literally crying. The scale, the visuals, the camera angles, the sound design and the score are all so beautiful... I don't have the words. That shot is one of the most evocative pieces of cinematography I have EVER seen.
yeah at first i was like oh hey a IoM building, classic cathedralism, then it pans out; no wonder they call em god machines, they're walking cathedrals, and cathedrals are churches
Delightful. So good to know someone actually understands 40k, so much better even than Games Workshop. So good we have accessible technologies that day that let people like you, Richard Boylan, put enormous amounts of effort to get enormous results like this. Great idea with letting out single episodes and combining them into a volume from time to time. I'm definitely looking forward for more.
This is a masterpiece, like a work of art. In the beginning I thought the style of animation would bother me in the longrun but it adds so much to the experience and the way it becomes colourful and clearer with time makes it even better. This is simply amazing work.
I just realised that when Guilliman gives the Black Templars Primaris marines he also gives Hellbrecht the same mission Helbrecht gave Grimaldus: he orders Helbrecht the mission to defend a number of Shrine worlds. So all I want in this new fluff is Grimaldus being extremely snarky towards Hellbrecht during the Shrineworld Crusade
I am a 40k fan. I'm also a veteran. Please continue your work. It is profound and inspires me even though it is fiction. In fiction is an echo of truth. Fiction is often inspiring in it's truth. I know I'm bieng cryptic. But please. Keep it up.
Blyn Mage To quote a tech priest presented with a STC: "Well fuck me with a power dildo... This looks amazing as fuck!" Glad i said "Among" in my first comment. Though Hellsreach is still in the top 3! One hitch about the Lord Inquisitor, the lipsync, though that is a minor as fuck hitch.
Stuff like that makes you wonder, just how awesome a full fledged cinematic 40k universe would be. With hollywood running out of ideas, i feel like this needs to happen.

I don't know why GW can't do something anywhere close to this masterpiece. This is by far the best animated WH40k piece I have ever seen. You should be making millions...
this true, I'm only about 30 min in and I'm gawking. Took a break to come down to the comments to see if anybody else is praising the fuck out of this film.
A simple fanfic, this is not. Your work on this is very evident with each stroke of your pencil, brush, or key. I've never seen it's equal, and I've seen an awful lot of fan fiction. This is professional grade work. Outstanding content man. You've got a new subscriber.
But... This isn't fanfiction. This is an unoficial adaptation, of an actual Black Libary book. Most of the Dialogue has been ripped straight from the audiobook version of hellsreach.
When Grimaldus said, “Don’t leave me here,” it made me feel for him. Despite all the augmentations, training, and indoctrination, underneath all that armor and supposed fearlessness he didn’t want to die there. He didn’t want to have himself and his brothers to pass on and be forgotten in the undulating tides of the horrors that where about to consume the world. Pretty sad stuff, man.
The Titan walking into battle at the end is fantastic... Very suggestive movie indeed !!! You did a movie that in Hollywood would have problems and issues in the making... Even with dozens and dozens of million dollars and a cast of renown actors !!!
The whole bit around the 58 minute mark just destroys me emotionally every time I watch this. The literal trans human soldier trained and prepped to resist the worst horrors in the galaxy goes out of his way in a single attempt to comfort a dying and clearly desperate soldier in their last moments because despite all that conditioning there is still some trace amount of humanity in them, no matter how confused they might be by the situation the human aspect is still buried there Just, Jesus Christ, I am not afraid to admit it hits some serious feels.
Every time I watch this scene I wish he had taken off his helmet to show her his face. Likewise at the end of the movie, Grimaldus should have removed his helmet and smiled at Andre. It would have been more awesome given how they "don't" do that.
Second to my previous statement Grimaldus's speech is epic and stirring. I feel my heart quicken at it, and I am a member of Her Majesty's Royal Navy. I have once before had a speech from a chaplain have such fire and brimstone, this was at the start of the 2nd war in Iraq. I was young and easily lead, as are we all at that age, but our chaplain gave a sermon from the upper level of or hangar. The reaction was not so dissimilar from the speech mentioned above... Richard you have nailed it!!!!
I remember a certain Canadian Major in a certain place quoting Kipling against the backdrop of a rainy sundown, as I moved my platoon out into the black of a deadfall forest...over 35 years ago. Stuff sticks with you. Forever.
57:43 the change in music for this version makes this moment so much more emotional and beautifully human. So sad, and yet enduring and powerful, especially to glimpse the true humanity within the Astartes, making them so much more relatable to us. I will never forget this moment.
If there is anything that convinces the larger media that 40K can be taken seriously and not just a silly plastic board game for nerds. THIS IS IT! Incredible!!!
For me the part that sticks in my mind from this excellent work is the death of the female guardsman. I feel as though Primus may actually have been reminded of his human beginnings by this. No I haven't read the book yet, so much has changed since I last read a black library book.
Man, there's so much to love in this! One of my favorite artistic nods is at 23:31, when the servo skull floats over the massive imperial aquila in the background, briefly giving the impression of the Space Marine imperialis. While everything about this series is amazing, it's those sorts of loving details that really uplift it into something magical!

