- An interview with actor Christopher Lee who was in Ireland for the filming of ‘The Face of Fu Manchu’. The actor talks to Des Keogh about his career.
Lee explains how over 13 years he has played many parts but recently has become known for playing villains. He puts this down to playing the Marquis Evremonde in the film ‘A Tale of Two Cities’.
Lee goes on to explain that when he plays villains or monsters, he likes to show the audience the loneliness of evil. Talking about audiences for horror films Lee says they like to be thrilled and that film offers an outlet for a range of feelings and being frightened is one of those emotions.
The interview was broadcast as part of the ‘Newsbeat’ programme on 24 February 1965.
‘Newsbeat’ was a half-hour feature programme presented by Frank Hall and ran for 7 years from September 1964 to June 1971. ‘Newsbeat’ went out from Monday to Friday on RTÉ television and reported on current affairs and issues of local interest from around Ireland. The final programme was broadcast on the 11 June 1971.
Fun fact: In 1939 in Paris, Christopher Lee witnessed the last ever public execution in France when serial killer Eugene Weidman was beheaded by guillotine on the street. This man had a very interesting life.
"Fun" fact?
Hardly the last. We merely wait for the next
sorry mate we seen the video of the kid being gunned down in his car .. that was this year
Another fun fact: He released several metal albums that he recorded when he was 90. Guy was a badass.
@@williamleewolverine You're kidding? Lmfao. I will be looking that up!
Such an articulate voice.
Great voice, theatre actor.
And no one can replicate such a powerful and distinct voice. Not even his stand-in Corey Burton, who as amazing as he is with playing Lee’s roles, can match Lee’s defining presence of a voice.
@MADROCKS221
The sound of one's voice does not make you articulate; it's your knowledge of the language.
@@redblade8160 who said anything about sound.
@@MADROCKS221
You must have a very short memory. It was you that said he sounded articulate.
Brilliant actor.
What an amazing man.
He was a personal friend of Tolkien and a lord of the rings fan. He was cast perfectly for Saruman. RIP
@I am me • 25y ago Count Dracula
Oh my god, what is this blatant lie? He randomly met Tolkien once when he was drunk at a bar and asked him permission to play Gandalf - and Tolkien, also pretty drunk, gave him his blessing. They were in no way friends.
And he was Ian flemings cousin
The influence for James Bond
Christopher Lee is one of my very favorite actors. He was excellent in his craft and was such an elegant and handsome man. Yesterday, two of his movies were on the TCM channel - The Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula Has Risen from the Grave. I have enjoyed Mr. Lee's movies since I was about 4 years old. This man was a movie legend and played every character with class and charisma and with a certain amount of sympathy. God bless you, Mr. Lee, and RIP. ❤🌸 🙏
Christopher Lee is the most interesting actor of all time. What a fascinating life.
Christopher Lee is one of those people on my list whom I want to meet in the next life, alongside his dear friend Peter Cushing, and shake their hands, thanking them for making some of the greatest scary movies together, and for simply being such charming gentlemen in Hollywood and to the world as a whole.
He was just great wasn't he!
Ian Fleming,s cousin ,British secret service, special operation executive (S.O.E )
It's probably what you were hinting at, but he's supposedly the inspiration for James Bond
@@eoghancasserly3626 curiously Sir Thomas Bond ,help develop the original bond Street in London , actually called new bond and old bond Street, Sir Thomas Bond family motto ,is The world is not enough ☺️☺️☺️☺️ while Ian Fleming was born in a private clinic in Green street ,near park lane
@@johnhehir508he got the james bond name from a real guy..some guy who studied nature or birds..
fucking nailed it.
It's been said that if the villain is non human, the audience let's the villain get away with more.
He was a slay king.
As Chris Reeve is Superman, Chris Lee is Dracula. End of
Same suit in almost all interviews
Sympathy for the devil type roles!
The thing I notice the most when he speaks is his crisp English accent and the total absence of “Err….erm….you know….the errrr…..”.
Intelligent, interesting and engaging which is everything that our current politicians are not.
Yes, he’s not in any ways exhausting to listen to. You know, like.
He's an actor and was trained in theatre that is why!
True renaissance man and eloquent speaker. It's a must to check out Christopher Lee's biography. What he has done in his life will blow your mind.
Where can I get his biography from?
@@dilaverali05 I'm reading it now. It's called Tall, Dark, and Gruesome. He is an amazing writer on top of his life simply being a series of amazing coincidences, lineages, and self-made magic.
Least we forget, he was also on the "Band on the Run" album cover! Endlessly fascinating life indeed...
Man, I really wish that if Christopher Lee was still alive today, I would’ve love to just invite him to dinner and just chat about stories for hours. He’s the kind of person I would be invested in and never get tired. RIP Christopher Lee
I've been watching his interviews a lot recently, and let me say: that suit got some milage.

Is that Des Keogh ?
I think so ?!?
They shot part of the film at an old church outside my dads house in Drumcondra, my dad was 8. My gran made them lunch.
Always loved a job he could get his teeth into.

Straight from a master, play the villain straight without tongue in cheek. Something Hollywood should get back to
