  • Two first-run early 1970s pancake-drive powered units pull two unpowered cars. They had no pulling power but once heavily weighted, they hauled quite well!

Those Bachmann pancake motors have more to them than might be guessed, especially the early versions.
Later ones would probably benefit from upgrading the magnets.

Nice!!! Metroliners, the saviors of the passenger train! Despite their early teething problems they really did a good job on the NEC! Nice job getting those lightweight models running and pulling reliably!

Super cool!! Love the catenary wires!!

Thank you James! I grew up near the wires and that is still the railroading that fascinated me the most. Tracks without catenary look bare to me.

I have a running 4 car set in N. Boy is it loud. Also have a bunch of shells for parts and cab-car conversions. Both PRR and Amtrak. I don't have cantenary so I pull a dummy F40 around behind it calling it a museum piece if the mood hits me to run it. When I bought it I planned to use for cab-cars but it ran and was in such good shape I saved it. No point destroying something in great running shape almost 50 years old. I run a mostly commuter layout inspired by the New Haven now Metro North so I run mostly FL9s, some P32s created from P42s, P42s and some RDCs.

What locality is your layout set in?

Having run both early & later F7s from Bachman, I can tell you the brass-geared early models are noisy. Guess that's why they later went with full-nylon gears.

@@pancudowny Yeah, have an old U23 in Bicentennial paint, so it's that old at least that makes a racket. Also have brand new GP40 that's a good runner with good slow speed. Newest Bachmann are even using body mounted couplers on the locos. Best pullers I have are older Life-Like with lead weights. So heavy they pull 30 cars with no issues. Better than my new Kato SD70s on pulling ability.

They are really a pain in the rear but a fun challenge to get running.