Whatever birthed it is a mystery to me, and yet the thought clings like a virus, blooming behind my eyes and taking deep root within my mind. I will draw my last breath, and when my brothers return to the stars, my ashes will be scattered over the priceless earth of this accursed world: Armageddon. Even the name twists my blood until burning oil beats through my veins. I feel anger now, hot and heavy, flowing through my heart, and filtering into my limbs like boiling poison. This is legitimately the most amazing thing I have ever seen on UA-cam, ever. I watched the Falcon Heavy launch on Friday and it's not even in the same league (for me - a W40K obsessive - personally. I'm making a personal statement of truth, not a general one - before the trolls jump in). The fact that it's been done by one person, alone, just...I'm lost for words at your raw talent. I could go on about how everything was absolutely perfect, whether it was the art style at the beginning (which I think was absolutely brilliant and just as good as that at the end, only in a different way), the subtle movements of the characters that conveyed the kind of personality, character and emotion that other 40K visual depictions NEVER manage; the uncanny, meticulous attention to detail in the characters, armour, vehicles, buildings, rooms and landscape; the balanced, carefully picked music and sound effects that made it feel every bit as professional as Hollywood blockbusters, except without the hundred million dollar budget. You even managed to overcome the cardinal sin of pretty much every depiction of Orks I've witnessed, where they take the dark comedic relief aspect to them and keep running with it till they're reduced to big, stupid, green, angry clowns, rather than the feral, crude but cunning, savage beasts you authentically depicted them as. Honestly, I don't think I've even finished comprehending all the things in this that have just blown me away and I could probably spend hours attempting to do so, so I'll summarise it with this: You've taken a world that I spent hours, days, weeks, months and years, reading and imagining when I was younger and made it that bit more tangible and real in a way none of the other games/machinima have ever come close to. Thank you.
the evolving look honestly was one of my favorite aspects of this. the story started out simple and as it grew in complexity so too did the art and detail.

Wait..so his bait?
@@jakobchong1383 in a way, but in a nobler sense. He holds the banner to show the deeds of the squad proudly to the enemy and to show them who they face, and since banners are such valuable targets for destroying an enemies morale, most forces would try and rip the banner apart, taking that much focus away from the five other members of the squad who are counting on some mindless cultist or raging Ork losing running straight into close combat range.
@@jakobchong1383 No. He is the glorious beacon that the enemies of the Emperor flock to, like a moth to the flame, ignorant to their demise.
That also means hes a skilled enough warrior to fight ONE HANDED that entire time. One handed, against the worst the galaxy has to offer. Think about that for a minute.

Well to be fair, having to deal with nine days of the insane amount of logistics that people in the Warhammer universe put up with would scare the heretical shit out of anyone.

This will be one of THE greatest pieces of warhammer art and stories for decades to come
Way I look at it, the beginning of this was a dream, or memory. Hazy at best, the lines and colors of reality blurred. As the series progresses the memories are fresher, thus of higher quality, until finally it is in the present day, clear as crystal.
only with war comes clarity
I loved the sketch effect, but i am not jealous of anyone who would have to draw millions of Orks, frame by frame.
It wasnt drawn, its a filter over the video.
Or the animators got better as the series went on.
GW hire this man! We want 40K animated movies
i mean if he tweak the art style a little AND give him a small team he would accomplish miracles.

I was blown away, during the moment the Astartes knelt before the dying soldier, and she looked up at him, almost like she was thinking how fortunate she was to look apun one of the emperors angels, before she died.
Yes, that scene was amazing. It made me, however, feel for the Astartes; forced to see his kind die in a million ways, a million times! It makes it more understandable why some give in to rage and madness, just to block it all out. Simply amazing, in a scene where no word is spoken!
there were moments in this that were truly revealing and amazing. the 40k universe needs more projects like this that put the scale of characters in better perspective. The shifting animation styles, were seriously awesome! thanks for putting in the time to create this, i hope to see more stuff from you like this
Superior tale of the second war of Armageddon. The black and white gives it the black templar feel
The God Emperor Of Mankind The greatest honor of being praised by the Master of Mankind!!

@@ryan.1990 Uhh what are you talking about there were only two! Haha, a good joke most definately! *Inquisitorial Sweats*
Can you imagine Devastation of Baal in an animation like this?
49:15 the speech had me going.
I‘ve never posted anything here on UA-cam but this „Fan-film“ forces me to.
This is just gloriouse.
It really catches the mood and the epicness of the 40k universe.
After the end of the project „ the lord inquisitor“ I laid my hope to rest in regard of an awesome representation of the 40k universe and than I stumbled over this jewel.
I can not thank the team enough who work on this Film.
I love the art of the animation in the first parts. This is really something unique.
I can not wait for the next chapters.
Keep up this impressiv job.
„ The emperor protects“
Read the books my man. They are just as awesome, if not more so.
This is why The Emperor gave us days off, popcorn and beer.

Some things are universal. :)
HERESY! :P
Lemme get this straight...you didn't field your most potent weapon because it had not been blessed?
Yes...
lol
@Abserd O It's more like modern day gremlins and IT surpersitions but amplified 100s of times. The Mechanicus doesn't have a clue about the actual science behind their creations. Those prayers might simply work because they happen to contain some passcode forgotten millenias ago. Spraying scared ungents might be working because that particuliar piece needs to be cooled or cleaned. They don't know that, but they trialed and errored their way into making artifacts of the past work, and sometimes the superstitions stick.
@@PureMetalDragon ooh ooh I have a but ackchually moment :D:D:D
My understanding is that all their tech, being derivative, is still infected with all the warfare malware from the war against the men of iron. Many thousands of years old, fragmented, and insane.
Kinda makes me want to spray some oil on my truck today
@@shotguncleric Like many things in 40k, that is also true. The galaxy is a pretty big place.

HELSREACH: The Movie Vol 1. Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Drokk yeah!
Honestly, I don't think I've even finished comprehending all the things in this that have just blown me away and I could probably spend hours attempting to do so, so I'll summarise it with this:
You've taken a world that I spent hours, days, weeks, months and years, reading and imagining when I was younger and made it that bit more tangible and real in a way none of the other games/machinima have ever come close to. Thank you.
this.
the evolving look honestly was one of my favorite aspects of this. the story started out simple and as it grew in complexity so too did the art and detail.
Bro I’ve literally watched 2:26 and oh my holy emperor that was one of the coolest opening speeches to anything EVER
By the Emperor it's beautiful
Tahkos Nice pic.
well now it's Grimaldus with a puppy on his head
Tahkos lol I was just surprised seeing someone with the same pic as me.
This is a masterpiece. Holy cow this amount of time and love that must have went into making this. I cant believe im finding this just now.
58:00 an simple moment... he is not a normal Space marines...
I'm finished all movie but for the many scenes that with they fight the special scenes of this type for example it's very rare..but this is not a problem..
This work is a great work!
Honor to the Astartes!
It was poignant and touching tbh. Part of what makes this film awesome.
